One thing that's just occurred to me. Why is all this in the overclocking thread?

The 8800GS is on pre-order in the UK for £135, the same price as the HD3870.

The HD3850 in that benchmark is the 256MB version.

Marsey, look man the 3850 IS 256 MB. In fact we still COULD compare the 3850 512MB versions with the 256MB 8800GT because the 3850 512MB IS STILL CHEAPER.

i dont recall them saying it was the 256 version as i think those charts are from legitreviews arent they?

good point sam. the g92 overclocks better than the rv670 then :P

mine will game at 835 core 1050 mem and 2020 shaders

*goes to check* ^^^

edit
stands errected, i mean corrected. still i dont think 256mb is enough as it still cripples the card when you turn on the filters and everybody wants some aa at least.

im still happy with the choice i made as it was £230 wellspent in my eyes, if you think what the 3850 256mb does is worth the money then thats is your right just as much.

so how much of an oc can you get out of the 3850 then?? :P

ps

Well I don't recall them saying it's 512MB either, and as the 256MB is more common it's safe to assume that it's 256MB.

As for clocks well:

Stock GPU: 668MHz
Stock Mem: 825 Mhz

OC GPU: 730
OC Mem: 920

I haven't really tried to push it yet. I just set these clocks up the first day I got it. My temps are about 40ish.

first thing i do is push it till it breaks then back it down a bit.

how much of an improvement does that give you in any benchmarks you have run?

http://www.ngohq.com/news/13260-amd-movi...phics-card.html

Industry sources are telling us that AMD will be releasing its dual-processor R680 graphics card one week early. The NDA on all the technical specs was due to lift on January 28th, but our source tells us this has been moved up to the 23rd. We?ve yet to get a confirmation from anyone at AMD. The upcoming R680 contains two graphics processors on a single board and will eventually allow four processor CrossFire mode on select motherboards.

let the games begin :o)

just flashed my 3870 to the newer bios which allows higher clocks, so Ill have a fiddle with it a bit later, not realy in any need to oc it , Its just cos I can lol.

SLi doesnt scale as well xfire. and trisli scales horibly aswell. xfire is newer tech. the 3870x2 is priced at $449 so should be about £270-£280 in the usual first week price hikes. GTXs are priced the same.

^On the most recent video (cant find it, but it is somewhere on youtube), some guy got to go into AMD's "black room" and got to ask the ATi guy a few questions, and according to him it will be around $300 US.

I will try to find the video.

i am deffo sure it will be $449 because that $300 price is the UK equivalent of the 3870.

AMD has informed their partners that Radeon HD 3870 X2 (R680) launch has been pushed forward to 23rd January instead of 28th. Therefore, it will now be launched together with Radeon HD 3650 (RV635), HD 3450 (RV620) and 780G (RS780). The price point for Radeon is US$449 and stocks will hit the retail market by next week.

sammorris,

Theone: Just goes to show that the species of 'cretin' is still alive and well... They don't push much air, that's correct. They don't need to. Most of the people who bought the Antec 900 put the fans on high, when their temperatures would barely be any worse on low. zomgxmoreairflow!!1!!
NZXT fans push 1100rpm and around 40-45CFM. I run my case fans at 700rpm to move about 30CFM. Do I have any temperature issues? As if!
Additionally, why did they buy the NZXT HUSH case if they didn't want quiet? Surely a noise-dampening case designed for quiet computing with turbo-speed fans defies the whole point? morons...

First off, the bit about updating the fans was clearly a joke, and was said in fun! If that makes me a "cretin", then I'm sorry! I just thought that it was funny when ck5134 mentioned that his MB temp dropped 12C when he increased the fan speed of his video card to 100%, and he mentioned "make note to self"! Your own words mentioned that "they don't move a lot of air, but they don't have to"! That's why I made the joke in the first place, as you said the same thing a couple of weeks ago! If there was a mistake in understanding what ROFLTIH means, it means Rolling on the Floor Laughing till it hurts! If it was taken to mean something different, then I'm sorry, as I wasn't trying to offend anyone!

If the price of complete silence is an additional 12C of MB temperature, just to make no noise, count me out! When your video card fan is removing that much heat, it's time for better performing case fans! there is a huge difference between quiet and silent! if that attitude, on my part makes me a "moron" then I guess a lot of us here qualify!

My computer is a good deal quieter today than when I first built it. In fact it's gotten a couple of DBa quieter in the last couple of days since I decided to let the motherboard control the fans. It runs cooler and quieter than I can get if I control the fans manually!

Respectfully,
Russ

What company is this computer from?

If it is pre-built from Compaq, HP, Dell, etc, they don't allow you to overclock.

The 200 dollar one? lol forget about overclocking that! They use the cheapest parts they can. Those parts will fail if you try to overclock them not to mention that overclocked is locked in the BIOS. It's from walmart so it shouldn't be hard to return it. Go ahead and do that, then buy this computer. After rebates it comes out to 200 and is miles better.

When the HD3850 came out, there was only the 256MB version. If they don't say which size it is, it's because there only was one size back then, 256MB. If they don't specifically say otherwise, any HD3850 test will be of the 256MB version, and that's an end of it.
Marsey: £230? Ouch. For a card that's barely faster than one for half that price, you got jacked.

Theone: I already apologised for the general bad nature of that post if you look, hard day, alright>
As far as 12C of chipset temperature, where did you get that from? I've never even told you what temp my chipset runs at, as none of the programs I've got seem able to tell me!

Prutsos: Sorry mate, but I think overclocking that is out of the question.

Lol if i turn the fan speed up on the 3870 using rivatuner, from the default 25% on the at 50% speed its noisey but cools the case lol dropped my mobo temps by 5ºc lol, if i turn it up to 100 its like a hurricane way too noisey but then again a drop of 12ºc... note to self ' must upgrade pitiful fans on nzxt hush case lol'

It wasn't you Sam, it was ck5134's computer that did that! I just thought it was funny and passed the joke along! You have to admit that the GPU fan dropping the MB temp 12C doesn't show the case fans in the best light! LOL!!

Everest 4.20 should give you all the information as it was designed with the new Intel chipsets in mind. I know it works on mine and a few others around here. I have the Corporate Edition, which is non graphical, without all the little icons in the taskbar, and I can live without that anyway! You can download a home version with the taskbar icons, but it only shows the MB and 1 core and doesn't show the GPU, HD or all the voltages. I like this a lot. This was Friday after I hooked up the side fan to the MB and let the bios control it's speed. It's weird as the Manual says that only the CPU fan is controlled by the MB, but then again I have Rev. 2.0 and the Manual is for Rev. 1.0. Whatever, it seems to do a better job of cooling.
