I have a concern about the DVD-RW discs. Will they have a shelf life that is as long as the -r? I assumed they did not. I have just started doing a little editing using the vr mode but I have been rerecording the finished product from the -rw onto a -r disc. Sometimes the video quality is slightly affected but rw can be reused and can also be expensive (as compared to -r). My biggest concern is how long they will last.

About doing the tapes too hdd comp and burn dvd.

Actually it takes a while even if you have a fast machine and large hdd because it goes frame by frame. but after hundreds of hours working on that first show thats one hour your hdd crashes and everything is lost luckily you had a back up but it was corupted and you have too compleatly start from scratch.

I would have a problem with finalizing the disk. or a read error . I was using Maxell 4x -R. and these would work at first and then stop. Some of the recordings will only work on the emerson.

I purchased a Emerson EWR20V4 when they first came out. It worked great for switching all my old home movies from tape to DVD-R. I found Maxell worked great. Except that it was increasingly harder to find the 4x. I never heard about any upgrade being available (I even called the support number and was never told that). So finally, I purchased the Emerson EWR20V5 when they came out recently, so I could use the 8x discs. But now I am have a very strange problem, I was hoping someone else could help me (Again I called the support number 1-800-605-8453 and they could not help me. My timer recording keeps losing its memory. I set it and press the T-set and the timer indicator shows, but then right after 12 (AM or PM) it starts flashing and all of the recording memory is gone. Any help? I never had this problem with the EWR20V4 (which was plugged into the same outlet) I have tried replacing the unit at Walmart but the new one does the same thing. I have tried a dedicated outlet but it still does it. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hmmm?

That's strange with the timer.

Only thing I can think of is that the disc that you are recording to may either be bad, can not be used in this machine or is already recorded on.

Hmmm? Its strange that they will not give you a disc for your EWR20v4. Probably because they want people to spend money on the new model.

What discs are you using? Maybe try changing to another disc maker.

I just did the upgrade. No problems so far. And put in an imitation brand 8x disc and did a test record. I'll probably have to set my timers a minute or 2 behind schedule like everyone else.

The delay is a few seconds only... maybe 3-5 seconds at the most.

The EWR20V4 currently on the shelf at my local Wal-Mart clearly state they can use DVD-R 8x, so sounds like the ones currently shipping have the upgrade already.

I have the emerson EWRIOD4 and i did obtain the update firmware NRS*****R1.0 for the 8x update from the company, before i updated it i had bought Maxell 8x DVD-R and putting them in the player it would not load one at all, ok then i got my upgrade in the mail called them as it said to do and went through the process, now when i put in a blank 8x DVD-R it loads fine but when i started to record, it stopped and started recording by it self and when i hit stop it took forever to stop then said error cannot record or words to that affect on the disk so that disk is no longer good, anyone else with this problem??

Tanooki,

Supposedly, if you can get a copy of the original firmware you can load it back to the original settings.

Why?

What's happening with your upgrade if you don't mind me asking?

Daman1..

I hope its not taken that way.

I just wanted to know what was happening with the upgrade.

I ask that question to everyone who has had an issue with upgrading.

There is no "heat" intended.

drifter67,

I would suggest unplugging your unit (from power) for about twenty minutes and then trying it again.

i unpluged it for 20 mins, and recorded some music video for 5 min,
it seemed to do ok, but i wont be sure untill i record something in a movie lenght time,

funny thing with this DVD recorder i had a VCR hooked up making copies of old family home videos which worked fine,
but i was curious to see how it would do if i tryed an old video tape movie i got like 12 years ago, wanted to see if the copy guard worked on it, sure enough it worked it would not allow me to make a copy onto a DVD ,but funny thing is i tryed it on a friends DVD combo VHS recorder which was a zenith and it did infact record it, i thought that was weird lol i didnt record the whole thing was more or less just to test it,

I have had the same weirdness on other players. I can record from dvd to tape or dvd to dvd and dvd to tape with my set up. I am often surprised at what I can record (VHS) with no problems at all. Then I put one in that gives me the copyright protection block. I do have a "video stabilizer" for tapes that remedies that though.

I did have a similiar problem as yours and unplugging it worked (like so many electronics will.. it is like a reboot or reset I suppose). It would record a minute or two then give me a record error message and power off. Sometimes it would work and at times it wouldn't. It continued that way for awhile. Eventually it would not record at all. The unplug worked but only after a lengthy unplug. Just unplugging and then right back in did not.

I have had my unit for over a year now and I am still pleased with it. I am constantly recording on it. It is a workhorse and it seems to be just fine for me.

8x will probably be around for a while.

16x Max will be it for DVD's. They will go no higher.

As 16's came out shortly after the 8x's I would imagine that most people have not upgraded to 16's. Besides that 16x drives are only made for computers. Not DVD recorders. (Not yet at least)

You can still get 4x discs. They are hard to find but they are out there. (Verbatim Digital movie discs)

Has anyone used the Taiyo Yuden discs? I tried them before the upgrade (4x) but the machine could not read them.
