Good stuff, thanks, i hadn't done any price comparisons, thinking i could only find drives cheaply exc VAT. I'll probably get a couple thru ebuyer then, provided i can get to the bottom of the annoying IDLING features of the drives first (as per my posts in the PC Building thread) of course :).
edit- just realised, i won't be buying any thru ebuyer as don't want to pay shipping (thru Misco i get next day delivery and no VAT as i piggyback on work purchases), free delivery is a week's wait if i remember thru ebuyer. I prefer stuff to just turn up at work next day. Thanks for the info anyways.

Yeah see my reply there. Personally I think complaints about the system are overblown. It's not an ideal system as the adjustment of the unload interval should be given to the user really, but given the alternatives I'd still currently use WD drives. I'm intending to get 6, possibly 7 or 8 WD20EARS drives from one of those shops in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah i'd just edited my previous reply.
Whilst i was originally going to mass-buy new drives to replace the existign 500GB drives i realised I only need to buy drives piecemeal as i've been doing a lot (a heck of a lot) of data shuffling since i bought the first two 2TB drives. I've got things such that i can just buy one drive for now as i'll be able to reuse 4 now-spare 500GB drives as a backup for just one new 2TB drive. I prefer to reuse drives instead of selling them, it means more drives to store but it's the way i roll.

Ebuyer's supersaver delivery states a week but is usually about 3 days.
If you post at Hexus forums, you get free shipping at Scan for all orders over £20.
The same goes for bit-tech forums, for free shipping at CCL.
Minimum posts is 20, so not especially difficult :)
I've only ever sold one hard disk, as someone actually came to me asking to buy one, and there weren't enough reasons to keep it (it was one of my WD5000AAKS drives), and the main reason I'm buying all these drives is for physical redundancy, which I don't yet have. I only really need one 2TB drive's worth of extra storage for now. I just have 12TB of drives to redundantise :P Seems mad to retire 1TB drives to backup status, but a lot of them are getting on a fair bit now, at least 3 of them are nearly 3 years old.

I average between 1.25 to 2.00USD$ for Verbatim Bd-R single layer discs. I won't be touching a double layer BD for quite some time. They can keep dreaming about the 11$ each for those discs. I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. Now 3 - 4$, I'd think about. Bd's aren't that expensive. I Archive data for some people. They pay 5$ per disc. It's worth it ;) I've been thinking however about bumping up the price. To be sure I can afford another burner when it comes time.

Did a little math and it seems that 1.25US for BD-R's is .005/GB cheaper than an average HDD lol.

who would use such a scabby brand for BluRay discs though, really?
Verbatim ones are $190 for 50, so $3.50 per 25GB. With hard disks 80x the size and 28x the price, that's unremarkable really.

I don't know a thing about BD costs so I just used oman's lowest number. Per GB BD discs are still less than I expected, although I don't see myself ever buying one.

I most certainly would never use a "Scabby" brand LOL! Verbatim or TY all the way ;) The lowest I've seen for verbatim is currently 1.25USD. A very agreeable rate for something that has been tested for longevity, and shows promise :)

Yeah they're down to £59.96 in the UK ($81.04 before tax) as well. Very tempting, I need some more backup drives :P

I'm keeping an eye on the price of them, some could end up in my server soon, depending on how my need for storage goes over the next few months. I suspect I'm liable to need to put my 4x3.5->3x5.25" conversion bay back in, which is fine, but once the drive count exceeds nine it really starts getting heavy, and as a system that travels to LANs, that's not a good thing!

A pound is a dollar at the moment, sadly, so not good. They should eventually drop down to the £110 mark, but with 2TB drives reliably below £60, they'd still be a bit pricey, right now they're almost prohibitively expensive.

i guess 4TB drives have to start hittinh home first, to drop the price on these.

Pretty much, you will always pay over the odds to get the largest drive type. 750s made 500s cheap, 1TBs made 750s cheap, 1.5TBs made 1TBs cheap, and so on.
