There was no intention of inferring anything about anyone's post, I was just merely repeating what im told me when I asked where he got cpus at ridiculously cheap prices. And I'll be digging around to see if I know anyone who works for intel now ;)

Nope! Never been a Geek! Got into Electronics when Tubes still ruled and made the transition to Transistors, ICs and such, without difficulty. Played Sports most of my life. Baseball, Ice Hockey and Football. Computers sort of came along with Consumer Electronics, so it was a natural thing for me. More a case of being in the right place at the right time than anything else. Building a computer back in the late 80's was an adventure. There were no books, no internet and no place to go, but maybe your supplier, and that was it. The manuals, at least for the Jumper Settings, was usually pretty good You were self taught by your mistakes! Believe me when say that most motherboards had at least 50 jumpers on them, everything today that you easily set in the bios. At the prices in those days, you didn't make many mistakes. Finally General Electric came along and started a service called "Genie", so people started talking to one another on it, sort of a very basic Forum in text. You could finally chat with people all over the country without Long Distance Charges.
I guess the reason you don't see many Computer Geeks in my age bracket is because we were all older then and we were the first of many Computer Buffs to come. Geek or no, it's still Fun! ;<)

No inferences taken your post was polite and completely appropriate. I just have a need sometimes to explain my reasoning, and that's all that was.:)

You definitely need a cooler unless you're willing to put up with the stock one.

As far as I'm aware the Rampage II Extreme from Asus has the overall i7 overclocking record with the 965.
We don't hate Biostars in here, but tend to recommend other brands purely on grounds of familiarity and design.
The Biostar is actually one of the boards I had lined up for i7 if I were to switch to it. Funs have put a stop to that upgrade, but since Gigabyte boards can't do quad graphics, I'm left looking at other manufacturers.

For the record, it was 5510mhz the Asus achieved.

how do you overclock?
i thought that since i got the i7 965, i would just raise the multiplier...

I believe the 965 is multiplier unlocked, the 920 and 940 aren't.

Tbh, any X58 is high end. Up the multi as far as you can go and proceed from there.

now the i7 940 has a "qpi" of QPI: 4.8GT/s
and the i7 965 has a "qpi" of QPI: 6.4GT/s
so lets say you overclock an i7 940 to 3.2ghz, will it perform the same as an i7 965?
or is this "qpi" thing locked?
what does it do?
thanks, im1992

The memory multiplier is unlocked on the i7 920 and 940 so you can raise the qpi to 6.4 with just on option in the bios. The qpi is the interconnect for the cores. The only other differences are the locked core multiplier and a thermal feature that stops the 920 and 940 from exceeding 130watts.

so is the i7 965 worth the extra money? will it overclock higher then the i7 920/940?

If you are getting it for $500 That is a great deal and I would go for it. But if you were paying retail it would not be worth it because the 920 can overclock almost as high.

Anyone using XP-Pro 64 bit, beware of the latest version of Service Pack 2. It totally destroyed my win 64 to the point that it wouldn't boot and there was no way for me to be able to do a system restore. makes sense as if you can't get the OS to come up, it's a little bit hard to restore anything!

im1992,
I didn't, but I don't store anything on the boot drive at all. All my storage is on a different physical HDD! I did all the other upgrades and it was running fine, so when it told me that updates were ready for my computer, I went ahead and did it. It was the last time I saw anything on the screen too, because one it was done and re-booted, that was it. Post screen and then nothing! video was on, but just black! No error message, no nothing! It just never booted XP!
