I'm going to go with what Cheree(At Panasonic) told my wife over phone about the fix might be a couple weeks. After a couple weeks have gone only THEN will I try and reenable the TVGOS feature. Right now I'm taping 24 season 1 on A & E and I don't want to have it screw up since there is only one more 4 hour day left.
By the way on a off note, I do have the service manuals for these machines and others if people are interested. I bought a CD from Panasonic that has these units as well as other Panasonic electronic equipment on it for around $10-15US. You need their(Panasonics) viewer which comes with the cd to view the manuals.

Sure but the file size will probably be 30-50MB. Do you have a cap on your email account? If someone could dedicate some web space, I could simply upload the whole cd to there and do it like that.

If it's 60MB or less you can create an .iso file of the disk and store it for free at http://www.savefile.com
Thanks

Ok kool, I didn't know about that. Well I can include the viewers in one file then the models in another on that site tonight when I get home. I'll just do 85-500 models unless anyone wants another added on.

I think the majority of the people here have the E85, E95, and E500. I think there is also a guy with an SCT-1500 so those should pretty much cover it.

After you strip out those models and the viewer, maybe our email could handle it. That is, could you let me (us) know how many MB we're looking at (I know, it's at home so it'll be later).
Appreciate it.

hi folks, cheryl was nice enough to e-mail me and give me this info and update below. let's work with her, she is really trying.
"I just wanted to let you know that the rumor of a fix was false. We made a change in the Oklahoma City area last night. Because there is no pattern as to when the U99's come up, we probably won't know if what we tried will work until at least the middle of next week.
We have been able to reproduce the error here finally, so now we should be able to track the root of the problem."

Sorry folks I misspoke earlier in regards to service manuals. I got home and loaded up the cd and I don't have a complete manual for 85 and 95. It does have the HT-1000 model listed. Also, since the DMR-E500 is similiar in operation to the others except for a few features, I can still send that. The file is 18.6MB. PM me ok.

This may be a dumb question but is cheryl with Gemstar tracking and able to address all of the different cable systems.
Do they feed TVGOS information to all cable providers?
If this fixes in OK City will this then be done nationwide?
I'm not being critical, I'm just not sure where this all fits in with the different systems that have been affected.

cheryl is one in a million customer service rep who seems to be able to get things done and communicate with customers. amazing!
really can't answer your other questions with any guarantees. but as she keeps me informed i will put it on the forum.
i believe they communicate with all the different cable companies. from what she says, it sounds like if it works in oklahoma it might work elsewhere but i don't know that for sure. it also makes sense that they test first (sort of seems like they didn't when they changed their software sometime over the summer). i believe they are aware of the various machines being affected.

stock code: GMST
Excerpts from a July 26, 2005 article:
Gemstar to overhaul TV Guide
Shares slump as publisher foresees losses
"TV Guide's circulation has dropped from a peak of nearly 20 million subscribers in the early 1970s to around 9 million today,...."
"For 2005, Gemstar expects to post $55 million to $65 million in operating losses from TV Guide magazine, it said. In 2006, operating losses from the publication are expected to be between $35 million and $45 million."
"TV Guide projects that it will have paid circulation of more than 4.5 million - down from its current 9 million -- when it debuts the new format with the issue of Oct. 17, but it is offering advertisers a "circulation bonus" to stimulate business in the early going."

If you check on GMST financials, there doesn't appear to be any "p" for the foreseeable future.

maybe they should just ditch the paper and stick with media (if they can get it to work right). they seem to have sold the concept to a lot of manufacturers.

HOLY COW!!!
I go away for a few days and this old thread *TRIPLES*!
I've spent the last five hours catching up, and have a few insights I've mentioned before and elsewhere that I do not see listed here. I'll cover them in my next post.
shaolin00:
Quote: I'm going to go with what Cheree(At Panasonic) told my wife over phone about the fix might be a couple weeks. This brings up another way we might help each other during the crisis. I, too, am taping 24, Season 1, and I goofed on my Anti-U99 Defense System, and missed 07:00-08:00. My ReplayTV unit had file sharing abilities. The Pannys don't. I wonder if there is a cheap way of covering the shows we miss without incurring the Blockbuster rental charge for the DVD?
Quote: By the way on a off note, I do have the service manuals for these machines and others if people are interested. 1. Where can I order them from?
2. Do they include block diagrams and component-level schematics?

My post earlier today wasn't complete. Now that I've read all 24 pages of this thread here is the more complete info.
DMR-E95HS (purchased in April 2005)
zip: 98110 Bainbridge Island, WA (Seattle area)
Comcast cable
no cable box
I had a U99 around 6:30am this morning; it wasn't there at 3:00am. It occurred while the machine was in standby.
I have had U99s these past several weeks, but the most impacting problem I had been experiencing was the gradual loss of the lineup lines being refreshed -- typical of what's described in this Forum (gaps that never fill, etc.) Now all I have is "No listing" for everything.
I do not ever recall seeing any ads (other than the standard ad for TV Guide) but I don't usually go to the Promotions screen.
I keep my channels trimmed down to a minimum (to speed up the download, when it used to work). I'm guessing my downloads occur over night but how can I tell? (I saw some people mention that they could tell when a download was happening -- what is it that you 'see'? Or is that only something you know when you have a cable box?)
I have the 2 PBS stations at the top of the list. I have noticed, as the "No listing" condition was beginning, that the PSB stations' data would be loaded, while the rest of the stations continued to show 'No listing' for the day. (odd, I thought)
I have not yet done any of the resets detailed in this forum, nor have I done any firmware updates (not sure whether the 95 needs one).
I have about 30% of my HDD used.
I never had any problems with 'divide' which I do on just about every program I record. I gather that this is an old (hopefully fixed in the 95) issue. I also do lots of 'shortens'.
From day one, I was experiencing losses of the second program in a back-to-back recording set-up. I have avoided that by leaving a 1 minute gap between programs. For that reason, while I liked the ease of setting 'Record' from the TV Guide view, this resulted in too many vulnerable back-to-back settings. So I now have all my recording specs. set manually, meaning that I don't miss a recording just because the lineup-lines have failed to refresh. FWIW, when the TV listing data is available, it will fill in the program name for something recording via a manual setting.
I do hope that Cheryl's postal address (along with her last name) is posted to this forum. And perhaps she could let us know the name/address(es) of the significant supervisors in her support life.

O.K. folks, since there have been several posts about, at the expense of repeating myself (I may have posted this before, not sure if I did, so here goes again).
Yesterday afternoon(thur) got a call from Cheryl (side note: I have called her once, she has called me 4 or 5 times total in the last 2 week. Gemstar is proactive on this, no doubt about it!)
The gist of the call went this way, she told me that they thought they had a fix, and would roll it out to OKC last night, if it worked, "you shouldn't see any more u99's"(actual quote) She said it may take a day or so for it to make it to my Panny. No word on if that works, we'll send it out nationwide, but common sense dictates ... I'm sure they will.
My observations since talking to her, got home from work last night, U99, no biggie, CH up/dn reset, got up this morning, good, had a time on the display, looked at the guide, had channel line-up, but different from usual was, no promos with it, ... now on to the semi-bad news, got home this afternoon, and U99 however, ... had listings for today, still no promos, but ... who cares (sort of), gonna wait, (no resets) and see what happens tomorrow morning.
main point here is from the no promos showing up, there appears to be a change in the data, might be wishful thinking on my part, but tommorow should prove something.
Now, she said the reason she picked OKC is that we only have 1 channel for data(PBS) easier for her to monitor, and AKNewbie and I have been pretty easy to reach(not to say that anybody else wouldn't be) I also have the GE TV with Guide+ on it, sitting side by side, so I can give her various readings.
Overall gist of this whole message, no, the sky is not falling yet, and the silver bullet is still in the chamber (not fired yet), but the hammer is back (I think/hope)
Haven't spoken to her since yesterday, no opinion on the other talk about "patch sent nationwide last night" ... Since she actually called me yesterday, she's been good at keeping me posted, I figure she would have told me if there was a change (I hope)

Quote: By the way, WB Bob, hope ya had a good trip.
Thanks, RX7.
Cancun was awesome (as always) and the Club Med, was so-so. Just getting back up to speed, as the mid-September Bugaboo hit halfway through the trip (only on the E95) and I lost a bunch of programming. Fortunately, most of it was on one of my backups.
There are only two times I get U99 Errors:
1). When Gemstar screws with their download (like mid-Sept and last June); and
2). When I fail to follow my "No-Crash" Protocol.
Far more agravating to me is the totally unreliable TVGOS downloads for my area. When they coincide with or overlap a Gemstar screw-up, it is *especially* aggravating.
I'll follow this mesage with the first of a series I'm preparing on crash-proofing your Panny PVRs.

"Why My Panasonic PVRs [Almost] Never Get U99 Errors."
Part 1: My 2 Top Tips.
Over the last year, I have developed an almost foolproof system for preventing those nasty "U99 Errors" on my two Panasonic DMR-E85HS and E95HS recorders. I've discussed most of these safeguards on this and other lists over the last year--as well as on my blog at:
http://panasonicpvr.blogspot.com/
...Which I have neglected far too long. When I get this post and the next couple done and--deal with the feedback--, I plan to include them on my Blog.
First, let me list two *MAJOR* cornerstones of my "System":
1. THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT "FIX" (RECOVERY) STEP, AFTER *ANY* FAILURE:
Unplug the unit for *AT LEAST* 30 seconds before powering it back up. This step alone fixes most problems and prevents recurrences if you have taken other repair steps. It works best after either a Soft, Hard, or Factory Reset(*). If you neglect this important step, you might "fix" your problem--but you may not eliminate all of the symptoms or recurring causes.
(*) A "Hard Reset" has been discussed here often and is simply holding down ChUp/ChDown until the machine says "BYE" *AND* the red timer light is out, if you have timed recordings set. As far as I remember, this *usually* does not destroy *any* data on the PVR. I'd like to hear from those who use it regularly to see if anyone loses scheduling or channel line-ups THAT WERE STILL PRESENT when it was done.
A "Factory Reset" is a three-button combination on the FRONT PANEL (*NOT* the remote), that vary from machine to machine and must all be held down at the same time until the machine turns itself *COMPLETELY* off (usually 5-15 seconds). This *should* set the unit back to factory settings, deleting *all* changes, *including* firmware updates. If it is successful, you get the "New Machine" setup screen and you can not do *anything* else until you enter all of the data.
[Note for cable box users who want to disable TVGOS: Try setting up as a broadcast RF--no cable, no box--but put everything else in right. Then, search for channels from the setup menu--which will disable TVGOS. To re-enable it, you theoretically have to do a "Factory Reset" (although I haven't tried a "Hard Reset"). Thus, you can now go back into the setup and change to your cable provider and set-top box. TVGOS *should* remain disabled.]
A "Soft Reset" is a technique I got from Panny Support last summer. You simply hold down the power off switch *ON THE UNIT* (not the remote) and keep holding it until the "timer recording scheduled" light goes out on the front panel (5-10 seconds).
After *ANY* reset, unplug the unit for *AT LEAST* 30 seconds. Failure to do so may result in recurring symptoms.
2. THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT "PREVENTATIVE" STEP, TO AVOID FAILURE:
*NEVER* leave a disk in the DVD drive!
I know, this has not been discussed as an issue here. However, with the single exceptions of nationwide Gemstar-initiated crashes occurring within a given 24-hour period, *EVERY* U99 Error I have recieved occurred at times I forgot to remove a DVD from the player. After I noticed the preponderances of problems directly related to the DVD Drive (i.e. doing a reset with a disk in or trying to write to a defective disk), I made a point to keep the drive empty when not in actual use. After that, my U99's went away.
I have a DVD-Ram disk that will--every time--take either system completely down and destroy all system information, simply by trying to write to it. That is faulty system design. (It reads fine).
That's also why I think we should list the *drive* firmware revision as well as the system firmware. Might as well list the timer rev as well. One of those may be the September change, rather than the main board rev (which appears to be the same).
I would like to hear back from those who do crash as to whether or noit they have their DVD drives empty.
More will follow later.

About Promos (Ads):
Prior to the Gemstar update in late August that started this whole current rash of failures--spotlighted by the Mid-September update that expanded the crashes--I had *never* had Promotions on any of my PVRs. After the E95 crashed, the first thing I noticed was the ads--and there seemed to be a zero sum game at play: I either had full programming *OR* fully-populated ads. They seemed to be mutually exclusive.
Most of the data I have is anecdotal and fading, as the Ads were not seen at the time as causa, but rather as incidental. As it is, I now belive that this entire generation of crashes and failures is due to an attempt by Gemstar to broaden their advertising base and "Wake up" those older players that were not receiving their ads.
Reading two weeks worth of this thread in a single sitting, brings out the impression that others have experienced similar Ads OR Programming defaults on their machines.
I'm curious: Does anyone have fully populated advertisements (more than one screen) *and* full 8-day programming?
I'm not near my E85, but it escaped the Mid-September crash and I don't remember it *ever* receiving ads.
