cincy you need to narrow down the "possible" issue you're having. Can you borrow Will's DDR2 800 RAM for testing? It'll only take you about 1-2 hours to figure out if it's the RAM's fault, my take at least. You'll know more when the psu is replaced if you decide to do that but testing the RAM is a good idea. I still think that RAM should run at 'stated' speeds. Of course it passed the tests at 800 speed so by default it should be good. :D

Next to test would be the cpu but I don't see Will letting you do that. lol. Lots of work too.....

OK gurus..... IDEAS??

Rob,
Do a search for it in the Windows start menu! Just type in stress.txt!

I still think that RAM should run at 'stated' speeds.

But it does run at 1066 at stock speed! Another thing is that It's been my findings that when the memory fails, more often than not it just locks up the computer. Screen's there but the mouse won't move the pointer and none of the keys work, not even ctrl, Alt, Delete. It won't even re-set! That's what mine does when I try to get past about 885MHz! I know that with the E4300, my memory would run at 920MHz with no problems on both the GA-965P-DS3 and the GA-P35-DS3R. I just can't get it to run completely stable till it gets down to below 885MHz. Then again, the fsb is a good deal higher with the lower multiplier of the E6750!

I don't know about the newer chips but the older C2Ds were a bit fussy about the voltage, and I do know that when I installed a better PSU, I had far less problems. My guess is that there's something wrong with the CPU, unless the temperature of the memory is too high. I would set it at 3.0GHz, set the memory multiplier at 2.5 for 800MHz and see what it does! If it runs ok, he might try running memtest on it and if it passes that, I would leave it alone until the new PSU gets here, before something breaks permanently!

Best Regards,
Russ

yeah, I agree with Russ. I had a brand new inexpensive 500 watt CM PSU (might have been the same one Rob has) that I put in the build I did a while back using some old obsolete leftover components and the PSU failed within a few days (pc would come back on about 10 seconds after it was shut down). I traced the problem down to the PSU. I do not recommend CM PSU's.

God, I hope not. I did a little digging and as near as I can figure, this company used to make PSUs for Cooler Master at one time and Cooler Master dumped them because of poor quality. They trade under the name of Cool Max now and display a prominent CM on the PS. I guess to try and fool people like me! LOL!! I didn't realize that they were no longer from Cooler Master and bought 3 of them. All 3 failed in a very short period of time. One went up in smoke, one just stopped and after the fan died and the other shot sparks everywhere. I will say this, Newegg was very good about it as we worked out a deal for my present Thermaltake W0093-TR2, which works very well, and is a quality PSU. I didn't even have to send the old ones back. Newegg told me to dump them in the trash! LOL!! The lesson I learned is not to take anything for granted and be sure to read the specs as they can and do change. In this case it was for the worse!

Russ

@Russ,
I tend to agree with you on the "lower" end Cooler Masters. I truly hope the upper end Cooler Masters (specifically the 850W model) are better constructed and more stable than what I'm seeing with the model that cincy has. ;)

@cincy,
Robert I would consider NOT doing anything (OC'in or such) with that puter until you get another psu. I think it's the consensus here and I'm sure the Hounds would feel the same way. All of the manufacturers build a shady component now and then. The extreme power series by Cooler Master seem to be theirs. lol. sorry. ;)

d/l link to memtest
if the link doesn't work scroll down almost 1/2 way and click on the zipped ISO. d/l of course then un-zip and burn to cd-r with Nero. Follow directions on the website. :D That should test your RAM plenty good and if it goes thru 2 passes with NO problems you should be fine. :)

@Morty,
The stirrer of the pot.... hehehe. PM'd with the doc last night.... He said you started it... :P On the Cooler Master psu's I hope like I said above the upper end models are good ones. I know that docTY has a few setting on the shelf (NIB) and of course I have the 850W model too. ;) oh btw I got the DS4 mobo mixed up with the X48, yeh I know.. HOW??.. lol. Corrected myself with him and you now... :P

Russ if what you're saying is right(the screen locks up, mouse wont move, but the system doesn't restart), then my memory can't even run at 425mhz! That's crazy! Now do you see how horrible these sticks have become?

When I was at the 9x multiplier and my memory was running at 800mhz(3.6ghz), my PC would restart if the CPU stress failed. Now at 8x multi(so the memory is at 425 and CPU at 3.4), the screen locks up but the PC doesn't restart. So I'm guessing it's the memory.

Yeah Crucial 800mhz memory. Don't worry though, your memory doesn't use the same chips as mine. Crucial recently switched to new chips and it's screwed up the overclocking pretty damn bad.

memtest isn't the final answer but it's a good test and if you can go 3 passes with NO errors you should have stable memory!! NOW the EYE is on the cpu and psu..... lol.

That psu should run something simple but NOT the high end rig you have. I've said that before and imho you need something bigger and better. Use the CM-500 in another machine of lesser needs or give it away. lol.

I finally have enough money to purchase this system, only one problem, the processor is out of stock and the motherboard is deactivated on newegg.

i was considering this processor but i dont know what mobo to get cause the one i am looking at wont let me use the crucial ballistix, what do you think and can you help me?

In these tests Rob the cpu and memory are under more stress than they will endure with any single program that you run. You would have to open up 3 video encoding/transcoding progies to equal what Orthos or Prime95 is doing to your system.

It seems that you have eliminated the memory but you won't know for sure until you replace certain items... psu to start. I know it's expensive but you know the story on what you pay for. ;)

If there was a way to test the cpu that would be nice. The only problem with that is the same with the memory, you won't know anything unless you start replacing things. Sometimes it takes more than you want to deal with. lol.

I would start with a quality psu and go from there. I think just about all of us think that is your problem!! I'll look for some at the EGG, ZZF, and MicroCenter.... :D

Right now, the X38 chipset is still a little immature! bios revisions will eventually cure any niggling problems though. The P35 chipset, which suffered the usual "teething" problems is pretty solid today, and it didn't take that awful long to make it right. If you need two PCIe x16 slots, you've made a good choice, or so I understand from here and other forums. I'm really not up on the technical aspects of the X38, but there's folks here that are. I'm sure they will reply too!

As far as the memory goes, the Crucial Ballistix have changed their memory chips, and so have the corsair Dominators. At this moment I'm needing some good 1066 memory myself, but I'm going to wait and see what shakes out. There must either be a shortage of the good Micron chips, or the manufacturers are just getting cheap. This seems to be the favored 1066 memory at the moment.

A little expensive but not bad with the $35 MIR, which makes them $69.99. I'm considering them myself! I have confirmed that they do use the good micron chips! Looks like it's OCZ for Me! LOL!!

IMMATURE???

not any more m8. they have been around for months on end now (6 months IICR) and are amazing, with quite alot (manly top end DFI and ROG sereis) going to about 550FBS.

yes they are expsensive, but if you want xfire al full 32 lanes and superb ocing then x38 is for you.

unless you want to go to the new mobo kings witht the 790i chipset :)

I wouldn't say the 790 is the best chipset out there.

Russ, if you want to get the 1066 Ballistix don't worry they are still the same chips. Just the 800mhz memory is affected for now.
