Updated version of this guide - http://www.xtreme-source.com/showthread.php?p=1230#post1230

All guides/instructions on computer settings. Are for a computer running windowsXP only?. You may have to adjust, find another way with a different operating system

Questions

1. Do you have the right equipment for playing/burning back-up games?
2. Are the discs you are using good quality?
3. Are you using the recording program correctly?
4. Have you got the settings correct on your computer and programs?

Answers

1. I recommend that you have AT MINIMUM a computer with a 1Ghz processor, 512MB Ram and a 4x dvd writer for making your game backups. In order to play the backups you will need to have either:
a) A modchip
b) Swap magic boot discs, and a case mod(non-standard flip-top, slide-card, magic keys etc)? but I definitely endorse having the flip-top(not the one that comes with the PS2 slimline, but an aftermarket non-standard one)

You cannot use a copied boot disc, it won't work unless you have some other way of booting that disc(which makes it redundant to have really!!)

2. I recommend that you use Taiyo yuden, verbatim or maxell(made in Japan) as most people have success with those discs. You could also use Ritek G04 or G05 dye discs, some people (me included) have great success with these, but until you know whether your dvd writer and PS2 like those type I suggest only buying a small(sample) pack to try them.
DO NOT USE INFERIOR DISCS FROM MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS MEMOREX, PRINCO, IMATION OR ANY DISCS WITH A CMC MAG MEDIA CODE?. THEY WILL SOMETIMES WORK, BUT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS LATER

To check what media you have, you can use this program here:-
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

And check it on this website to see the verdict from reviews:-
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?

3. There's already a guide on how to use DVD Decrypter,Nero and a few other burning programs correctly to back up a game, so I won't re-iterate ... check this guide
http://teammodders.com/viewtopic.php?t=68

You can get DVD Decrypter from one of these places:-

http://teammodders.com/download.php?action=file&file_id=1

http://xtreme-source.com/main.php?c_id=download&action=file&file_id=17

http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvd_decrypter/

4. This section covers some things you MAY require to increase ripping/burning performance.

a) Make sure you have DMA enabled on your IDE devices... to do this open up the CONTROL PANEL.

Then select and open the SYSTEM FOLDER.

Then select the HARDWARE TAB.

Then select the DEVICE MANAGER BUTTON.

Then expand the tree + for the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Right mouse click the PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL, a mouse menu will come up, select PROPERTIES.

This will pop-up.

Then select the ADVANCED TAB.

You can now see if DMA is enabled on that IDE channel, if it is in PIO mode, change it using the drop down menu.. then hit OK.
Do the same with the SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL and then you should be set to go.

b) Installing WNASPI32.DLL. Get it from here:-
http://www.nero.com/en/WNASPI32.DLL.html

Go to the folder where you downloaded the file WNASPI32.DLL to.

Go to EDIT and COPY TO FOLDER.

Expand C:\.

Expand WINDOWS.

Select SYSTEM32 folder, and then press the COPY BUTTON.

If you go into your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder, you should now be able to see this.

Now to enable WNASPI32.DLL to be used with DVD Decrypter. Open up DVD Decrypter and go to TOOLS menu and select SETTINGS.

Select the I/O TAB.

Select the radio button for ASPI ? WNASPI32.DLL and then press OK.

Now it should all be done.

c) Updating firmware. This is relatively easy in most cases, if you don?t know the make, model and firmware of your CD/DVD - ROM/WRITER then you can use this program to check (it automatically starts the download progress):- Firmware version detection tool (52.39KB, 5431 downloads)

Start the program and you should see something like this.

Then go to here:- http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

And use the search downloads function to find the firmware for your drive.

For example. I use my own drive NEC ND3520 and enter it into the search bar.

The results for your drive come up like this:-

And you select the latest firmware for your drive.. in my case it?s 3.06. Click on the latest firmware for your drive and it?ll start a download dialogue box like this:-

Select save and tell it where you want to save it in Internet Explorer, or with FireFox it?ll save it to your default download location. On completion of download.. navigate to your download folder.

Most of the time it will have downloaded a RAR file, so now you need to extract the files from this RAR file. OPEN/RUN the rar file.. it will open a window like this.

Hit the EXTRACT BUTTON. And choose a location to extract the files to like this.

Then navigate to the folder that you just extracted the files to.

Locate the README.TXT file? IMPORTANT!!! READ THE DIRECTIONS IN THAT FILE CAREFULLY AND IN FULL!!!

When you?ve read the file and followed the directions for flashing your firmware, you?re ready to begin. Open/run the flash utility. If you happened to download something other than a flash utility, I?m sorry but I don?t know how to update firmware that way. Either discontinue using the guide or follow the instructions in the README file.

It should look something like this.

As you can see from the picture, my drive does not need flashing as it is already that version. But you should press the FLASH BUTTON, and follow any instruction given to you on screen? when it?s finished flashing the drive it should prompt you to restart the computer to complete the flash? when it restarts it will detect it as a new drive, wait for it to finish installing the new drive and then you?ll probably be prompted to restart the computer again to complete the install? do that and then you?re finished.

I hope this guide was some help to you :D

Thanks, that was quick creaky!! blimey!! LOL.

Will add more to it as and when I have the time... this took me quite a while today as I did all the images etc from scratch...around 5 hours, hope it was worth it and might save some people having problems when burning :)

Thanks

Yeah, it's pretty basic stuff really.. but have seen so many posts lately about "what am I doing wrong", this should direct all those people that are having problems with media, firmware, ripping or burning with DVD Decrypter to where their problem lays and hopefully how it could be fixed... will add more options about firmware etc when time allows.

what does the WNASPI32.DLL file improve?

Basically it sometimes improves ripping/burning problems by using the WNASPI32.DLL as your I/O interface.

paddymail - did you have problems burning ps2 games with your nec nd-3520a prior to using the winaspi32.dll file? I can't seem to get anything working and everything checks up good on your list but this is the last thing i've yet to try.

Nope, never had any problems with my burns due to software or hardware either... I've only had a few bad burns the whole time I've been on this site, and they were due to bad media or user error. I can't even remember the last time I had a coaster.. from games or movies for that matter.
The WNASPI.DLL could help with your burning/ripping process... but mostly if you have errors while burning/ripping. It can't hurt to try it though.
Your problems are down to not having the game play in your ps2 right? what mod are you using?

Ok I tried that wnaspi32.dll thing that you mentioned, but it still made no difference.

NEC-ND3520a burner that works fine in any other way, Swapmagic with fliptop on V12 PS2, Taiyo Yuden media, burning at 4x or lower using Alcohol or DVD Decrypter, still nothing is working! :(

Ok, maybe dumb question.. but have you had ANY games work for you yet?
and is your flitop the one that came on the ps2? or an aftermarket one that you fitted? or do you mean you're using the magic keys etc?

I haven't had any games at all work for me. I tried about 5 different ISO's in several different ways, using DVD Decrypter and Alcohol 120%. Already used about 10 DVDs.
I tested my TY media and they got very poor scores (58 and 70) with some failures and errors.

I installed the WNASPI32.DLL file exactly as you described in your guide and i burnt my first coaster. I used GENUINE Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R burnt at 4x speed to burn Shellshock (non-rebuild game) and when i tried to play it a blank screen appears right after swapping swap magic discs. I then changed back to the normal I/O setting, burnt it and the game played back flawlessly. Whats wrong??

@Tokijin - no, I don't mind, go right ahead buddy... I'm working on a profile page too when I get time and gonna pasted all my links in there.. have added you to my buddies list too :)

@johny23 - without knowing more I couldn't really tell you... if you're having success burning games with the I/O set to SPTI or whatever, then leave it alone as there's no definite need to change it... that's why it says
Quote:
This section covers some things you MAY require to increase ripping/burning performance.
Sorry about the mis-understanding.. I'll change the guide to say that if everything's working fine, leave it the hell alone, LOL... j/k

Hey, what is wrong that you think you need to change something?.. let me know and i'll try and help :)

Well, it should work really.. but no telling what else could be interfering with it... you are running winxp? It could be something really simple stopping that from working.. but until you start having problems with ripping or burning I wouldn't bother to be honest.

great guide mate but i tend to disagree with your pc specs i think 512mb is abit high and if you arent running rubbish in the background

come to think about you could include a section on disableing unwanted program running in the background cos thing like av/firewall/internet is a big problem when burning

just a thought

but anyway ive been using an amd 500 k6 with 128mb on an pci usb 2.0 card ripping and burning ps1+ps2 if i pioneer 109 16x dvd burner (only burning at 4X)

and never get no problems

i think what you have done is the peolpe running abit older systerm will rush out and buy some more ram and thats just not the problem

but the firmware/dma/apsi is a great idea cos thats always a problem

I didn;t say that you have to have those things.. I said I recommend that as a minimum because of xp mostly, but to be honest anything less than 512mb now is pretty low and you must have trouble trying to run programs etc... i take it you're not running windows xp then? cos you'll see in the very first line that this guide is for winxp users.. that's oen of the reasons I suggested 512 as a minimum.
even for pc133 ram it's only around $40 for 512mb and will greatly increase the performance of the pc.. I put 512 in my sisters old comp and it works great now even with winxp pro.

Yeah, I did forget about mentioning disabling AV and internet etc..... although I would recommend it!!

Thanks for the input

I agree with Paddy. I had 128MB's of PC2700 RAM with XP for like a year. That is inhumane. The lag when having more than two programs open was horrible. Generally 256MB is the minimum recommeded with XP. Even that is a little low. 512MB is the bare minimum you can use with XP if you're multitasking. I upgraded to a GB of PC 2700 DDR memory and never looked back. Upgrading your RAM is one of the most cost effective ways of beefing up your PC's performance. I occasionally do things on my friend's or relative's computers, and I can't stand dicking around with only 256MB's of RAM. If you get used to having a GB, there's no going back.

yeah, I meant no offense about the amount of memory people should have... but if you're trying to help people out and tell them how to do things, it's a bit annoying if they have problems due to not enough memory and are saying "yuor damn guide doesn't work" or something.. and then you go through the whole process of asking them how they did this and how they did that, to fins out it all could have been solved by having more RAM in their system... LOL.

I'm finally gonna bite the bullet and decide once and for all whether to get a celeron 3Ghz cpu or go the whole hog and get a dual core P4 cpu.. either way I will have a S775 mobo with dual channel mem, pci-e maybe.. and may spring for another 1Gb of RAM too... So then I'll leave 1GB in this machine as my backup... and have the new one with 2GB of PC3200 ram running in dual channels 4*512MB...
