shaffaaf,
Quote: the thing is though, that the xenons are not so good at gamign as number crunching. the Q9450 will be much better at gaming than the xenons. there is a reason they are server based, and the Q and E8/6/2/4 are gaming based.
You best find a better source for information than Custom PC because it's the same chip! Same cores, same everything! It even supports one more technology than the E8400 does, I/OAT! I did a lot of research last night and the only differences between the two chips is what I posted before! "Zero" gaming complaints!
Quote: Originally posted by Russ: I've done a little research and found that there are three differences between the E3110 and the E8400! First is Intel's number designation! SLAPL for the E8400 and SLAPM for the E3110. VID Voltage Range is lower on the E3110 from 0.956-1.225v, than it is on the E8400, 0.85-1.3625v. As near as I can figure there is one feature that the E3110 has that the E8400 doesn't have! I/OAT or I/O Acceleration Technology. This explains it better than I can!
http://www.intel.com/technology/ioacceleration/index.htm
There should be nothing to affect game performance, in fact I/OAT could even help make games better if you're playing on line! No complaints of any kind from any of the E3110 buyers either! I would think that if gaming performance was an issue, with all the articles I read, that someone would have mentioned it. I think Custom PC is all wet!
Best Regards,
Russ

Trouble is, that CPU isn't available in the UK yet. The E8400 finally has appeared at a few less-known stores, but the E3110 isn't even listed as ever having been available.

That's interesting because I posted a UK link for the E3110!

I see that now! It was in pounds when I first saw it and now it's in dollars. I was up late researching the E3110, so maybe I was just tired and made a mistake! LOL!! Sorry, my intentions were good!

yeah, like comparing athlons to optys and C2Ds to xeons where the optys and xeons are server chips.
I'm seriously thinking about pouncing on one of those E3110s for now. might try a xeon X3350 2.66ghz quad core later.

shaffaaf,
This is from Tom's Hardware!
Quote: I decided to buy the E3110 when I found it on the ewiz.com website for $205 with free shipping. I got it a couple days later and installed it into my EVGA 780i motherboard and had no problems whatsoever. Both my Windows XP Pro and 64-bit Vista Ultimate booted up without any problems. Vista required a restart after installing the CPU drivers for the Xeon, but that was it. All works perfectly on both OSes (I have a dual-boot setup). I did some overclocking as well and was able to easily overclock to 3.4Ghz using the stock voltage. I had read in another forum that the E3110 will overclock up to 3.8Ghz on the stock voltage. I'll have to try that out sometime later this week ;)
For now, I am very curious to know what it is exactly that is different between the E8400 and the E3110's microarchitecture. Is there really a difference that can be measured. So far, all my benchmarks show that there is no loss at all when it comes to the performance when gaming.
Their answer?
Quote: Thats the thing. With this particualr series of Xeons there is no difference. It is more than likely a DP Server chip so it uses the same LGA775 and same specs. You probably wont be able to tell the difference between your CPU and a E8400 at the same clock speeds in gaming or anything really.
Now if it was a MP Server chip thats when the differences come in. Different socket, different chipsets, FB-DIMMS and overall differeces in architecture mainly it being setup for servers. This might have been another chip Intel wanted out there for everyone to be able to use. We shall never know. But as far as we can tell its just an overall nice chip for a good price. Talk about bang for your buck.
I think Custom PC is thinking it's like the MP Server chips, which aren't very good for games and require a different socket!
Best Regards,
Russ

For the record shaffaaf, it's Xeon, not xenon.
As for the architectural difference, that makes perfect sense. The Opteron 165-185s were great gaming CPUs as they used the same socket and architecture as the normal X2s.

I see you have an excellent motherboard, CPU, memory and CPU cooler.
Do you know how to get to your motherboards BIOS? It's just basic math from there. To start off set your CPU multiplier to 8x and your ram multi to 2.00. Then adjust your FSB little by little. Whatever you put in the FSB place, multiply that number by 8 and that's your CPU speed.
