Hey guys, am a long-time reader but first-time poster and I would like some help. First of all the guides have been a great help. Have backed-up many games successfully largely thanks to the info here, so cheers for that...

My question relates to Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. I would like to make a back-up and have had some dramas. The game is on a dual layer disc, so I assumed that I could follow the same procedure as regular single layer games, that is burn onto dual layer media using DVD Decrypter. It didn't work, the game crashed after the PlayStation2 screen...

What did I do wrong? I read that since I have a mod chip installed it doesn't require a re-build. I used high quality (Verbatim) dual layer media to burn it. My screen saver cut in and interupted the burn process, would that have stuffed it up? I found a guide before I posted, but it related to a rebuild for use with swap magic...

Details are;
Game: Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PAL)
DVD Burner: Pioneer DVD 108 Dual Layer Burner
PS2: SCPH-30002 R (Pal)
Mod Chip: DUO2 SE
Media: Verbatim DVD+R DL

Any help or a kick in the right direction would be great. Dual Layer media is pricey so I figured I'd ask before having another crack.

Thanks in advance guys...

not sure that chip supports DVD-9 backups, only a select number of chips do,mainly the newer ones
anyways, you need to split the game onto 2 disk's,which is very tricky, and not for novices...i am not saying you are a novice or anything, but its very hard to get it right
if you want to attempt it,search the forums for the guide on how to do it

Am a bit of a novice, that guide looked bloody hard too...
I think you may be right about the chip not supporting DL back-up too. Just did a search and it would seem to support what you said.

Cheers mate.

There's still a way to play DVD-9 games with a DUO2SE, you need to use the ToxicDualLayerPatcher after putting the game on your hard drive using DVD Decrypter. Thing is, original DVD-9 discs are written in the PTP format, where as the recordable DVD-9 discs are written in the OTP format.

Here's the TDLP, be sure to read the README:

what does the toxic dual layer patcher actually do?

It patches Dual Layer backups so that any modchip will be capable of booting them. Good Modchips like the DMS 4 Pro SE and Matrix Infinity automatically patch DL backups. If your chip doesn't support this feature, then you must patch the DL iso with Toxic DL patcher.

wellllllllllllllll not exactly. pressed dual layers are PTP and you can't burn then except in OTP, the patcher modifies the SLUS file to compensate for those issues.

and not all chips will even read dual layer backups patched or otherwise.

Well that's mainly older chips, correct?

No, and even chips that say DVD-9 supported dont support DL backups.

Just for reference too, I couldn't make this work, even after patching. I applied the patch and it said completed, I burned the game with no apparent errors on good DL media. It goes past the PlayStation boot screen but crashes after the "Toxic - Light Years ahead..." screen.

Have pretty well given up since I have wasted 3 DL discs. The only thing I couldn?t do was change the ?booktype? of the disc, my burner wouldn?t allow it and I don?t want to risk messing with cracked firmware.

Could this be the reason it didn?t work?

System specs in first post?

It could be. The first couple DL backups I burned to DVD+R DL media, I didn't booktype to DVD-ROM, and they played okay. Most likely your chip doesn't support DVD-9 backups, as KC indicated. It does say in the Duo2SE specs that it's compatible with DVD-9, but it doesn't mention DVD+R DL media. That's the most likely cause, it just doesn't support DL backups. Unfortunatly, the Duo2SE isn't upgradable via flash, so there isn't really anything you can do about it.

chips that support DVD-9 but do not support DL backups will boot to the Playstation 2 splash screen then stick on a black screen. this would be the Toxic splash if you used the patch.

this is one of the few games I've played for any amount of time, I've collected every dog tag in every difficulty setting (without using any cheats), I'd say I've got at least a couple hundred hours of play time on it, not to mention the countless hours i played SOL before Substance came out. if i had the bandwidth, I'd seed it for you guys.

and most of all SEED, this has been one of the worst torrents I've upped where leechers refused to uncap upload speeds and as soon as they got 100% they hauled ass.
