Quote: "SONY"................They are what they say, read the label. (Most have no quality claims, I wonder why? ) You get what SONY promises in quality and availble at your local "Circuit City" or "Best Buy" along with VERBATIMS.
Most of SONY media are OK only, except their +R "made in japan", which of course, it's YUDEN media.

I will take the +R Sony they give quality burns, but the -R are just fair. My Toshiba standalone only play -R and really does not like the -R Sony's but it loves Verbatim, Maxell, and Taiyo Yuden. One reason I got new burners that can booktype, got tired of getting rejected Sony disks.

The 200+ SONY 8X DVD-R I have were all made in Japan. This is not common with SONY 8X DVD-R spindles of 50 or 100. The 25 disc spindles on the other hand are commonly made in Japan and have been on sale lately $8.99 at "Circuit City". I will still contend that the SONY brand of blank DVD media +/- Japan or Taiwan is the best of DVD media available at local retail stores. The VERBATIMS I like are only found online.

glad to hear to RITEKG05's are OK. I bought Maxell DVD-R 25-packs for $4.99 each the day after Thanksgiving, expecting them to be TYG01 like my last batch of Maxells. They're all RITEKG05s. I felt ripped off, but this thread makes me feel better.

@dubbac
if you purchased 8x rated DVD-R Maxells, you will NeVEr get the TYG01 coded Taiyo Yudens...reason being, not only will you HAVE to look for the "made in japan" on the wrapper, BUT, TYG01s are ONLY in the 4x DVD-R format, you will NOT find them in ANY 8x DVD-R rated spindle~ :)
the RitekG05s are good, i will stick to my TYs anyday over Riteks, but they are fine quality for the price nowadays~ :) don't get me wrong, i rank them #3 PERSONALLY on my list of usuable media, right behind Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim (MCC coded to be more specific), then the RitekG05s :)
for those on a budget, i wouldn't recommend anything else but Riteks~
anyways, yeah, TYG01 = Taiyo Yuden produced 4x DVD-R media, and on the DVD+R format for the 4x, DVD+R 4.7GB YUDEN000T01, made in japan naturally, but VERY VERY hard to find under the Maxell label.
from my limited knowledge/experience with Maxell, i'm PRETTY sure you will NOT find any more Taiyo Yuden discs in their newer 8x rated discs in either format, however, the Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB MXL RG03.... 8x coded ones are VERY good, made in japan :) as are the DVD+R 4.7GB MAXELL..002 8x , made in japan as well~
good luck

docTY,
that's what it was. The last batch of Maxells I bought was a while ago, and they were 4X. Thanks for clearing that up. What was interesting was that my Plextor external burner would write them at 8X.

@dubbac
Plextor drive will write most media faster than the listed burn speed the only ones so far I found that it won't is the Verbatim disks with the movie reel on them, it will only write those at the rated speed.
@Doc TY
Bit the bullet and ordered 100 TY's -R, because I needed some more -R for my old NEC Burner. Got them from Shop4Tech the price was 31.00 and free shipping so I figured what the heck. The disks came and they are TY GO1's, not a bad deal.

My last two orders from Shop4Tech were the genuine TY article as well. I know that I saw some threads here dissin them some time back, but heck, I got what I ordered. I just got a coupon from them for 10% off on anything that I order so I will be getting another 100 8x +R's shortly. That will make them $42.30 shipped. Not too bad a price for TY's.

I figured for 31.00 for 100 TY's was good, plus it was free shipping, and I did not care if they were 4x because my NEC only burns at 4x. If I want to go faster can always use the Plex it will burn them at 8x. But at least Shop4Tech is delivering what it advertises.

I've been using them for 2 [lus years now and never had a problem with the, but I must say looking over the latest supermediastore.com specials Shop4tech may be a thing of the past. Just my 2 cents worth

very glad to hear from both of you and your successes with Shop4Tech, nice deals indeed~ :)
i no longer "diss" Shop4Tech anymore as many members have come to me with POSITIVE and good experiences with them as of late :), they've definitely improved since i last used them about 2 years ago~ that's very good news~
you have to understand that being "burned once" (no pun intended), you can imagine how i feel about a company that HAS scammed me before, once bitten, never forgotten~ :) but, i just might give them another chance to "make things right" with me in the future, thanks for the heads up~

Many thanks for the kind words gear. You REALLY helped me out with your mechanical wisdom and knowledge when my old klunker let me down. This old diesel mech is way behind in the newer electronic auto industry. Thanks again my friend.

Again, here is another awesome Maxell 8X DVD+R (Hitachi - made in japan) -- I just burned this earlier (DUKES OF HAZZARD UNRATED). Damn, I guess my DRU710A loves these baby as much as them YUDEN and Verbs MCC004 "Advanced Azo". I'll be scanning some of my old CMC MAG so newbies can see how they turns out. It ain't gonna look good, that's all I can say.

I'm working on a spindle of those MIJ Maxell's right now. They are working fantastic.
Alcohol, do you have a read out of a Maxel MIT 8x R03? How would that compare to the MIJ?
Cheers.

Either car.mike or saugmon asked me about my TDK 8X +R printables that coded as Moser Bauer. Here is the answer.
Fortunately, these were given to me by someone who "couldn't get them to work right", so I didn't spend a penny on this crap.

let me ask you guys this, does it make a difference on burner model on a scan?
its not like i am a noob to this.... but i have ran a few scans on my verbs 16x rated (burned @ 4x) with my litey, the results are similiar but not equal to some of the ones posted and the same goes for my ty's .....
i'm just curious.

I'm sure that the burner that you use would be a factor in the quality/results of the scan as well as the media that you use.
