creaky,
Yes, CMC has been manufacturing Verbs for quite some tiem. I was told that they do use genuine Azo dye and should manufacture to Mitshubishi's specs and requirements.
But yes, there are stories of some lesser quality Verbs shipped from CMC plants. I am just testing DataSafe's DVD-R 16x which in fact uses the same MCC dye. So far the results seem decent, but not as good as genuine MKM/MCC made Verbatims. I should be able to publish the results at http://BitBurners.com pretty soon - I just have to finnish with RiDisc Xtreme 16x +R (RITEK) reviews first.

paiger651: Your benq 1640 scans are nearly the same as mine with the MCC-004 verbs. These are some very sweet discs.
The 8x and 12x speeds have fewer errors than the 4x. Beware of burning these MCC-004 at 2.4x. I got way too many crc errors on a few of mine. I haven't tried 16x,mainly 8x for now until I burn a thousand or so.

Installed my new BenQ drive this evening.
Scans removed as not pertinent to this thread, sorry!
I will be looking forward to testing my first burn with this drive in a day or two.
Cheers - Happy BenQ drive owner!

paiger651: The errors on those 2.4x backups of MCC-004 showed up when I tried to re-rip them back to my harddrive. Too many crc errors. This was 4 or 5 discs that I allowed auto shutdown,so I went with a 2.4x burn speed. I never did scan them. If I can't re-rip them later on,they are of no use to me.

Hi,
Whilst I understand the burning @ less than the rated speed. I'd suggest that you try @ rated speed & if necessary drop to the next speed setting. If you compare my scans (all done @ 16x [16x media is all I have]) with those done by others. I think you'll agree that mine come out rather well. Obviously there are lots of things that contribute to good burns @ rated speed. PSU/CPU/HDs/Temp as well as configurations & s/w. Only you can know your setup. But why not try being optomistic, throw caution to the wind & go for it. Some of the poorer scans are definately in part due to too slow a burn.

I agree except I'd substitute Most for the word 'Some' ...
If you look at the last scan (submitted by paiger651) you will notice an excessive number of PI errors around the 0.5GB area of the burn .. I'd wager that this is due to insufficent burning speed .. The Fuji/Yuden media that's being used will burn better at 12x than at 4x ... and at 8x it will produce better scans than ANY other type od DVD ...

just mentioned on another thread that one of my MCC004's failed the burn (but as was at the lead-in stage i was able to reburn with it). They're Indian Verbs and i have 18 tubs of the things so think i'm gonna send then back and get some more TY; whenever Verbs let me down i jump ship quicker than a mosquito

pager651: That overspeed pic- enabled-it will burn 8x media up to 16x. Disabled-and it burns at disc rated speed. I keep mine disable-to prevent overburning the 8x media to 12x or 16x.
One thing about these benqs, they will overburn most 8x media at 12x and some like sony +1x-8x at 16x. It's a very nice feature. One of my pcs has a single benq 1620 and no other reader.I'm very limited on burn speed settings using DVD Shrink and autoburn with Nero. My options on that pc: 1x/2x/2.4x/and max. 16x burn on those yuden000-T02 aren't too shabby either.
2.4x gives me worse scans and more crc errors. Max speed would burn those Yuden000-T02 at 16x. Not much flexibility. Qsuite was suppose to work for the benq 1620 with the B7V9 fw. The overburn speed protection is grayed out on this pc. My last benq 1640 replaced that 1620 for that purpose. No more overburning on that pc.
I leave WOPC enabled
Solidburn set just like yours. I don't mess with those much. As long as I don't overburn and keep my backups booktyped,That's all that matters to me for now.

Hi,
paiger651, my personal settings are:-
1620 retired (on standby for an emergency)
1640 SB/WOPC enabled for all media OS disabled
1650/1655 SB/WOPC enabled for all + media SB enabled WOPC disabled for all - media OS disabled for all media
All my media is 16x MCC 03RG20/MCC 004 + YUDEN000 T03.
These settings work for me. But it doesn't mean that they would suit everyone. If you looked on another forum, you'd see that I really play around with f/w & it's interaction with this media. Crossflashing/backflashing .cvt or .exe files safemode/dos etc. So my settings I'd like to think are optimal to my system. They may or may not work for you. All my writing is done @ 16x with the 1650/1655 & 12x with the 1640 (& 1620 when it was in use). For most users 12x is fine (I accept that if you have something important to you, then playing 'safe' @ 8x is acceptable). This is using 16x media.
As far as SB/OS/WOPC goes for most in the long term SB/WOPC enabled for all media (even with top of the range media there are benefits, if only minimal) This gives greater consistancy. OS disabled, although SB will usually prevent disasters. It's tempting fate if looking for consitant & reliable backups.
BTW Did you know that despite SB being disabled for known media, BenQ recommend it be set to enable for known media. Philips the inventors of SB, have SB enabled for all media as a default setting with their media. Draw your own conclusions.
Added:- With 8x media Taiyo Yuden reign supreme. Write speeds acceptable to very good @ 12 exceptionable @ 8x. SB/WOPC enabled for all media OS disabled, regardless of - or +. TY 16x hasn't been around as long as MCC. So if considering 16x media, for the time being MCC has the edge (I expect this to change along with f/w updates)
N.B. Bitsetting all set to DVD-ROM.
PS. Is it worth moving some of these posts to a new thread, leaving the scans behind?

Here's a couple of scans from the Japanese spindle of SonyD21,a while back using my Benq 1640:
SonyD21 burned at 4x:
SonyD21 burned at 8x:
The taiwanese sonyD21 look a little worse.I'll post them later, from my Benq 1650
2000+ PIF errors is way too much. The benq 1650 handles them better.
