Although this forum for some reason does not like Roxio, here is another PAL to NTSC conversion method.
The tools used are result of what I have.

Steps to transcode PAL DVD to NTSC DVD

1) DVD decryptor (if needed)

2) DVD Shrink (if needed to go from DVD5 to DVD9)

3) Using Womble's MPEG VCR editor: Paste all VOBS to one MPEG,(still in PAL format), save a single MPEG-2 in MP3 format. (most burning programs can't handle AC-3)

4) Using Roxio 7: save as MPEG-2 NTSC, same bit rate
(Takes a long time, frame by frame process)

5) Using Ulead DVD Factory 2.0, contruct menus and burn a NTSC DVD,
(This step was my choice, I like Ulead as a burning software, but it has no editing capabilties.

I have successfully performed this procedure on 3 DVDs.

Question for the group:

Can Nero 6 convert PAL to NTSC like Roxio can ?

How do you use Easy Media Creator 7 to do this?

I have tried everything I know, using videowave, etc., and I can not find an output after loading a PAL AVI to NTSC.

Where do you find the settings to output the video into PAL, NTSC, etc.?

I can't even find a way to switch the clip from 4:3 to 16:9, and properties just gives the properties, doesn't let you change the aspect ratio, and my 16:9 videos look pretty bad at 4:3.

EMC7 does not support 16:9 aspect ratio. A big drawback. The next version will have it. I use EMC7 for editing my home videos, and I like it. I want to upgrade my video camera, and I won't use EMC7, if I do, even though the interface smacks Nero in the butt.

I have Nero and like it too, though. :)

I have a couple of PAL DVD5s and I used Neo DVD to make another iso/video_ts folder while converting it to NTSC and it added another menu and added about a 1GB to the saved file. What did I do wrong? Thanks

Why don't you have anything to drink?

For Roxio 7. To convert PAL to NTSC.

Use Videowave. Select "Video File", then Next, the under purpose pick my settings. You can then Click on the paper icon to Create custom settings. Use the format pull down bar to select NTSC. Set your MPEG, and other settings and then save it as a config. You are no w ready to convert PAL to NTSC.
I have not tried a 16:9 only a 4:3 DVD.

Also, I have now found I have another Option to convert from PAL to NTSC.
I just found out that you use the Womble Multimedia MPEG-VCR MPEG editor to change from AC-3 to MP3 and Convert PAL to NTSC. It was hidden in a menu that just said "Frame rate". After reading the help file and trying it on a DVD. I found that not only does it work, but rendered it in about 2/3 of the time the Roxio method took.
This product is also a frame accurate MPEG editor, that I have found to be very good for making trims, and Cut-paste type editing.
Free trial is here at:

Here's a very simple way to convert movies from PAL to NTSC.

All you need is a program called IFOedit and DVDshrink

First you need to rip the PAL movie files to your hard drive using something like smartripper.

IFOedit basically does what it says, it lets you view and edit the video information contained in the IFO files.

-Start IFOedit, click open, and browse to the VIDEO_TS folder containing the PAL movie on your hard drive
-open the VIDEO_TS.ifo file
-locate the first line of info that has a filmstrip logo beside it and doubleclick it. A dialog box will appear showing all the video attributes.
-change the standard from PAL to NTSC and make sure AUTO LETTERBOX is checked, then click OK

**the values will not show as NTSC until you reopen the file after it has been edited and saved**

-do the same thing for each line that has the filmstrip logo beside it, then click SAVE
-overwrite the orginal IFO file and choose yes if it asks to save as BUP as well
-repeat the same process for each IFO file in the VIDEO_TS folder

The thing is, that this has only changed the Movie files to NTSC not the menu's and therefore the menu's (and extras) will need to be removed in DVDShrink:

-open DVDshrink
-choose Open Files
-select the VIDEO_TS folder you just edited as the input choose REAUTHOR and drag the main movie from the right side to the left side
-click the backup button on top menu
-choose the output type that the Reauthored DVD files will be saved as. You can either save to your hard drive or burn right here if nero is installed.
-click ok

DVDshrink will then author the Movie that has been changed to NTSC. All you have to do next is burn it in for instance Nero.

Yes, you may lose the menus/extras, but it is a small price to pay for an easy way to cheat the system.

Software you need:

you can do so in Nero vision express. i finally got the Nero vision express instructions directly from Ahead Software and i'd be happy to pass them on if you'd like to contact me off board. i was not happy with the results, however; the movement was too herky jerky. i've had better luck using AVI2DVD, TMPGencplus and TMPGEnc DVD Author together. I then burn with regular Nero. There are instructions on how to do this in one of the discussions on this forum. let me know if you are unable to find them.

This is what I do. I'm just converting 6 DVDs as I type this.

------------------
Needed software:
1. DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com)
2*. Canopus ProCoder (http://www.canopus.us)
3*. Ulead DVD Workshop 2 (http://www.ulead.com)
4*. Nero (Nero.com" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com)
5. Maybe VirtualDub-mpeg2 (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/)
6. Maybe DVD Shrink 3.2 (http://www.dvdshrink.org)
*) Not freeware

1. DVD Decrypter [Produces .m2v and .wav files]
Turn off File splitting.
a) Select Mode IFO, Enable Stream Processing
Click on Stream Processing
Select Video Demux
Select Audio Demux
This creates .m2v and .wav files.
If it doesn't create .wav but .mp2 file, then proceed to b), otherwise don't.
b) If AC3 sound not present on a DVD:
Select Mode File.
Rip the DVD, make a simple VOB file. When asked to overwrite IFO files (created in (a)), select No to All.
Open VOB file in VirtualDub, and Save as .wav

2. Canopus ProCoder [Creates .m2p file.]
Source: Open Video File (.m2v)
Target: Choose Basic, then MPEG file, OK.
Format: DVD
Program Stream Only
NTFS (29.97 fps should be chosen automatically)
Convert: Click Convert and wait for a few hours. It makes a .m2p file.

3. Ulead DVD Workshop [Produces .iso image file.]
New Project
Media Type: DVD
TV System NTSC
Video General
Add video (.m2p); when a small window with your video shows up, drag and drop it in Image Play First window. Then erase that small window so that only Play First Windows stays.
Check "Replace Background Music", select .wav file created in (1).
Click Finish.
Click Burn Project to Disk (top right icon).
Standard Play (Approximately 120 min. per DVD if big)
Uncheck Burn to Disk.
Check Create Disk Image File.
Create Disk Image File .iso
Advanced Settings: Choose Region.
Click Burn.

4. Nero

Burn image on DVD-R.
Click on Recorder > Burn Image

5. If needed, extract .iso file and compress it using DVD Shrink 3.2, then burn.

Thanks for your reply. I do the same thing using Smart ripper,IFOEdit,DVD2AVI, and Tempgenc latest ver.
I can successfully convert the video VOBs no problem. The problem is trying to convert the original Menu and all the special clips vobs etc... If I just convert the video vobs all stays in synch. If I try to convert the original menu and special add ons vobs with the original video vobs then the end result is that the video and audio are way out of synch.
Are you able to maintain video and audio sych when including menus etc... with this process?
If so let me know and I will give this technique a shot.
Thanks again for your reply.
