I'm talking about the pre-assembled computers as well. Try upgrading in those.

Well I managed a new Power supply, graphics card, extra hard disk and extra memory until it got too hot in there, only one 80mm fan slot!
Then I got a new case.

Hehe, which suggests to me that they're well designed, but not well made, hence the price. Am I right?

well, some parts are very very well made, like the front of the case i got, great dust filters and everything, comes off easy, but the area where the hard drives sit have little razors holding them up.

Hmm, nothing on my case has damaged me too badly, my Antec 900 is better still though, that's nice and smooth.

Ok. Well i looked at the video on youtube that shows how to assemble the computer. It looks okay to do. However, I am more worried about setting up the computer more than I am of assembling the parts. When all the pieces are put together, do i just put the windows disk into the cd rom and it will run from there. I have never installed or upgraded windows on a computer, so i am not sure of what to expect. I am guessing that even prior to installing windows, there will be many initial installation steps that will be needed after the assembly of the computer.
To clarify, I am in the US, in Pennsylvania to be exact. I would like the computer to be around $1000. $1,200 is just okay, but I really would prefer under that. Also, this price range should include a monitor(19"), which i don't think anybody has included.
Does the case have to cost around $100. Looking on newegg.com, i saw that there are cases for around $40. What is wrong with those?

Nothing much, other than they're not so well made, it's down to personal taste. Just NEVER use a power supply that came with a case, they're pretty much always dire.
As for the windows bit, not really, as long as the PC can see all your devices (which it will assuming they work and you've plugged them in right) then you pop the windows CD in the drive and follow the instructions. That bit's easy.

you need to configure a few things in the bios before loading windows(usually simple stuff) then you just put the cd in and it takes you through the install.
does that include tax? and if so how much tax do you pay there?
Here is my $1150 (no tax) computer (I used canada computers, you will pay less then me when you use newegg):

CPU: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=...0885&cid=CPU.84 $173.99

Graphics: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=...cid=999.243.390 $154.99

It seems the ULTRA PSU that came with my case seems to be fine, but in general he is right. The case it personal taste ans quality.
Windows is EXTREMELY easy to install and you don't have to install anything before. Your motherboard will come with the drivers CD, but those are pretty much automatic as well. The software is the easier part of an already easy thing to do.

No, my price range does not include tax, which by the way is 6%. I guess is much less than in Canada. I just thought that I guess I would have to pay for the Windows program too which would take I think at least $100 more?

Also, I don't need a HD that is 500GB. 160GB should be fine.
By the way, is it possible to edit a message I have just posted instead of just posting a new message.

hehe, I'm in the UK but I'm more used to Newegg's site than any other! That just shows you how many PCs I've specced up for people here on aD. Just wish I was able to help them out with the other part too.

@sammoris and others, why do you say that if i should get xp instead of vista. i'm just wondering what exactly is so bad with vista. i ask cause i remember how ppl didn't like XP when it came out, but now ppl want xp instead of vista. is it because it is new and working out the kinks, or because of some massive faults in it?

It's mainly for the same reasons as before, but there are plenty of things that don't work properly in it.
