Regarding DLs in particular, Verbatim developed the intitial DL specs and has been manufacturing them the longest. Verbatim developed the Photo Polymer method and is the expert at it.

There are now 2 processes for producing DLs, Photo Polymer (2P) and Inverse Stack (IS). The IS method has been developed I think for 2 reasons, 1) to get away from licensing from Verbatim (a guess on my part) and 2) to reduce costs. The 2P method is quite a bit more expensive per disc than the IS method.

Since the 2P method has been around the longest, it has the largest support in burner firmware plus Verbatim has had much more time in perfecting the technique.

There are indications that Verbatim might also be starting to move to the IS method to reduce costs and stay competitive due to their movement of production of 2.4x DL media from Singapore to India.

Thanks for the link. Some of my questions were answered there (the various dyes used and longevity) but not all. I'd like to find more info. Seems like there shoud be a regularly updated buyers guide somewhere.

That link was to be the most current but it doesn't contain a Ritek +R DL MID that I prefer, the S04.

There are lots of things that come into play regarding what is considered "the best". Alot of it is based on the number of people who leave opinions. Opinions are based on what the media is used for (data, DVD), burner, speed, player, method of determining quality, etc. Alot of which is/can be subjective.

The best determination is 'What Works Best For You'.
