I'm not getting power calibration errors on my Pioneer 108 but something is happening on the last several movie burns. I'm using RitekG05 media (have for years) with both Nero and DVD Santa and the same thing happens.
Movies appear to burn fine with no errors and play fine until the last 5/10 minutes when there is extreme stutter, pixilation, loss of sound and freezing. This happens the same on several players so it has to do with the burn - anyone have any ideas ?

very common problem. use decent burn speeds (not saying you aren't), no multitasking during the burn would be sensible, decent media (again, not saying G05 aren't). oh and burning to the outer edge of discs is not a good idea (for instance the default target size for DVD Shrink is 4464MB or thereabouts, i don't even trust that with my top notch 'Verbatim Taiyo Yuden' discs, i stick to 4300MB religiously

My laptop burner wont burn disks whatever i do, only burns to some old DVD-R that you could find long time ago, like 1x ones, otherwise it wont ever burn a game, any suggestions what could be the problem, it reads all disks fine, but doesnt burn, gives power calibration area error sometimes, currently im using a external burner, thats works perfectly, so it has nothing to do with the system, the burner that isnt working properly is also updated to its latest firmware, it is a sony dw-u50a.

BEFORE YOU TRY ANYTHING ELSE, TRY THIS.

All I had to do was open up the tray of my DVD/CDR burner, blew in it real hard with just my breathing, and it worked. We are talking about an easy fix here. Give it a try.

@ creaky

Never had a problem using the full 4464mb setting in shrink ! how would you know if this was the/a problem ?? and
How do you change the setting from using the max <4464> down to say 4300mb ?? Thanx!

the outer edge of the disc is where the dye is uneven on subpar discs.

If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

I'm writing to give thanks to all who replied to me, I thought that I had did so previously but looking through the page I see I didn't.My problem was as many suggested was the media that I was using. I found an old DVD-RW disc and burned an iso file I had on my hard drive and it was smooth sailing again. Got some better discs and no more problems. Again thanks to one and all!!

I have a toshiba laptop qosimo e15-av101 and I looked in my computer to find the name of the drive which I hope is the right name.

it is a: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-830S

I was receiving power calibration errors with my drive and figured it had died as well. I picked up a new LG 4166B, which in a whole other story, stopped working giving me write errors after about 5 burns. Since my old drive is out of warranty I figured I would open it up and see what I could figure out. Gave the rails and the lens a good rub down and it appears to be working again, at least it is finally burning one dvd as we speak, I will still ahve to let it play to see if it is a successful burn. So definitely if you plan on just trashing the drive and it is out of warranty open it up and give the lens either a shot of air or a gentle wiping with something lint free.

Yep, it was definitely the "blowing it with air". I was having all kinds of problems with "Power Calibration Errors" in Nero, and I made about 20-30 coasters... before I found this post. I read through it, and decided to give the "blowing it with air" a shot. Sure enough, that fixed it. The first DVD I tried after that, burned perfectly. I've already burned 12 DVD's since, and haven't had a single problem. It wasn't the media (I had been using the same media all along without a problem). It wasn't the firmware (why would the firmware even be a factor if I've been using the same media without a problem and I'm only half-way done with my spool of 100 DVD's, so the media hasn't changed, the firmware hasn't changed, it was just a bunch of dust build-up). I opened the DVD drive door, and just used some canned air to blow out all the dust. Then I closed the door, and tried to burn another DVD and it worked like a charm.

Thanks for the "blowing air" tip. Who would have thought a little dust would be causing so many problems. Thanks man! Don't sweat the haters, and thanks for the easy and simple fix!

I've tried the air blowing and I still can't produce a DVD burn.
Heck my drive doesn't even recognize my DVD burner. I'm using Sony DVD+R and have never had a problem with them. I'm also using Nero 7.5.02 but this was happening even with Nero 6.6 when I had it.

@Dynamo5 - have you started a thread in the Nero forum, with your logfile. If not you should do that ..

Hi guys.

Long time reader, first time poster.

Bit of a long post here but I don't want to leave anything out that may be relevent.

I have had my Sony DW-G120A for about a month and had no problems, now I am getting a power calibration error almost* every time I try to burn a Verbatim +R DL disc.

After the error the drive has a hard time reading the disc, clicking like crazy, requiring reinserting and then taking several minutes to recognise the blank.

*out of 4 discs used I have two coasters(totaly unreadable), after retrying discs that had power calibration errors, where the burn has started but failed soon after.

I have peviously burnt 5 of these discs with no problems soon after getting the drive.

I have blown out the drive with compressed air, used different power connectors and IDE channels, updated Nero, turned of IMAPI CD-Burning service and reflashed the firmware to no avail.

I think the drive may be defective.

I have two logs, one for a burn that resulted in a power calibration error, and the other if for a failed burn on disc that previously had a power calibration error.

I'm having a similar problem. Yet it's quite different.

I have a "_NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD" i don't know much about it except it came with my computer.

I'm trying to burn a data disc.

I'm using Maxell discs. I tried using an older one which supports speeds of 1X 2.4X and 4X. I've also tried to use newer discs which also support 8x.

I've burned DVDs with the older discs before with Nero, Drag and drop, and iTunes.

Now, however, Nero gives me a power calibration error 3-4% into the burning process.

When I insert the blank disc Windows doesn't recognize it. It changes the drive name from "DVD/CD-RW Drive" to just "CD-Drive".

I bought a Maxell DVD Lens Cleaner but that didn't help.

HERES the twist: I burned a data DVD using iTunes. It doens't have the files I want, as it burned music to it, but it burned it nonetheless.

Any Ideas?

Hi All,
Having calibration problems too, but other weird problems. I havne't changed anything but my new CPU and additional RAM to my pc, and have 2 dvd drives: Plextor PX -760A and a LiteOn SOHW-1633S. Both worked fine until a few days ago when i went to burn and got these power calibration errors. My LiteOn works fine for cds (burning and reading) but won't burn or READ a DVD. My Plextor will read a DVD or cd but wont' burn either. I"ve changed power cords in teh back to both, sprayed air all inside both units, and updated firmware for both. I'm running out of options, and can't really them both being defective at the same time. Anyone have any suggestions? Here is a copy of the last burn i tried to do with my Plextor.

Will cheap quality media destroy your burner? I have used my burner to burn 50 times only with Nero 7 and now my burner always freezes when you insert an empty DVD disc. Having had it installed, the first time experience is that when you insert the disc into the burner, it will load for quite a while, more than 30 secs before you can burn your disc

Right now my burner is not working at all. Please help and tell me what happens. It happens to my second burner as well. The brand of DVD I use is Office Depot.

My question is whether my burner is still usable? Or it is already dead and has to be replaced with a new one?
