I have a different type of problem with my drive. When i turn it on its trying to take a disk!! Even tho i'm not putting one in. When its making this noise i go to put one it and takes it straight away and plays fine. But if i wait till the noise stops then try and put one in i have to force it half way in then take it out then you hear a click, try to put it in again and takes it normally. But if i leave a disk in then its fine.... strange i know. Anyone got any ideas?

it might be the sinsor on the top front of the drive thats bad. it detects if there is a disc iserted or not. does the blue light come on when you turn it on and it makes that noise? does it come on when you barely put a disk in after it done making the noise?
any body know if i put a whole you blue ray drive in will it be compatable or do i need to get a sertain model? ive given up and was thinking of buying one off ebay for like $130. some come with 30 day warrantys.

Yeh the blue light flashes on the front. But once this has done it accepts and plays fine, just when you first turn it on

Sorry and reply to your question lol i think it has to be the same version, but not sure wether changing the blu-ray drive motherboard will help with that i.e change it over to new drive.

well the board is F@cked thats why i was just thinking of buying a whole new drive. since most likely the laser will go.....then the motor....then a small fire will start destroying everything else inside this thing.
someone said (i think) if you buy a new drive (complete) that u have to use your board. corect me if im wrong but for me this will defeat the purpose.

Sony give a 90 days warranty when you ship it to them. they also repair much more than just the drive. its worth every penny and its the easiest and cheapest way around this problem.

that is a very very good question. ive been researching it and so far the information is that you can replace the whole drive.......exept for the board you have to keep THE board that came in you ps3. it is linked to YOUR ps3 and no other board will work. ive tried to ask people that fix ps3 and they all say find somone to fix my board (the little clip that is broken in the pictures). i have found the boards for sale new for $35. if only it was as easy as buying it and installing it.
if anyone has more info on getting the board "paired" with the ps3 please please let me know how this could be done. i have found all the parts to totaly rebuild my drive i just need to work out this one detail.

Just asking tho - does any else with a faulty drive get a whining noise when trying to read a disk?
Mine can't be laser problem, but would a faulty board make a noise like that?

Yeh there has to be a way still looking but sounds like the dvd drive board holds al the keys to the drive that links it to the m/b.

Here we go the info that you need!!!!
Right APPARENTLY on the KES-400aaa you can use a different board but has to be from the same drive type. They are roughly £25 but on the website i found are out of stock. But i'd tring the deck first that the laser sits in, if that doesnt work maybe trying to find one of these boards may work. Not sure if i can post links so pm me and i'll send you the link i have found
OH well heres a link if it works LOL

not all board are swapable, it looks like it must be from the same revision and have the sema firmware on it, so is very dificult (if not imposible) to find the correct contoller board to swap, some time ago (9 months) mi controller board died so i start to see if i find a new one to swap, and after trying almos 10 diferent a have no luck,so after a lot more of reserach i found the chip that contains the info that links the controller to the mobo, its not an easy job to swap it because is a BGA chip, but here you have a video showing how i did the swap, the ps3 is working grate since, i hope it helps, the link is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zh46cR6k3s
PS: sorry for mi english

can someone try this for me? my ps3 stopped recognizing my games and blu-rays yesterday. had it for over 1 year so warranty is out. i read so many posts of people having the same exact problem. anyways i stumbled on to this thread and I was going to go into the service menu and try the "restore file system" (from page 1) when by fluke I got it working:
1. turn the switch off at the back of the ps3
2. press the I/O button on the front and flick the switch back on.
3. keep holding the I/O button until you hear the beeps and wait until it turns off.
4. while you're still holding the I/O button, flick the switch off and on again.
5. repeat again, doing this sequence a total of 3 times.
6. now just turn it back on...it was ask if you want to have your audio and video go through HDMI, etc.
all of a sudden it started working! it appears all my games work but not all blu-rays (terminator 2 and planet earth work but not dark knight or kill bill). Then for fun i did the reset above and everything stopped working again! So i repeated the sequence above 3 times and now it's working!! strange!! what's weird is you can actually hear the blu-ray spinning after the 2nd or 3rd time...like it's getting charged up...can someone confirm this? i doubt it will continue to work but thought i'd throw this out there...

Ive been posting in this thread for a while and my PS3 is currently still not reading disks, I have opened it up a few times and nothing has made any difference. My laser lights up blue BTW.
NOW I HAVE HEARD THAT USING THE RECOVERY MENU AND SELECTING 3. RESTORE FILE SYSTEM can sometimes fix the blu ray drive. Has anyone had first hand experience of this fixing the problem because there are a few other dotted round the web that have had it work for them.
Please let me know if its worked for you.
Thanks

Ordered my lens and frame last Thursday and received it yesterday. I installed it and it plays wonderful. Save all of the trouble and order and lens and frame and swap it out. Very easy to do.

yo spec23 got one question for ya.
do you smoke if so do you smoke while playing on the ps3 or does anyone smoke around it esp when it's on...if so there is nicotine(i shit you not )stuck on the lens for some reason it attrac's it like nobody's business to clean it you have to open the bad boy up (the blue-ray drive)and use a soft cloth like the one you'd use on your glasses say turn on the kettle and put the cloth over the steam that rises and as quick as you can GENTLEY clean the lens.THIS DOES WORK AS I HAVE DONE IT MYSELF and fixed freinds ps3 and everyone of them smoked in the "ps3 room"

Just purchase a new lens and frame and change it out. Fastest way to fix it.
