I have the originaly PS3 60GB got it first few days it was out so warranty is gone....suggestions anyone?
i'd say good luck for finding good lens/deck in good condition. they become rarer and rarer as time goes. i'd advice calling sony and pay the 150$ they ask for repair. its still, in my opinion, the best way to get it fixed easily and rapidly (1 week fromt he time you ship it to the time you receive it). plus you gtet a 90 days warranty if yit blow up again.
The KEM-400AAA wouldnt be what I needed? Cause I could change it out with ease....Im pretty good with that type of stuff. Or do I need something different since mine is an older PS3 ?
yes thats what you need. it really easy to change actually, but the problems is finding a good working lasers that will last longer than 24-78 hours. thats the major problems with this type of lasers. i think people in the last pages stated some trustworthy ebay seller. but dont know which.

if you cleaned the drive, you're good enough to change it. there are several articles on how to change it, just google it and you should be able to do it easily.

As far as i could gather you can use another board as long as its the same revision as the one you are replacing, otherwise you need to swap one of the IC's. I'm testing that theory anyway. Because its coming from USA not sure how long it will take before i get it, but if everything works I'll let everyone here know.
Wasn't the board. It didn't change anything. Will order the laser deck now

Hey man,
I bought my laser lens deck from ebay. I know some don't or say don't buy from ebay. But the seller I bought mine from is pretty good, I bought the lens deck and a lens for two ps3's I own and now work great after the motor died on them.
The lens is dead if you push it back when opened then turn it on and the lens doesn't go back to its original position. It is better to get the lens deck as the motor and the lens are new. Just have to look around alot for a seller that has a high positive feedback.

i received my laser within 3 business days. Easy swap. just pay attention to what you're doing. Nothing snaps out of place when replacing the deck. Meaning if you are trying to remove something and it isn't coming apart easily, you haven't removed all of the screws holding it

when you go to the website psxboy.com and look at the kem-400aaa it tells you where to look on your current laser deck to verify your current part number. then tells u to be sure your part number matches the deck you're purchasing. i believe there's only two types of decks for the ps3 one with one laser, and one with two. regardless the kem-400aaa has 1 and both types are available for sale on the site.
i'd say good luck for finding good lens/deck in good condition. they become rarer and rarer as time goes. i'd advice calling sony and pay the 150$ they ask for repair. its still, in my opinion, the best way to get it fixed easily and rapidly (1 week fromt he time you ship it to the time you receive it). plus you gtet a 90 days warranty if yit blow up again.

Im having kinda the same problem with my 40gb ps3 system, it wont read blu ray at all, dvd and cds fine, but blu ray.. no. Weird thing is that if i reformat the system it reads blu ray but will freeze shortly after and not read blu ray again, I do not want to send my ps3 to sony being its out of warranty already, i would like to diy, but im not sure if it would be the laser eye, the drive itself, or possibly the controller ic( which i hope not) any suggestions?

mine did this too. i think its the laser, if the laser does not light up, then it sees no disk, then no disk = no spin.

Seriously what the hell, Ive had and still play my original NES which Ive had for close to 20 years now and that still works. Its completely BS that it crashes just over a year by no fault of the user and all Sony does is tell you to bend over.... anybody have any suggestions? if not then thanks for listening to my venting
OMG exactly my sentiments. My blu-ray drive just died as well and this is the second time it's happened. The first was under warranty but this time it isn't. I wrote Sony a nasty e-mail how it's ridiculous that we pay out the nose for a sub-standard product that they don't even back up. I hate being ripped off and totally feel like you said they are just telling us to "bend over." In fact, the response to my e-mail was simply "we have checked into your issue and it is out of warranty it will be $149 for repair." ...grrr f-ing a-holes

Okay, so I had a problem just like most of ya'll on here and fixed it by ordering a complete laser platform thing. But after two days of playing games, I went to load my cod4 game and once the screen came up to choose single player and such, it just locked up, so I turned off system and restarted it. Now the discs don't spin. I would appreciate any advice?

Ok. This is my first time here and I have read a considerable amount of the posts in this thread and can't seem to find one describing the exact problem I am having.
About 3 months ago I was doing a routine cleaning of my blu-ray drive and while reassembling the drive my overly long thumbnail cut the optical sensor wire. Before this everything was working perfectly. while attempting to repair the wire I also broke the place on the control board where the wire connects to. I know... stupid. Not having money for repairs at the time. My PS3 went untouched sitting in the closet until 2 days ago when I ordered a replacement control board and optical sensor wire. I made the repairs and fired it up. Everything seemed to work until I put in a disc. It took approximately 45 seconds for the loading icon to appear in the corner. An additional minute or so goes by and it disappeared... nothing. I tried all disc formats (CD, DVD, and Blu-ray) and all ended with the same results. The PS3 also will not play any downloaded content with the new board on the drive, it just freezes on a black screen and I have to restart. I have taken the drive apart and put it back together several times to reassure myself I did everything right and the results were the same. Until today, about 20 minutes ago, I popped in an audio CD and waited... and waited... and the icon for the disc appeared. It obtained the information for the CD via internet but it will not play the songs. This makes me believe there is a problem with the laser, but not playing downloaded games/demos would be a problem with the control board since that is all the PS3 needs to run those, right? No other discs read at all other than audio and the results are the same for every one I own.
The PS3 is a 60gb purchased approx. 6 months after launch.
Both the current (broken) and replacement control board are BMD-001.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I can't help you with fixing your problem but I did just want to confirm that you are correct: the control board is all you need to access the stuff on the crossbar menu. My blu-ray drive is currently broken (awaiting a replacement as we speak) but once I plugged everything together (even with the broken drive)I could access everything (but discs of course).

alright regarding most of you who replaced your blueray lens(kes-400a) and had it stop working after a hour i have a solution for you
i replaced mine to be super stoaked it worked again thinking i beat sony then to have sony kick me in nuts a hour later when it didnt work.
after restoring and trying everything i came across this aricle.
http://www.wikihow.com/Realign-Your-Ps3'...-Load-and-Eject
after doing it, it worked but did not eject cds. SO trying forever to try and align everything perfectly still no go. i spent 4 hours just trying to align the peices perfect and still didnt work. The most important thing of that artile is to make the black platform on the left come off the gear and put it back on. Now if you are ok with it, my answer if you cant get it right with the steps have your ps3 blueray drive open when you turn it on so you can see the inside of it like it was when you replaced the kes-400a. Have your drive in the mode of haivng a cd in there so the gaurds are up. have the rubber things that attach to yoru ps3 disc fully out so there not touching it. SO the disc is just sitting on the nub thing. then as it starts spinning it will be very unstable so press eject right away and the rubber wheels should grab it and eject it. If it does this that means it will accept the cd when you put it all together. You can try and eject and isert the cd a few times if y ou wnat to see if it works for sure before you put everything back together. This is my soution and not recomeneded if you have any other way. Cuz my ps3 makes a wierd sound when its sitting down when its reading a cd but not when its on its side so. i just leave it on its side. i thing something is just rubbing on the cd or something even thou i cant find any scratches

Hey recently my ps3 40gb CECHG04 bluray broke. The strange thing is when the ps3 have been shutdown for over a day it can read bluray media fine for about 2-3 minutes then it frezzes and makes strange sound like its trying to read same sound comes from the bluray.
I dont know if the bluray is dead or not, If its dead why is it reading for about 2-3 min when cold its like it overheating the chips of the bluray or like it healing when cold i dont know. Ive tried reformating hdd in ps3, changed harddrives ,install new firmware, and rebuild database. Any suggestions on what could be the problem, Iam out of ideas.

Hi, can anyone figure out what's happening with my blu-ray drive?
I bought a 40GB CECHK06 with 2 known issues.
1. It was stuck in error 8002f14E loop (unable to update firmware)
2. It doesn't accept any disc and the blue led light is not lighting up.
After hours of pulling out and re-inserting the drive while loading, I managed to update and boot the ps3 to XMB. I downloaded a demo to see if it can play games in hdd, but whenever I tried to start a game, the screen blacks out. So I took the ps3 apart and found out the bluray drive wasn't connected to the motherboard at all (this might be the reason it was stuck in error 8002f14E while updating and blue led not lighting up).
After connecting the blu-ray drive to the motherboard, no more insert and eject disc problem, demo games can load normally.
I'm almost done restoring this ps3, the problem now is it doesn't spin the disc.
I've tried to manually move the lens and it moves back to its original position on reboot. I can also see the a purple laser light up for about a second when a disc is inserted.
What could be the problem?
Since the drive controller is keyed to the motherboard, could the problem be due to the system being updated without a blu-ray drive connected? Should I wait for a new firmware update or buy a new deck?

either he blueray lens is dead or the drink drive is out of line. Solution here
http://www.wikihow.com/Realign-Your-Ps3'...-Load-and-Eject
Im not to sure that the drive would be effected by the drive cuz when you buy a new one it ahs not been used when installing a new firmware. But yet everything works so. you can either try to realign the blueray drive buy a new one or if you think its cuz of the firmware wait for the new one cuz i think 3.1 is going to come out in november. IT better, and it better come with cross media chat.
