But my brothers machine has the same problem. Unless its some weird bug with the modem we use (Same modems), than windows 7 has a curious bug. Restart the computer, and cross your fingers that it loads right this time, is basically how it is sometimes. I suppose there is the chance that its the modem we use. Perhaps the firmware doesn't mesh well...
I have no idea what most of that means :)
I don't let my ISP-supplied router do very much, i prefer DD-WRT to do the grunt work (see my sig).

VirtualBox seems to have very god hardware support, as i say i have some networking and audio going so far. It's very easy to setup a VM, slap an ISO somewhere on the hard drive, follow a few steps to build a VM, install from said ISO to said VM, bish bash bosh and you have a VM running. All you have to figure out are a few settings.

That's crap then if thats all XP mode in Win7 entails, sounds like it's only for getting legacy programs up then, with bugger all else. I'll still avoid it then..

Not sure why or when I did this but it shows the performance lost in VirtualBox well:

1.0 is minimum score I think, but that's inevitable as 3D is probably emulated. I just hope it is actually supported at all. The 3D tests are stupid though, my twin 4870X2s only get 6.3 for the CPU score.

That's obviously due to the graphics. I certainly wouldn't expect a VM of any sort to do crazy graphics, let's be honest, these things are meant to get tasks done, but not gaming at 4000x444 or whatever (you can tell i'm not a gamer, not in modern times anyways)

I thought the Graphics scores were bl**ding obvious I was more looking at how much is lost in RAM and CPU and oddly (probably through the VM going to the the RAM then the HDD) higher drive speed.

Given that I'd only VM for old stuff I don't really need high performance for it.

Keith, how is it that you were able to run Classic paint on Windows 7?

He probably just copied a few files over. A bit like when companies ban/remove Solitaire, you just copy the exe file and one or two others, rename sol.exe or whatever and it works.

You simply Copy and paste mspaint from the Windows (or possibly the system32) folder of an XP install to anywhere on 7. I'd host my folder of 'classic' stuff somewhere if it wasn't for fear that the MS police would come and take me away.

Thanks man. Sometimes the classic interface is more practical :) They really should have implemented it. I do like the new interface, but sometimes the classic is what we need...

And I disagree! What's the point of having a menu, if you have to search for a sub-menu buried who knows where? That's somewhat like having a phone book with just the phone numbers listed, if you don't know where to look! Say what you want, but it belongs on the main menu! It's like looking for the Fire Dept by having to look under "S" for Smoke! And at least that would be intuitive! I stand by what I said! It should have a spot on the main menu as a topic, the same as it was at the Hounds, or other forums I belong to!

Respectfully,

I don't use the 'List subscriptions' in 'My account' as it always maxes out the CPU and takes forever to load. Haven't even used that page in about a year. Wish i hadn't now as it repeatedly locks up Firefox completely ~

Ouch, see what i mean, i have too many damn subscriptions, my (much lesser) work machines used to almost catch fire trying to loading that screen. Don't tell the Admins but i always just do a quick google search for the certain keywords i need to find a thread, it never fails.

Lol at the pinball game being open. I loved PC pinball games, I had a big pack of them - sadly most of them don't work in Win7, some of them even run via DOS :O
The one thing I tried to copy was sndrec32.exe from XP. Sadly, it doesn't work. One thing I'd like to use virtual XP for.
I think you're making far too big a deal about the forum headers Russ. Where else is PC hardware deals going to be? news and current events? unlikely. PSP firmware? DVD encoding? let's face it, other pc hardware and building a new pc are the only sensible choices, and even with a slow internet connection it doesn't take long to open those two pages. I will say this since nobody has yet pointed it out:
Afterdawn is not DVD Hounds
Look at the total traffic between the two sites. DVD Hounds can afford to be laid out as it is as it's a small community group page, rather than a big international forum like aD. DVDHounds can afford to use every sytem at once to organise threads as there is a small enough level of activity. Arrange aD like that and it would be chaos.

Indeed, look how the my subscriptions page annihilates CPU power, it's always done that to me regardless of machine used, it's due to the sheer amount of info being retrieved from AD's servers i guess.

It would be because you are a Mod! You virtually would have to sort through just about every thread in the forum! LOL!! That would take lots of CPU power and time!

Sam,
I remember back when you were King of the One Liners! LOL!! 20K! I've had 5500+! LOL!!

King of the one liners? Not strictly fair. I've always made short posts when only short posts are necessary. Only recently have I started posting big harvardguy style essays, but I don't exactly spam single sentences like some. (Before anyone asks, I will categorically state that this is not meant to be ddp - I'm well aware why he posts short messages)
