Hi, i just got an invite from a buddy to a private torrent site. My question is besided the increased amount of seeders, what are the benefits of a private tracker? Is there increased safety when using a private tracker? Any insight would be appreciated. Thx:)

Indeed, increased safety *though not much, but any little bit helps*, better seed/leech ratio's, generally higher upload/download speeds, since private sites enforce a proper up/down ratio, it's fair to all users, cause everyone is expected to properly seed back what they take.
Torrents also generally survive longer on private sites.

Being paranoid the way i am, i find some of those private trackers suspicious. Im sure alot of them are great, but what if you were being watched and when you log on and such it logs everything you do... BUt then again, its the same for public servers, but its easier to use the "hijacked" defense on public severs that you dont have to register.

*Safer
*Faster(most times)
*Cleaner
*More variety (most times)
*More seed's.
*Generally less retards on there as its hard to get an account.

List goes on, overall prvate is better than public, its a privilage to have a private account so don't abuse it, be a good seeder :D

Thx for all ur input guys:) I did notice dl speeds increase to an average of 150KBps, thats awesome.

@Rav, ya ill seed properly. After going down the private tracker road, no going back:)

One more noob question. Is there any way to upload faster? I have a meg connetion and use Utorrent 1.5. I cant complain with the average 150 KBps, problem is i only upload at 70KBps max. Anything I can to to seed faster? Appreciate ur insight guys;)

Not so much, unfortunately, 70k is pretty good, really. Shoot me a PM and I'll tell you another (better?) method that I won't share with everyone, and NO, it's not cheating, so nobody else better ask. I'm only tellin SVT b/c he tries hard to help people and has a good attitude.

Remember To always have your DHT Settings to off! if your using a Private tracker. both Azureus and utorrent have those settings if not all clients. you will get band in alot of strict Private sites like TL if you don't turn that setting off!!
Another thing is, is that when you turn the DHT setting off it improves your saftey by not showing your IP to the public that you are downloading that :-)Legal:-) file.

It has taken a long time to discover the many different ways to burn, scan, ripp, download, cut, paste and protect.

I know this is gonna sound dumb, but then u say turn DHT off, do u mean in Utprrent turning off the options "Enable DHT Network and "Enable DHT Network For New Torrents"? Just uncheck these 2 options?

Last question i promise, i changed my IP to a static one, do i need to change any of the settings in my router to reflect this, beyond wehn i entered my static ip for port forwarding? Thx

Yes, that's what he means.

And as for static IP, you mean what? That you turned of DHCP on the router and now your computer's IP is ALWAYS the same, or that your ISP switched your modem to a static IP?

And how's that upload fix, btw?

ty TomMelee, will PM u shortly, have a few more questions:)

No, my router settings are default beyond port forwarding for Utorrent. I changed the properties in my wireless connection for my static IP. Do i need to adjust the setings in my router also? Noob question a million - what is DHT, and why do i need to turn it off when using a private tracker?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Not SURE how you're gonna get a static IP w/o overriding DHCP, but...like I said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

DHT is, really, the future of p2p. However, because of enforced ratios, it'll hurt you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_hash_table

Basically, when you sign onto a private tracker, part of the torrent download is written dynamically and includes a key generated based on your (i think) {HTTP_REFFERER}. This is why you can't have a proxy turned on in your browser and NOT in your client, because the key won't match.

DHT shares the key and decentralizes the tracker, basically creating multiple swarms out of one. It means more speed, more clients, blah blah blah. BUT, it also leaks your key, which COULD mean your account gets compromized, but more likely it means your ratio gets WRECKED, because all that traffic's coming from the DHT'd key. Also, private trackers are private for a reason. Allowing non-registered members to grab onto the torrent means...a party that might otherwise be blocked *cough cough* can connect and record IP's...or a banned member can still get content...etc.

So, if you use private trackers, it's best to disable it. If you use public, you leave it on.

Its tough then I geuss, I've been uploading at 10-20kb for a month to keep my ratio high so it doesnt matter if its slow as it has to be done.

Yup, i guess it comes down to that. Im sure a lot of ppl dont give a second thought, just get their stuff and are done with it. Really wish ISPs would cut some dl bandwidth and increase the upload speeds, i can wish......

Its decent. In my opinion, the top three are: Utorrent (easy as hell to use), bittorrnado (also easy to use) and Azereus (if u have the skills to work the client)
