On mine they are the little icon like a file not recognise, the one that looks like a white box with red, green and blue dots. I get the feeling I'm still missing something. HELP PLEASE!!!!!
I am no expert in any shape or form, for example; your icon problem would have me running for advice. As to your "loading" screen problem I believe that to be caused by trying to load "new" games while still using the "old" kernels. you could try a more up-to-date kernel (1.19 or higher) to see if that is the cause of your problem. Hope this helps.

The R4 "Loading" issue is usually caused by the incorrect firmware being put onto the card

1) There are 12 types of R4 card all with their own firmware, some even have exactly the same name
2) The site in my signature hosts them all, so try them all one at a time till you get the unit working

Next time buy something other than R4

Hi there
I actually did pretty much the same things to set my R4 card.
I bought my card from memorybits.co.uk and it is the R4 III Upgrade card. There is no CD with the card but one can download the software for the card from the same website (www.memorybits.co.uk. The steps I did are as follows. I have Vista home edition.
1). I downloaded the R4 software on my desktop (it reads as r4-sofware-black III upgrade)
2). Then I extracted this file and saved the extract "English_version 3.07" on my 2 Gig microSD card.
3). This did not work for me so I further explored the above file into its 4 components a)MoonShell b)mypicture c)R4 d) R4.dat and saved these four files on my micro sd card as well but this didn't work either.
4). All my downloaded games which i seperatly saved in another folder by the name "NDS Games" look like a "empty note icon" and my DS console shows the games not as icons but in a written formate and can not open any of the games.

Now I dont understand where the does the problem occurs.
please help if you could understand teh scenario. thanx

May be a bit of a long shot but have you tried formatting the card and re-loading the firmware ?? Good luck.

The biggest issue with the R4 is the number of different cards all needing different firmware's.

The general rules to eliminate most issues are,

1) Format your micro SD with Panasonics SD formatter (free use Google to find) and use it each time you change the firmware.

2) Download your firmware and extract it straight on to the SD (not onto the PC then transfer)

3) Try the available firmware's - http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/ hosts them all, start with the likely candidates and work your way through

4) Ensure the SD is seated correctly in the R4 before putting into the DS

5) At this stage do not add any roms - get it past the loading screen first.

6) Unless it specifically says - the unit can take up to 2GB micro SD's, if it says SDHC then it can take up to 16GB (currently the highest available)

I'm so mad/frustrated/confused right now!!

I'd be lucky if I could get the 'loading' screen...i'm just getting the ?MENU in red!!

formated sdhc card (4gb) dragged software over...from various sites but nothing seems to work!! I cant get the actual link off the R4i site to work. tried 'live help' he was as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike!! told me to watch the demo video at this link....link didnt lead to it...told him this and his reply 'not sure where it is myself...phone tomorrow for step by step help' duuuh???!!

my friend has just showed me this ....
Quote:
f the R4DS flashcart you purchased doesn't work with version 1.18 of the official firmware (you get a "Loading..." screen, etc), you more than likely have a clone.

If you purchased an R4 and it was advertised as supporting SDHC, you bought a clone.

so an official R4 site can sell clones??!!

I'm trying a different link now (for clones? lol) we'll see how it goes! but any advice would be GREATFULLY accepted :)

COMPATIBLE MICRO-SD CARDS

It uses a micro-SD card to store both the ROMs and the save files. Please, keep in mind that the R4 is incompatible with SDHC--memory cards greater than 2GB. When deciding what brand of memory cards to use, Sandisk and Kingston have been established to be the most reliable.

GAME SAVES

Corresponding game saves are automatically created in the memory card in the set size of 512KB when a ROM is run.

INSTALLING/UPDATING FIRMWARE

The CD included in the package contains, perhaps, the outdated firmware. It is imperative that you recurrently update your version to put up with old and recently released ROMs. To download latest firmware, go to the website aformentioned (http://www.r4ds.com). Once, download is complete, you will see a folder similar to the one shown below.

Now, double-click on the folder. In this folder, the firmware files are contained.

Next, go to My Computer and find the root directory of your micro-SD card. This is the letter assigned to your memory card when it's hooked up in the USB port of your PC using the adapter. In this case, mine is (L:).

Subsequently, double click on it to give you more room to work with.

Select all four files by holding down to either the Shift or Ctrl key on your keyboard. When all files are highlighted, click on any one file and drag and drop them to the root directory of your micro-SD card.

When prompted if you want to overwrite existing files, just click Yes to All.

Well done! You have now successfully loaded/upgraded your R4DS firmware.

*IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE: If you are trying to patch a Japanese or Chinese firmware, please visit the thread here. Thanks very much to snorlax for providing the link and mr. hanky for his resourcefulness in finding the required patch.

ADDING ROMs

You can now start browsing the internet for plethora of ROMs available for download. To aid you in this, you will need an archiving tool. I recommend using 7-Zip as it's a freeware. Again, loading games to your Micro-SD card is as simple as "dragging and dropping".

Safely remove your micro-SD card from your computer. Insert it to the R4 cart, and then place it in the top slot of your NDS. Turn the power on. At the main screen you will see three icons. Touch the first icon, and you will be sent to main directory where you see the folder you created that will hold all your games. Press A. You should now see the game that you've just added. Just cycle through the process if you want to add more games. Enjoy!

great explanation, even a non computer person could follow that....and then there is me! wow!

So i downloaded the english 1.08 or whatever its called, then i unzipped it and i have the 4 files total, drag and drop to card, added a game(which is an nds) then put it in nice and snug, tried snuggly several different ways, then i still only get the all black screen that says loading....and then nothin! i have tried to delete all, reformat and do it all again and still...nothin! but loading....the other cards i have done for my own children worked fine but these two for my brothers kids are awful!!!!

please help and thanks in advance!

The firmware of r4ds.com is outdated , you should try WoodR4 instead .
