@Praetor...

I hope you didn't take offense at my question to you? I know very little about XP ... but I would like to learn more. It certainly seems to have some powerful capabilities. Your procedure seems a little "complex" for me, and pany has already given us a reading where s/he is with this. I figured a "low tech" solution might be best. I am fascinated, though, at the different ways to skin this cat.

Concerning SE and Me...no PM required. A friend and I import a line of webcams on the side. I check driver compatabiltiy for 98/SE, Me, and W2k. He does XP. I also have some old apps. Mostly, though, I have 3 children (who live with the X) that I gave P-II's to a couple of years ago...which they use mostly for IM and surfing. My son likes 98SE, my two girls like Me. I keep their computers running because I love them.

It doesn't sound like a hard disk failure to me, just a severly screwed operating system. If you can't figure out how to repair your problems in a reasonalble time frame, then you're wasting time. Blow it off, reformat and be happy until you screw it again. Oh! and welcome aboard. LOL

Praetor how often did you say you reformatted? LOL

Hmm! My wife has to work tomorrow, maybe I'll just reformat her hard disk for practice.

Just as in "de-fragging" a drive, you have to make sure your drive has enough "free space" on it. Temp files & swap files and such. Are we looking for a high tech solution to a low tech problem?

Restore & back-up programs can consume a lot os disk space over a period of time.

Not deleting you backed up video files can also do that. Low tech is where you should start. Then work up.

Reminds me of when I put a new box together. It had two RAID controller connections (Has SATA also). Hooked two drives up & tried to get them active in the BIOS/set-up. I could name them & they were recognized. Could access them from control panel or anything. "Darn", they are PNP rated, what is going on here? Well, duh, finally figured out that since they are not Drive "C" and were not recognized as the primary drive during, "windows" did not prompt me to format the damn things. After reading posts, a litle light clicked on. Now both drives are functioning as a RAID drive.

Start with KISS when approaching a problem.

Buik,
From what pany says, we have something of a different problem going on here. You're right though, always start simple and go up. Make sure all the cleanup chores are done before crying foul.

However pany got his DVD X Copy worked out on another thread and that prog is working according to pany's word. Usually it is X Copy not working and Shrink okay. So, the system works for recording, the problem is between Shrink and the system. If the prog doesn't work, then something appears wrong in the registry or OS files. If all else fails, sometimes the big gun has to come to bear, reformat.

Before I would spend days trying to find a solution for a problem, I would gladly spend a few hours reformating and reprograming, if I knew that would fix the problem.

No problem I'll just tell her that she has a nasty virus or that she somehow corrupted her operating system, and then I'll convince her that she caused it.

Let me get this straight. This suggestion is instead of reformatting..right??? What is this procedure supposed to do???

The commands you give are copying the existing files to a new temp directory, and then copying a repair directory to the main config directory. This repair directory---where do these files originally come from - are these from the original XP setup or are they updated as changes are made to the system?? I also assume that if I have other problems afterwards I can just copy the Temp directory back...

If you read the post you'll see that I wasn't suggesting this it was only an intepretation of what I thought Praetor was suggesting. I think your operating system is probably corrupted to a point that the fix if it will work at all is going to take a lot longer than a clean reintall.

If you can't do it then find somebody who can. Reformating and reinstallng Windows isn't as hard as you might think and you're going to have to learn sometimes. It takes a couple of hours to get it up and running again but it'll worth it in saved time and misery.

Open Nero and go to Nero toolkit, Nero Inof tool, then at the top configurations and look under the listed devices and check to see if it says DMA on. Then again at the top check aspi, at the bottom it will tell you if your aspi layer is installed properly.

We'll need to know a lot more than just a new PC.
What model?
CPU and speed?
How much memory, RAM?
Hard Drive (HD) capacity and free space?
Operating System (OS)?
What disk drive (burner)?

You can use Get System Info in Nero and post the log info from Hardware. And go to Add-Remove in Control Panel and delete InCD from the Nero Pack.

Packet writing software is a problem with DVD recording, this could be the problem. Rumor has it Nero seems to be having some problems with their new upgrades as well. You know rumors...

ISO is the complete video, audio and command files all in one big file and not broken up. Sorta like a disc in memory. In fact you can take an ISO, load it in an emulator program and the computer sees it as a disc in a drive. In Nero you have Mount A Disc Image under Extras which will load an ISO. The free program Daemon will do the same. You load and unload images as you would a disc and the PC assigns the simulated drive a letter like the real drives.

BTW, the system is more than ample for the task. You would be surprised how many problems come from not having adequate system resources.

Since Sophocles isn't here yet, open Startsmart console and under Extras open Get System Info. Configuration and ASPI are the 2 tabs on the far right. The listed drives under configuration should say DMA on. Under ASPI you have 2 choices, System and Nero. My system shows no System ASPI and Nero ASPI shows installed and working properly. My system works great.

I'm breaking this into bite size chunks.

With DVD Shrink:
Choose what you are going to rip.

Under Edit > Preference > File I/O uncheck Enable burning with Nero. Click OK to close window.

Click Backup.

In Backup DVD window Target Device choose ISO Disc Image under Select Target Device. That sends the ISO to the hard drive. Keep track of where the PC sends the file. Either create a folder and browse to send it there or note the location. You have to find it in DVD Decrypter.

If all went well there is an ISO image on the HD. Open DVD Decrypter and choose ISO Write under Mode. Locate the file (click little folder icons to browse) With a disc in drive and burner drive selected and burn checked, Hit the button, take a break and let it burn.

Double click the Nero icon to open Nero and then go to Nero toolkit it'll be right there where you can see it. When you click it it will display some more choices, choose Nero Info tool, then at the top you'll see configuration, click it and look under the listed devices and check to see if it says DMA on, or if your confused write the informatio down and post it here. Then again look at the top and click aspi, at the bottom it will tell you if your aspi layer is installed properly. The report that too.
