Hi eban...
I'll jump in and keep you on the project,OK. Let's update your ASPI. Go to the link below for the ForceASPI 1.8 download. Just follow the instructions to install. Make sure you also download the aspichk.exe so you can check your results afterward.
http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/
If the above link is dead, try this one:
http://wombleintheuk.tripod.com/Final/ForceASPI/ForceASPI.htm
If this goes OK, download DVD Decrypter from AD, and see if you can rip your Happy Gilmore without any problems?

With my system I got the yellow ASPI warning of not installed under system. It was a green and go with Nero. My system works good without the system ASPI and with the Nero ASPI. But it can vary according to other programming. Perhaps Sophocles will have more to add.

Quote: with aspi system is no go
I took this "no go" to mean that the ASPI wasn't installed properly(?).

Luckily I haven't seen the red warning, I hear that is a damaged ASPI situation. When he said no go, I took it as no ASPI. It could have been a red.

This is perplexing. I thought that I would "play around" with the ASPI, as though I had to do a repair. So I killed the sys files dated Aug 14, 2002. I re-installed Force 1.8 INSTASPI and now the files are dated July 17, 2002. And CHKASPI says the ASPI is not installed properly because "one or more components was replaced by an older version." InfoTools gives me the green light. I wonder where I would have picked up the Aug 18 update? 'Must have been half asleep that night.

@ Sophocles ... I'm wondering, what System ASPI file dates do you show in InfoTool? July 17, 2002 or Aug 14, 2002?

Thanks. Same here, which is what Force 1.8 installs. I've been chasing a phantom. There's a later ASPI version "out there" dated Aug 14, and I had upgraded to it. Since I moved "backward" it flagged CHKASPI, giving me the "not properly installed" line because it thinks there should be a more recent version installed.

The funny thing is I wasn't having a problem with 4.60 and XP Pro when I upgraded. I've neer had a problem with ForceASPI but there are some who say they have. Is it still corrupted bescause both chckaspin and Nero should report a good aspi install?

Apparently Adaptec has two (2) different ASPICHK verification routines. I dl'd the "aspi_471a2" ASPI update from Adaptec, and it has a ASPICHK included. If I run this check, all is fine with the July 17's. If I run the ASPICHK that is available from Adaptec as a stand-alone download (i.e., above link), it shows an improper installation ... due to a later version (Aug 14, 2002) being available. This verification box also looks different than the one included with aspi_471a2. Info tools gives the green bar in both cases ... and I don't seem to have a problem with burning. At this point I'd like to remember where I got the Aug 14 files!!!
I should add here that while I've installed ASPI a number of times, I've never had a problem with it. I thought that if I was going to give ASPI repair advice, I should work through the whole thing. I didn't expect a 4 hour journey.

LOL, that's what we do isn't but we do get there and everyone else benefits as a result. What does Nero Report ? I'll download the new aspchck and see if mine is also registered as being corrupt.

I just downloaded the latest aspi files from Adaptec and used aspichk and it also states that "aspi is fully installed and properly working."

Right. I'm having a hard time explaining this. I've finally concluded that there is something about the standalone ASPICHK routine that not only checks for proper istallation, but checks against version dates previously installed (from the registry?). I had installed those Aug 14, 2002 files, which followed the July 17 ones that Adaptec has published as the latest.
EDIT: (NOTE: The CHKASPI that comes with the latest Adaptec aspi_471a2 download does not recognize these later install dates, and says "ASPI is properly installed and fully operational."
And if you're wondering(?), I did the DUMPASPI to save these Aug 14 files. It made a backup folder, but failed to reinstall them when asked. I then got an error message.
Anyway, my ASPI is OK. That particular CHKASPI just gave me a bogus reading because of the way the routine was written. If I could find those Aug 14 files again, I believe the message would go away.

@ eban ... We had a little discussion going here about ASPI. Jump back in when you get to a posting point with what's going on with your own ASPI check, OK?

Sophocles, I wonder about the Nero Info Tool at times. It shows wnaspi32.dll as the Nero ASPI. It doesn't show System ASPI. A search shows wnaspi32.dll in several spots around the system. Seems the System is using wnaspi32.dll. It is in program files and in common files. A search from a list of ASPI showed this the only one present. I've never updated this and the system works fine with only the wnaspi32.dll.
Thought I'd just throw in a link that has a good article on ASPI and a guide.

Check your aspi with Nero info tool and if your is installed correctly you see all 4 of adaptec aspi drivers listed in the window above the geen line.

I did check the system with the Nero Info Tool. Under system I get yellow with no ASPI installed. Under Nero I get the green bar and the Nero ASPI is listed as wnaspi32.dll. I have never had a problem with ASPI in relation to recording and I have a number of programs. As I mentioned the wnaspi32.dll is located in several places on my system, besides Nero.

Brobear, if your aspi layer is installed properly the bar should be green and above it you should have these listed. I typed them just as they are listed in info tool.
Wnaspi32.dll 4.71 45056 bytes July 17,2002
Aspi32.sys 4.71 16877 bytes July 17,2002
Winaspi.dll n/a 4455 bytes July 17,2002
Wowpost.exe n/a 3505 bytes July 17,2002
The bottom 2 are marked N/a because usually WinXP doesn?t use them, but if you run aspichk they will also be listed as versions 4.71.

I am aware of XP not needing Winaspi.dll and Wowpost.exe. They are not on the system. As I said, Wnaspi32.dll is in several locations. Aspi32.sys is not on the system. I've not experienced any ASPI related problems. System says no ASPI and Nero says Wnaspi32.dll.

If your system is just using the Nero aspi It could cause probems with other equipment that can't access it or hamper their performance. Try ForceASPI.
