I just wanted to ask everyone what is the big deal with this game and how is this fun?
I'm playing it right now because I'm trying to understand the allure of the final fantasy games.
I mean how is selecting attack and then having no control over your character(really) fun? and who wants to coordinate all those licenses and gambits and stuff.
Everytime I get into a tough battle they basically kill my whole party with one swoop. when I go to heal and run away they just kill you before you get a chance.
Isn't the idea of jumping out of the way and controlling your attacks with different weapons and magic in real time more fun? I'm just trying to figure out why everyone likes these games and more traditional turn based games
I've played GTA, Resident evil, MGS, Battlefront, grandia II, god of war. I'm just confused and frustrated. there are beautiful environments but is the fun of this game the story?

If your new to Final Fantasy, XII isnt the place! Play X, or find a 7,8 or nine and try them out, then you will see the allure. XII is a good game, but the battle system is from XI (the online game). Ever release prior to XII was traditional, turn based combat. Every game including XII is beautiful, but if I were you I would check out earlier releases, and then you will see why so many people are final fantasy fanatics, including myself.
PS - If you do pick up another Final Fantasy, make it 7......its the reason why RPG's are mainstream now-a-days. Will take you 90+ hours to discover everything, and every moment spent is well worth it :)

Yeah dude, playing XII for a new Final Fantay gamer not a good idea. Play 7 first. It really is the mother of all Final Fantasys.

ok, this might be the worst game ever. I mean I try to go on mob hunts and clan hunts to get the nidhogg and the clucktrice and just die every time. guess i'm not at a high enough level yet, but it sucks. I mean I have over 300 backups I need to play and I need to get through this.
I mean why aren't you given enough different skills to get through the levels. this really blows. I guess I'll try FF7 and FF10. what a shame

7 is a goodie and one of my personal favorites, but FF2 & 3 (snes) also known as 4 & 6 (playstation), are old school classics and these were the titles that got me started on rpgs in the first place.

My favorite is the Japanese number 3, On SNES, It was so awesome...
You really have to put yourself in the frame of mind to play them, you have to be patient, Once again, XII is not the place to start... I'd suggest 9.

7 is the considered the best because it made RPG's mainstream, you werent a dork for playing it....and at the time, the games visuals were as good as it gets. Graphics dont me sh!t, all games now a days look nice, but suck.....you know it, I know it, we all know it. Gameplay is the most important factor.
IMO FF 3 for the SNES was the best FF, i still play that to this day.

If Square made FF 7 for the ps3, i dont even know what i would do, cry and do backflips come to mind lol. 7 is an awesome game, not my favorite, but to see the game that made RPGs ok to play for the average person would be awesome, and I would be first inline to buy it.
You really should check out this thred, its all about a FF 7 remake for the ps3 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/198402

stang, thx alot for giving me that thread...gee, some points i just couldnt agree more. yes, remake is a truly dillema for SE cos it really has high profit as much as stakes.. we gamers are selfish and have all kinds of requests that even god cant give only one answer for. as for square, they must think one thing clear before start to work. ie. whether they can afford not-short time and not-little manpower to this project to satisfy most of ff fans. i think they prefer to work on ffxiii and so on...
anyway, hope is hope. miracle wouldnt be it if we knew it will come, right? -_-b

The basics of the battles in FFXII are the same than in FFVII, the ATB system, true that FFXII has a high level of difficulty but the game gets better early on when you have more charas and magicks.
If I have to compare FFXII to the others FF the game would be the second best (the first is FFVI) the story is a lot better than FFVII or X and the characters are not as cliched as in FFVII, it's the largest FF, not only in gameplay time, the cities and the overall world in FF is enormous, FFXII has the biggest world in a FF (with exception of FFXI perhaps).
If you don't like FFXII don't bother to play FFVII or X or almost any of the ps2 Rpgs, you simply don't like Rpg.

Go play BOF V

The fun of a traditional J-rpg is not the hack and slashing, the fun relies on the decisions you make equiping your characters with the apropiate equipment and magic for each moment, in battle you see if the decisions you made were appropiate or not.
The strategy and the thinking is more important in a j-rpg than the constant action.
As always, feel free to correct me if something I say (in terms of grammar) is wrong or weird.

yup, I meant Breath of fire V: Dragon Quarter, original + challenging = Great game.
It has a great and different-cliché free plot, well told story, believable characters, and a very deep battle system.
