Estuansis, you broke out Far Cry again!! Yeah I remember the HDR. Valve was just messing with it in that little HL2 giveaway segment with the old man at the seashore, before they finished EP1.
Well the missile trigens are scary bastards, that's for sure, but it's interesting - they shoot the missile straight at you from their right hand, and if you stand still, it goes right past you on your left. That first place they introduce them when you kill the merc and take over his 50 in the building, you see that effect. They are coming at you firing the missiles, and you are locked into the 50, but all the missiles go right past you on your left.
The little trigens are quick scary little guys. I never tried this, but the forum I went to said you could hide from them in the bushes, same as hiding from the mercs.
Yeah, with some patience, the game can be beat. But you are right - it's not exactly like COD4 even on highest difficulty, where you can usually take a hit and duck, and then recover. Those mercs will blow your head right off. It's more like COD4 MP going up against a SAW - you're dead before you know the guy was even there.
That's why they call it realistic.
I went back to the game after beating it without rocks, and tested this out - it works: Beat it a little more easily by 1. throwing rocks, then 2. check the danger meter. The forum guy said the AI mercs always go from Green - they are relaxed, to Yellow - they are somewhat alerted, to Red - they are on high alert looking around for you. They take about 2 seconds or so to go through those distinct changes, and you can see the colors changing on the danger meter.
The forum leader became such a stealth fanatic, he went through practically the whole game on knife only - even the top of the aircraft carrier - of course he took out the helicopter like I did before he got up there.
YOUR way of jumping out at the beginning is a way to skip the whole thing - that works too - but if I sent you my saved games for the aircraft carrier, you could play that one part on realistic setting, where you'll be climbing up the ladder, the heli is already dead, and you have the p90 and the colt - total of 80 rapid fire rounds on the Q quick change key - plus about 5 grenades. You sneak up, hide behind the boxes, and take out the guy on the platform behind the mounted machine gun - before he notices you preferably. (The forum leader took out that guy with his knife then used the machine gun on everybody else) When you are crouched down with the colt on single action mode, you have almost the same level of accuracy and impact with head shots as a sniper rifle - one shot head-shot kill. Then all the mercs are there and start closing in - you lob grenades, change to the p90, kill a bunch of them, use the colt for farther distance, and you will actually see the mercs retreat - one of the very few times in the game that they run from you.
Let me know if you're interested, and I'll zip up the saves from that section, or any other, and email to you, or I'll go to my web site and see how to make fts (??) file transfer work, the way the internet used to operate before the web.
If I figure out how that works - maybe Sam knows - I can store the saved game files there, and you can download as you like and try them.

lol nto from ebay, from another forum, is a brilliant case, but then while i was cleaning it today my brother buckled over it and now it leans bent, and the PSU cage is now mashed.
:(
well he now paid me the money i lost, but atleast i got a floppy and a DVD drove from it LOOL, and ill take it to york and see if sam will help me fix it :D
and for boozer, ofcourse he is going to marry his cousins, well as long as by a certian age he hasnt found his perfect one!! lool

but if sam says they are okay, and his PC has to eb pin drop silent :P then i might just forget the water block. ill just get a CPU/NB/MOFSETs blocks.

They are far from silent, especially in a demanding game with 100% scaling, like COD4 when playing a Zombie Mod... hehe. With CF running, at times the card can get excessively noisy, but overall due to the pitch of the noise it doesn't drive you mad, and it's ability to fall back to dead silence within 15 seconds of closing a game is very welcome too. It's idle noise that really ticks me off, and for that the 4870X2 really is up to silencing standards.

@Sam, do you play games using speakers or headphones? If speakers then the sound of your card makes at load will bother you a little, but if you're using headphone instead then it shouldn't...just like me. You'll die if you're next to my computer. lol

Yeah, Lost Coast was the first use of it in a mainstream 3D engine, but Far Cry saw the first use in a full game. Believe it or not, CoD2 uses some kind of HDR. Don't believe me? Look at the sun. It's using something.... maybe advanced bloom?

EDIT:
I got all the way to the cave part right after Doyle picks you up at the pier before I got stuck this time. On medium difficulty. After you start fighting rocket Trigens(not there yet), the game gets extremely hard. Stealth is the name of the game here. Stay in cover at all times and stay moving and you're pretty safe.
I'm currently using the M16/M4/Colt as sort of a hybrid sniper/assault rifle. It's got the penetration I need to take out a guy quickly and easily at close range, and it has the accuracy I need to have killed almost every guy on the carrier before I entered.
Oh yeah. Like you said, I've found that taking out the chopper quickly is key. I played through it again(I've gotten better) on an even higher difficulty(medium vs easy) and was able to shoot the gunner out of the UH-60. After I took it out, it was no problem to clear the guys near me and shoot out the bridges so the rest couldn't rush me. Then I just sit in cover and wait for them to pop out until they're gone.
And I'm using the silenced MP5 in semi auto for quick and quiet kills. It makes it easy to take a loan guy out in the thick jungle. Usually the groups are spaced far enough apart that they don't see eachother through the foliage. I just pop a guy in the head and find the next line of sight through the brush. No open spaces here. Learn to aim through foliage.
Also, the 8800GTS doesn't seem to be able to do HDR+AA while the HD4870 can. I get the HDR but AA won't work when forced in the CP and I get visual glitching(ground is transparent) if I try to use the in-game AA. Go figure... TWIMTBP my arse. Any tips to get it working?
Anyways, like I said. Excellent game, I love it. It's just too friggen hard! Even after having a much easier time on this run-through(after maybe a year of collecting dust), I still have to retry most segments at least a few times. At least the checkpoints are set up decently :P
Score
Graphics: 9/10(easily looks better than Doom 3, IMO)
Gameplay: 8/10(I love a good stealth game)
Overall: 7/10(only for the stupid difficulty)
Other thoughts... The lighting and shadowing in Far Cry is much better than that of Crysis, IMO. Especially with the game's excellent HDR enabled. The lighting in Crysis is more detailed and advanced, but the shadows can get pretty nasty and glitchy sometimes. Far Cry, on the other hand, has excellent lighting effects which Crysis didn't do quite as well, such as the foliage shadows on your gun. Don't tell me that isn't pretty :D
