soju,
I'm a little confused what the TV has to do with your problem. Isn't your DVR bridging the link between your incoming cable and the TV? If so, the TV is really irrelevant since it is downstream in the signal path from the DVR.
It sounds like you manually set up timer programs, but continue to permit the TV Guide listings to download. I disable the TV Guide download entirely. Never had a problem recording the wrong channel and have not had a U99 since mid-August. That's where I'd start, disabling the TV Guide download to the DVR.

Cheryl saved the day again.
Apparently Comcast provided an alternate PBS channel in the 90's range to act as a host channel. Unfortunately, the channel they provided is supposed to cover both the Baltimore and the Washington, DC markets, but TVGOS only recognizes the channel for one of those and I'm in the other (of course).
Cheryl was able to recommend a zip code I could enter that would "see" the analog channel to get lineups (it found 3 of them). Then all I had to do was remap the PBS channel to point to the one in the 90's. I also moved that channel to the top of my lineup for good measure.

Skatter21...You are the man!!! I have never been able to get Cheryl to return any of my calls or emails, let alone give me any recommendations! In fact no one has contacted me ever about what the problem is or how to correct it. Good job to you to get some help.

Well vulcanusa, the problem was so simple it is almost stupid. The IR Blaster which is supposed to sit in front of the cable box to get those signals between the cable box and the DVD recorder had gotten pushed under the cable box so no signals were being sent!! Put it back where it belongs and all is fine.
Panasonic tech support was hilarious telling me all these crazy things that I had to do now...even that I had to manually change the channel on my cable box everytime I recorded a different channel!!!
Anyway, I am back to being a happy recorder. BTW, the TV guide does not seem to interfere with the manual timer recordings. They come and disappear with the good and bad weather!!! Thanks for the reply!

Dear Katchoo,
My brother spoke with Carol - she suggested some things that might help - changing both KCET channel entries to 97 - changing both KCET channel entries to 6 - the second suggested fix worked - apparently because Adelphia passes the KCET signal completely intact including video, audio, and VBI captioning and TVGOS data - so that I get the KCET OTA (over the air) channel 28 signal through "classic" analog cable channel 6. We will wait over weekend to see if fix is stable but if their working theory is correct the fix should be stable.
My understanding is Carol was prompt, very patient, and went way out of her way to be helpful in diagnosing and repairing this problem.
We should find some way to commend her for her kindness and efforts on behalf of customers who otherwise deal with manufacturers who are quite frankly clueless about diagnosis and repair of TVGOS problems.

Boy, it sounds like I am the only one with the bad luck in dealing with customer service. But frankly over the last year I have sent over 20 emails, called Panasonic and both the TVGOS and Adelphia at least 12 times and left messages each time. Not a single returned phone call or email. I read these messages religiously in hopes of finding a solution but nothing suggested has ever worked.
I wasn't able to follow your suggestion, I don't know what the KCET thing is or how to set it. If you can help, I would appreciate it.

The fix of setting the TVGOS host station (KCET - the local PBS affiliate) entry - automatically set to Channel 6 and Channel 97 - both to Channel 6 - appears to be stable after one week testing.
This is on a Panasonic DMR-E85 with firmware from Panasonic site.

Quote: I too have Adelphia, Cleveland Ohio area, zip 44041. I subscribe to the digital system and now added HD. I haven't been able to download the TVGOS but once before the big U99 error situation. I have to run the cable through the cable box to get the digital and HD services. For some reason this disables the TVGOS. It's a real pain but one I have to live with. I have noticed recently that when I turn on my tv and get the dreaded "The search for data has failed" screen, the Ads on the left are updated. It's interesting that these get through fine but the listings don't. Does anyone know why this happens? I know if I try calling Adelphia or TV Guide, I'll get no help. ....Katchoo
On TVGOS diagnostic 753159852 Screen 1 my Host Channel is 6 yet on Screen 7 my download channel is 96. On TVGOS lineup both Channel 6 and Channel 96 are identified as KCET. KCET is my local PBS station and TVGOS tends to use the local PBS station as their download host. Cheryl's advice (because my host and DL chanels were different) was that if you have digital cable you should go into channel setup and change both KCET entries to the channel in the 90's. Then I would try a reset (653214741) and turn your receiver off for 24 hours.
I take it, like me, you receive a channel lineup, channel logos, and promos. You might look at Screen 2 to see if you have a lot of Type A and Type B data with few Acor/AErrs/BCorr/BErrs. You might also look at Screen 1 to see Next DL date & time (these are in UTC which is also known as GMT [London] time - look at top of screen for the current UTC time). Finally look at Screen 7 for LastDLStart and LastDLEnd - if DLEnd is before DLStart the last DL probably failed. Also make note of the LastDLChan. BUT . . . don't keep interrupting the initial download by turning your receiver on and looking for the data . . . because if you keep interrupting the DL you get no data.

I would love to find out what is the correct channel to get TVGOS information in NYC, using Time Warner Digital cable service. Some channels do not appear on my channel lineup, so perhaps there is a better channel than the one my E85 is using now (channel 51).
Any help will be appreciated.

My DMR-E85H was manufactured in April 2004, but I've only had it just over a year now (i.e. no more warrenty) and I got the U99 error. I have gotten the U99 before, but I just reset the unit by holding the power button for 10 seconds and then reset the TV guide feature and the unit eventually returned to normal.
Now the unit goes through "Please Wait" "Self Check" then appears to come on with the time remaining "R56:00" and then jumps to TV Guide with no data available. Then the dreaded U99 appears and nothing works except powering off and the special press these three buttons on the front panel that I have seen in these forums.
I only learned from these forums that there are Firmware upgrades (sure would be nice if Panasonic mentioned this in the manual). I tried using the Firmware from Roger's Snafu web site, by forcing open the DVD drive (using 3 button combos) putting in the CD-R and toggling the the power. I get the "Bye" message but then the system doesn't restart. Turning it on again myself didn't help. Roger didn't think you could upgrade the firmware except by exchange Hard drives, but some in this form thought forcing the drive open would work. Has anyone had success with this?
I notice on Panasonic's web site they reference a DMR-E85HP firmware (4/12/05), is this different the the DMR-E85H? I also notice some reference to DMR-85HS. Are these all the same units and the firmware is all the same?
---
Edit -- Last night I went at it again trying the skip-reverse, time slip, and open/close buttons. Hold for 20 seconds, Power Cycle, and Up/Down Channel. I never got the L1 12:00 flashing factory reset people described. But it did open the DVD drive to enable me to put the new firmware in. I don't know what did it in the end, but after only 10 minutes of doing the same thing over and over, it finally Uploaded the new firmware and cleared out the U99.
Moral of the story: The button combinations on the front of the machine give inconsistent results. If it doesn't work for you, keep trying!

Hi, all
I haven't had a u99 in ages, but my unit has another annoying habit of being incapable of recording LOST on ABC. I've tried deleting the listing and re-entering it, timer only, etc. Is there a no record bit sent out for LOST or something? It's the only show this ever happens on and it's week after week... I sort of have to be in class a that exact time!

Carol called ONE TIME and promised she would return my call if I needed further assistance. I took her up on her offer, I left about 4 messages. No call.
As far as I'm concerned these recorders weren't designed to record and view what was recorded unless you're careful to use the machine during a small window of opportunity, least you upset the four or five downloads necessary to update the TVGuide.
Will the next generation HD recorders be better? We'll have to wait and see. I know I won't twist myself into a knot for customer service. It either works like it should or it goes back in the box and back to the store. Absolutely no online purchases of this nature for me ever again.

This is not quite the forum for this problem but don't know where else to post it.
Recently, I rewatched some DVDs that I had edited about a week before and burned to DVDs.
Can't believe what happens when playing back on another DVD player. At certain spots where editing occurred, the DVD actually will skip over a whole section of the show - like 10 minutes and it will even do it more than once during an hour-long show. Was watching a show and all of a sudden, the DVD ended - cut the last 15 min. off.
Went back to watch again (on 3 different copies of the same dubbed programs) and it did the same thing. Have tried recording on different brands/different speeds and all the same on certain programs that were edited. Inconsistent with edited shows as some play back fine. This is quite frustrating as I have been editing foreign dramas for about 1 year now and did not realize how bad this may be since I usually just store the finished DVDs.
If I play them back on the Panny DVD recorder, they are fine but on 2 other DVD players, I get this terribly shortened playback - all at spots where an edit (commercial cut) was done.
Again, playback on the Panny is fine but on other players it is a total loss as far as I am concerned! Sharing recored/edited DVDs may end up being senseless now.

Better ?!?! ... I've got a Scietific Atlanta 8300HD from the cable company, now... other than not having a DVD recorder built in, and not owning it .... this recorder is true HiDef, surround sound, 2 tuners (record 2 shows at once) + watch another at the same time. Pannasonic is good for what it is, ... I've seen hidef dvr's out there in the neighborhood of $1000.00 give or take. But the Panny is pretty decent all things considered.

Good to read your positive feedback. I like the dv recorder cause you can record 2 programs at the same time.
But RX7Fan, do you copy the shows over to your hard drive Panasonic to burn on DVDs? This is the only hangup with the dv recorders - no burner.

Soju,
Yep, ya can copy ... the 8300 has a "record to VCR" function (substitute DVD recorder) I think the one you have has the same function. The 8300 HD is pretty nice, 5.1 surround, true hidef picture, 1080i, if I remember right, component, HDMI, and S-video out.
If you are a Techy Geek like I am, .... it will also allow you to connect an external SATA drive!!!!!! I bought an external enclosure and a new 80GB drive (Doubles what the 8300 has), .. never got to hook it up, .... might try tonight though, one of the guys I work with says he has, I believe him. .... I've got a brand new 200GB SATA, but not sure if I want to have to navigate though all that stuff saved on the drive!!
Short version ... If I could actually buy an 8300hd, I'd do it in a second (other than the cost would probably be pretty high)

TForce1,
I have never had a problem recording Lost. However, I operate with the TVGuide disabled.
According to some co-workers, no broadcasters are employing the copy protect flag yet. And when they do, it will begin with premium content (e.g. HBO). I can't vouch for the accuracy of this information.
The broadcast copy protect flag is really a "one copy only flag", not a "prevent recording flag". For example, if you record a copy protected broadcast program, you should be able to burn it once to DVD, but then the DVR automatically erases it from the hard drive.

soju,
Quite awhile back in this thread there were some posts about problems playing over an edited spot in a program. I don't recall the skip being as severe as you are reporting. There was a solution. I think it involved re-editing that section by a frame or two. I'll leave it to you to try and find those posts. I presume the DVD-R plays fine in the Panasonic recorder where you burned it. You might be able to re-record it to the hard-drive, re-edit those sections, and burn another copy. But I'd recommend finding those posts first and then perhaps e-mailing the author or posting to him here specifically.
Good luck.

How do you "disable the TV Guide download entirely" on the dmr-e85h?

Capt57,
Disable TVGuide Download:
"Channel/Clock settings when TV Guide On Screen system is not used"
(i.e. pg 43 of the manual).
When you enter the Setup menu and navigate to and select the "Auto Channel Setting" option, you'll be prompted with a message that says something like: "TV Guide download will be disabled if you continue, do you wish to continue?". Select Yes. Channels will be scanned, then you'll be prompted to proceed and have the DVR automatically set the clock.
Some have complained on this thread that the "Auto Channel Setting" option under the Setup menu is ghosted out. In that case, you have to return the unit back to factory preset condition (explained on pg 43 by using chan up/down buttons on the unit). At least one poster states that he could never get the "Auto Channel Setting" option to highlight. It's possible his problem had something to do with the fact he informs the unit he has a cable box attached. I'm not certain that is the reason, but I don't have a cable box, just basic cable.
If you ever lose power to the DVR or return it back to factory preset, you'll have to go through the TV Guide download disable procedure again.

TForce1,
Is Lost the only program on that channel, that you try to record? I've had problems recording anything on 15, which was my host channel. Have you tried leaving the unit on before Lost starts? This would insure the dvr isn't busy trying to do a guide download.

Hmm... acutally, yes. It IS the only show on that channel I ever TRY to record... I would have thought a timer recording would have taken care of it, but it didn't last night. I'll try the leaving it on thing, since I leave two hours before it airs and get back 15 mintues after it's over anyway.

Hi ALL,
I have a Panasonic E85 and am in the UK. My unit seems to be in a "SELF CHECK" loop. Basically it powers up from stanby automatically does a "SELF CHECK", I hear the Hard Disk power up then the display completely dissapears and then the time appears and it goes into "SELF CHECK" again. It just keeps on doing that.
The above started when I put in an original Firefly Series 1 first DVD in the drive.
I have borrowed this DVD series from a mate and I can't seem to get the DVD out. I have looked through the forum and tried various key sequences, with no luck.
I even disconnected the Hard Disk by opening the unit up and powered it up, but the unit did not eject the DVD and re-connected the Hard Disk and the unit is doind the loop again.
My last resort is to get another 80GB Hard Disk and swap that over, but Im not sure if that would work. I would like to keep my existing Hard Disk files intact as Ive not watched a few programmes.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much for anyones quick response in advance.

Thanks RX7Fan for the info re the 8300HD recording tro the hard drive (instead of the VCR). this would still be a real time record but will try it one of these days with the 8300. still have to decide if I will pay ++$$ for the 8300HD! hmmmmm
and thanks also to VulcanUSA re the info re older posts re my problem with edited spots not replaying well/skipping on other DVD players. Tried re-editing one I did today so will see what happens...and I'll go look up those old posts too.
Appreciate all the input!!
