I'm guessing the disc was not empty? The first thing I would do is start with a brand new dvd disk, that wasn't formatted by another app. In other words, use a disc that was never ever used before. If that solves the problem, then you've narrowed down the issue, and the guru's can help from there. You should be able to write to RW and erase, but sometimes programs like Roxio, Nero, countless others will format the disc in a way that only that App. can recognize. Roxio did this many times to me.
Good luck.
When in doubt, use a hammer. When further in doubt, find a bigger hammer.

Welcome aboard "Nihilator 2,"
So pleasantly refreshing to see an adult called in to the aid of a child who has gotten in water just a tad too deep.
As you see, our little friend took undo offence at a lesson offered to enhance his knowledge here online.
Pretending to be a senior gentlemen wasn't as successful as he / she imagined it might be . . .
The children of today truly believe that they can be anything they wish on the Internet. All is equal there. Neither age nor education matter, it is a shame that pretending you are something you are not can lead to exposure . . . It's a lesson that they were not expecting, sitting so securely behind their bedroom door, away from prying parent's eyes, a balloon they did not expect would, "Pop."
One can only hope and pray that they will listen long enough to avoid some of the pitfalls we've had to extricate ourselves from at differing times of our lives . . . As I'm sure you well know, "Those not learning from history . . . . . . ." I pray they will learn.
Cheers,
Quote: If you're going to quote Monty Python, you should get it right.
JPD721, I'm a Holy Grail fan myself BUT
that post wasn't from our "child" Nihilator, nahhh, it was from the counterpart. I honestly doubt our "original" Nihilator would appriaciate nor be able to quote from MP. Not now at any rate but In time perhaps, in time - :)
But then again . . . . :(
Quote: programs like Roxio, Nero, countless others will format the disc in a way that only that App. can recognize.
It would seem that our "adolescent" Nihilator hasn't used his towel yet . . . regaling us again with his unsupported expertise. Please elucidate upon Nero's and Roxio's "special formats" if you don't mind. Pple are here to learn. If you have something to teach, teach. If you wish to muddy up the threads by demonstrating your lack of knowledge, Please remove yourself from this forum post to the Safety Valve where pple may post about anything and members are free to respond. The very vast majority of the pple in this forum are here to acquire honest and precise information, not the ramblings of a child pretending to be knowledgeable about that which he is not -
The Safety Valve -
http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/17
At least by posting there you won't unduly influnce pple who are interested in, and who expect bonafide help with their problems. You'll also be further enlightened by the comments which I'm more than sure you'll elicit.
Pete
mattdogg,
So sorry that someone has attempted to assume my persona, there are some who just LOVE to pretend - - - this is the real me :)
Let's check your DVDD. It seems the problem lies there.
Since you haven't mentioned which guide of mine you were using, may I assume that you were ripping compressing and encoding with DVD Shrink and all seemed to go alright ?
Continuing in the same stream, let's have you delete your DVDD, reboot then download DVDD aqain and reinstall it OK ?
Let's check the following which you should do with some regularity at any rate.
1. Let's check for up-to-date Firmware for your burner.
"OK, so what is this "Firmware" garbage?" Fair question. Firmware is a "tutor" who's job it is to eliminate any "bugs" found in your drive and to "introduce" your burner to all the different kinds of media to your burner is likely to run into and to tell your burner a little bit about it. What type of media it is and at what speed to burn it. As new media is introduced OR, as the Mfgrs of your burner find new ways to use it, new firmware updates OR "Flash upgrades" come out to "school" your burner, keeping it up-to-date. It's good to keep your burner up-to-date as it "tweaks" your burner and keeps it operating at peak performance.
Of major Importance - When dealing firmware, you must match your burner's exact model with the proper Firmware. Trying to "Flash" your burner with something "Close" won't do it. It must be the exact firmware for your drive. ("Flashing" is what the installation is referred to when you put the firmware into your drive.) Trying to "Flash" your drive with some other drive's firmware can ruin your drive.
At the bottom of the page look for "What's my firmware? - Try this little tool I found," Download this tool and check out your Firmware's health (up-to-date wise). You can probably get a current upgrade there also -
http://flashman.rpc-1.com/
Firmware page -
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
Always check your burner's Mfgr's "Support" section to see if some newer Firmware is there -
Firmware, You can't burn without it -
Now we need to see if we have a working ASPI Layer.
"Yea right, and ASPI stands for Another Stupid Piece of Insanity, right ?" No, not quite, it stands for "Advanced SCSI Programming Interface". "Well that tells me nothing, what's it do ?" That's a much easier question to answer. It is kind of a "translator" allowing your software to talk your hardware in a manner that your hardware will understand. Let's imagine an Earthman trying to talk to a rock. Now, think of a sledgehammer as being the interface. With the interface in play, the Earthman can tell the rock to disperse into gravel no matter what planet the rock is from, OK ? Good, let's see if we have a sledgehammer -
2. Check for your ASPI Layer. If one isn't present, we'll need to get one and reinstall it, then reboot our PC to allow it to "settle in".
ASPI Checker -
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?cat=%2fProduct%2fEZ-SCSI_5.0&filekey=aspichk.exe&sess=no
Force 1.8 ASPI Layer -
http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/
Lastly, when did you last defrag your Hard Drive (HD) ? If you have to stop and think about the last time you did it, then it's way, way overdue. Here we go, (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. When it opens, choose your HD, analyses it to see where we stand then if you need it (you probably will) choose Defragment.).
After you finish doing it now you might want to think about having "Scheduled Tasks" in your Control Panel do it for you on a daily basis.
A fragmented HD not only drastically slows down your system but it can cause all number of things to happen inside your PC, a messed up burn being one of them.
Once we've done that, our DVD burner should operate at peak efficiency :D)
Cheers,
Pete
Now let's see if everything will work together the way we want it to, OK ?
Give it a test run and let us know how you make out -

I am not doing too badly with all this burning fun, Nephew is tired of answering questions but I have even found a really fun way to deal with my mistakes!
I live in an area full of drugs/crime/dealers etc. etc.
so during the nice weather I have a very large supply of five inch frisbe's to toss across the street!
Sorry retired at 42 and now I am bored at times,Nothing like a good laugh once in a while!

OK so I followed your steps bio orange. But when I hit backup and it says "select backup target." it says ISO image file and burnw ith decrypter. which should I pick? Also under select Image target I picked my burner and it said
"DVD shrink encounterd an error and cannot continue. The specified folderis invalid.
inncorect function."
So then I changed the backup target to "Hard disk folder." and under Select Target Foldeer for DVD output folders I picked my burner and got a message saying. " DVD Shrink encounterd an error and cannot continue. Failed to creat folder. Invalid function."
What am I doing wrong. I bought new blank DVD disks and still no luck.
EDIT: OK thx guys I finally figured it out!!

OK, 1st- I need to know if you're trying to burn with nero or Decrypter. If you're trying to burn with Decrypter you must uncheck enable burn with nero under edit>preferences>fileI/O. Then choose ISO file and burn with decrypter in the backup window. Also, did you choose your burner in decrypter under ISO write option before you even opened shrink?
2nd-If you're burning with Nero, then check enable burn with nero and choose your burner as your destination in the backup window. All this is listed in the guide.
3rd-you can't choose hard disc folder as destination and then choose your burner. You have told it to write to your HDD, so you must choose a folder for it's output.
4th-If you choose to burn to disc with decrypter or nero, you must choose a folder on your HDD for shrink to put it's temp files.
It sounds like you're telling it to write to the HDD and instead of choosing an output folder, you're choosing your burner or choosing ISO and burn with decrypter. This will result in the error you got.
GO VOLS !

My firmware and ASPI Layer is up to date and all. Its just a few days ago i burned a dvd with no problem i used the guide on page 2 of this thread by scubapete and it worked great. The only problem was that one of my blank dvds had a error but i just used a new one and it was okay. I did the re- author and i just cut down everything except for the movie of course. But now i tried to do a full disc and everything is going slow like before. when im encoding it goes slow.
Also you dont have to press analysis if the compression settings pull up do you?

Gee. I found the problem right off the bat. Pete, Roxio (easycd) and Nero, especially InCD WILL format a disk if you ask it to, and also if you do a full erase. What you don't seem to want to LEARN is that this is a format exclusive to the App. Even windows media player will hang when it encounters such discs.
Go ahead, give it a try. Format a dvd with Nero, and then try burning from DVD-Decryptor. Please post your error log.
When in doubt, use a hammer. When further in doubt, find a bigger hammer.

CrueGuy, congrats!
Trust me, there are plenty who swear they followed the guide step by step and the software failed to make a working copy. Only to admit later they missed or misread a step. And they didn't have Dyslexia to blame it on. Glad you got it going.
Now maybe you can hang out and help some poor fellow burner who's having his share of problems. I'd bet even your girlfriend now knows how to make a perfect backup now :>)

Just wanted to say hi and let people know what a great resource this forum is for a DVD-RW newbie like myself.
It seems like yesterday when I was fumbling around trying to burn audio CD's from MP3's...I made alot of coasters. Now I enter a new realm of VOBS and stuff.

This usually means a bad disk (scratched or dirty)
Try cleaning the disk really really good.
Try ripping the movie with the newest version of Decrypter first. Decrypter is better at handeling problem disks.

It's just another copy protection method. Decrypter will insert "dummy" sectors in place of the "bad" sectors in order to complete a functioning rip. IOW, Decrypter is doing it's job :>)

Hi all, We should have the link set now - sorry
Mattdogg,
Sorry buddy - wasn't myself for the past few days -
Slow, huh ?
Let's go to your Device manager, IDE and check our transfer to make sure it's in the DMA mode and not in the PIO mode.
If it's in the PIO mode, uninstall the drive, and reboot your PC to let your PC find the drive again and reset it to the DMA setting -
Report back, OK ?
You be da man - - -
