This worked for me as well. I converted my PAL dvd to an NTSC dvd, including all the menus and chapters.

only problem is that the links are out of order. seems as they still are PAL? is that possible?

Rick,

I use ConvertXtoDivX (that's what it's called now) when Nero fails me. I am fully aware of the loss of special features when it comes to ConvertXtoDivX. Theoretically I could just rip all the titles and re-author the disc, but that would be a pain in the ass. I'm too lazy to do that. Plus I want to retain the menu for the "cool" factor. :)

The idea was to send my friend a copy of the disc with all the special features in tact as she hasn't seen the movie in years. She loved the flick and this was my first chance to get the Special Edition only available at Amazon's UK site.

I'll probably just keep tinkering. As for her DVD player she has a crappy Toshiba player that is a few years old. I'm surprised it plays burned DVD's at all as the older Toshiba's were very anal about what they played and didn't.

GEK..Well to my thinking if it changed frm PAL 23. TO PAL 29.
Then it should be NTSC it changed to the proper frame rate just not the proper name..I'm pretty sure DVD PLAYERS GO BY FRAMES[23pal29ntsc] NOT NAMEA[pal, ntsc] for regions..Don't take this as gospel..it just sound senseable too me

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal was either. I'll try again later, but I'm not really worried about it right now.

If anybody figures it out, post it up! :)

Trying the VoBlanker, DVDshrink method one more time.

Even if it takes 4 - 5 hours, I think I'll probably stick with the
DVDFab Decrypter -> DGIndex -> TMPGEnc -> DGPullDown method, hasn't failed me yet. Sure you don't get the menus, but that's better than a bunch of coasters.

I confess to not being much of a video expert but after trying many of the suggested PAL to NTSC DVD conversion methods in this thread, I've put together one that works best for me. I thank those who have posted in this thread their results and suggestions.

1) Rip the PAL DVD to a folder (FOLDER1) on your hard drive using the latest version of Slysoft AnyDVD.
If you right-click on that little FOX icon on the desktray , an option is available that says " Rip Video-DVD to HardDisk... " Left-click on it and the AnyDVD Ripper box opens up. Fill in the source directory ( the location of your PAL DVD ) E:\VIDEO_TS Then fill in the Destination directory - FOLDER1 on your hard drive large enough to store about 5GIG of files.

2)When ripping is done, use the program VobBlanker and open up FOLDER1 containing the ripped files. Change all files video attributes of PAL to NTSC. If you encounter a situation where you can't change the video attributes, close this program and use the IFOEdit program to change PAL to NTSC.

3) Go back to VobBlanker. Enter a destination directory as a different empty folder FOLDER2 and click on PROCESS and let it run until done.

4) Go back to IFOEdit and make sure all IFO files in FOLDER2 are in NTSC . Be sure to click SAVE if any changes are done and the saved changes will overwrite the old IFO file.

5) Use Slysoft CloneDVD2 and use the middle option of CLONE DVD to locate the DVD video files of FOLDER2 and proceed to burn the DVD. Use option of Slysoft CloneDVD2 to compress and burn the video files to fit on one DVD.

So far, I've not noticed any problems or jerkiness with the final video. All menus remain intact and I haven't noticed audio out of sync.

I just joined afterdawn because of this thread. Jbfd, your method worked for me. I have been reading and beating my head trying to find a simple "free" way of converting PAL to NTSC. I have converted only one movie at this point but felt the need to shout out. I have many more to do. I will keep everyone updated as I do my conversions.

Thanks again to jbfd and everyone that is a part of Afterdawn.

I think the best one to use is DVDSanta. Converts anything to dvd. But you do loose menus when you convet PAL to NTSC.

I've searched and tried every method and found they are either too hard, don't always work or produce poor results. I FINALLY found a good solution.

The best one click solution I've found is a program called ConvertXtoDVD from a company called VSO. It converts the movie just fine but you won't get the menu's. Oh well. You don't get them with TMPEnc either and this way is MUCH easier.

Here's how to do the conversion:

When you install ConvertXtoDVD make sure to select NTSC and leave all the other options alone.

1) Rip the main movie to a folder using DVD Decrypter or FAB DVD Decrypter or something like that. If your movie is in IMG or ISO format you can mount it with Daemon Tools. Either way you should end up with 4 or 5 VOB files inside a folder representing the main movie. Each VOB except for the last one in the set is about a GB in size so you can tell which is the main movie.

2) Start up ConvertXtoDVD and put in a blank DVD 5.

3) Click File then Add Video File

4) Select the first VOB in your set of 4 or 5 that represents the main movie - ConvertX will see the entire set as part of one movie so no need to select the rest of the VOB's.

5) Click Convert

That's about it. In an hour or so you should have your brand new NTSC DVD.

If you really want to be sure it's doing something you can pause the movie under Action and then in Window you can click Video Preview.

I live in Canada and almost all DVD players here play NTSC. Only a handful of DVD players sold in this country will play PAL movies. I have a DVD player that plays both but none of my friends or family members can play PAL DVD's.

All of my movies are NTSC and I keep them that way so that when a friend wants to borrow one it will play in his machine. So if I get a movie that's in PAL format, I convert it to NTSC.

There are two formats for DVD's just like there used to be two formats for Video tape (remember VHS and Beta?). PAL is the standard used in Europe while NTSC is the format used in North America and Japan. The two formats are NOT compatible with each other. PAL has a slower frame rate (25 fps for PAL vs 30fps for NTSC) and a different aspect ratio.

Unlike video tape players, there are some DVD players that will play both formats of DVD. Those players are very common in Europe so converting from one format to another is not really an issue in Europe.

Almost all DVD's sold in Europe are PAL while almost all DVD's sold in North America are NTSC. For that reason most people will never encounter a problem playing a DVD. The only time this becomes an issue is when someone in North America gets a PAL DVD. This can happen when bargin DVD's are imported or (I hear) it can happen when a person in North America downloads a pirated PAL DVD from a European source.

When a North American person has a PAL DVD he has a choice. He can either search around and find a PAL/NTSC player or he can convert the PAL disc to NTSC format.

I have already explained why I convert my PAL DVD's to NTSC format so I won't go over that again.

Hopefully even the slow learners will now understand why SOME people would want to convert a PAL DVD to NTSC format.

Exactly. All the movies in my collection are NTSC. I convert the PAL ones to NTSC then I throw out the PAL ones.

I need to change my NTSC to PAL, wedding videos done here for the relatives back in Eurpoe.

Unfortunately ConvertXtoDVD only goes one way Darkbob. I had great success working PAL to NTSC 6 months ago too bad it does not work the other way around. I just downloaded Blaze Media Pro 15 day full feature free try out and from their web site you think, pretty pro looking. Open up the interface nice look ok lets see if the hype is there. What a dud, poor, unhelpful, useless instructions and barely any reference on how to "easily convert NTSC to PAL" I just offered them a $50.00 US reward and I offered to buy the product if they can help me convert just one NTSC videro to PAL.

Here is the reply I got from Blaze Software. Missing 2 things what is the bitrate and frame rate...I think it should be 25

I am unable to call, unfortunately, but I will try to explain. The firstthing you need to do is capture (if you have a TV tuner or video capture card) or rip (with a third-party application) from DVD to AVI, MPG, or WMV. With this AVI, MPG, or WMV video file, you add it to the software's video converter feature using the Add command from the Edit menu. Select the MPEG tab, and then MPEG-2 and DVD. You can select the Video Standard option to use from this window's File menu. Convert the file from there, and make note of the location selected for output. When the conversion is complete,
select this file in the software's Burn Video DVD feature (the MPEG-2 File
field), and click Burn. You will then be prompted for your burning options,
and proceed to burn your new disc from there. After that, the process is
complete. I hope this helps to better explain. Have a great evening.

Sincerely,

juldet..Did'nt say convertX..I said VSO DivXtoDVD..With this free little prog U can go either way. Also frm what I've seen in ConvertX its PAL or NTSC..But anyway with VSO DivXtoDVD..it allows U to force 25[PAL] or 29.97[NTSC],is this not the signifent difference.Worth a try!!
1 other thought,I would suggest U go to OfficeDepot & buy a 25pk of their RW's,till U resolve your problem.I learned my lesson the hardway, especially when converting frm 1format to another

I have found that DVD Shrink works the best for converting PAL dvds to NTSC dvds. All you need to do is turn off the region codes and you are set to go. I have used Nero to burn, and have never had a problem.
