I have found if you convert a PAL to NTSC, with Vobblanker or DivXtoDVD, still some DVD players have problems with playback.

I have 3 DVD players at the house, two playback with green lines in the video while the cheapest player I have, a $49.00 Walmart Sony, plays everything with no problems.

Well if this helps anyone here's some useful information on video encoding in general.
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/ which is the better of the two in my opinion.
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/working_with_dvd.pdf which shows step by step how to make some changes including letterboxing and simple avisynth code

Hello guyz.

I tried the DVDSanta method (full retail version) to convert one of my PAL DVD to NTSC DVD so i can watch it on my PS2 without problem..
The DVD i tried to convert is the European version of Married....With a children (funny tv show similar to Friends or That 70's Show)..anyway...i ripped the dvd file from the iso (that i made before with dvd decrypter) to my PC..i launched DVDSanta, selected the first option from the left (video files (avi,DivX i think)) then add files..then i added all the ripped dvd files (the one with the ifo and VOB files, total size is around 4.36Gb)..then i selected NTSC, high resolution and aspect to 4:3.then i click create dvd...take about 5-6 hours to convert the whole thing...when its done ask me to burn it to dvd...i do it at slow speed (1-2x)..when the burning is done, i put the disc in my ps2...the dvd load fine...and the video plays fine in full color and sound...except i have no menu at all (with the chapter selection, etc, u know what i mean, i cant change the subtitle and the language)..it goes directly to the first chapter, when it ends goes to the 2nd and so on)...but if i mount the iso with deamon tools, then play the virtual dvd with powerdvd, everything is here no problem at all....can somebody tell my why i dont have the menu, subs and language in my converted dvd??
maybe dvdsanta is not the best solution?? Can somebody help me??

Hello to all,
Did I missed it, or it has never been mentioned? I did not see any link to VOBBlanker. Could you provide it, please? Is there any program which identifies if CDs or DVDs are recorded in PAL or NTSC?
Thank you in advance. I have found tons of great information on this forum.

Hey look. I have tried DVD Santa and VOBBlanker and they get me no-where fast. I will not mention the dozen or so other converter programs that failed at some point along the way. I have begun to think no SW out can perform the job. The only times I have converted is by days of converting from one form to another and back again. I usually end up with a video file too large to make one a movie unless I split the thing into 2 video files to be put on 2 DVD-R disks. When I get a good video file I can use like I wish, I have no sound. I have found re-merging sound is a job claimed but canot really be done. I am a novice here but my knowledge is good in other places. Why make me work so hard for nothing like these programs do?

Hello again,
I have just tried SantaDVD and have got the same thing - large file, no sound. When I tried Nero, the picture quality was good, but the sound from 6-channel switched to 2. AND in the final DVD I was not able to SKIP sections, the fastest way was to use 2x, 4x, 6x, and 8x. Not what I expect from DVD. Is it a normal thing or there is a better way to use Nero?

Hello Nosredneh..U don't mention what U are converting from or to what..Sound like U have D/L some trash movies..me personaly,I have had very few problems with any movies.my biggest problem being Dissapointment with some of the low quality vids I've converted, or every once in a while not having the whole movie.I have used A to Z..When it comes to converters..on a rare ocassion win AVI converter will make a movie a little larger then what fit on a 4.3 Disc..but then i use DVD Shrink or clone dvd to correct this problem..not to be insulting..it just sounds like U don't quite know what U are doing just yet..if this be the case just keep on truckin..you will get their

Hello Rick,
What do you think about my experience with Nero? Good video, at least on my 20" TV and on the PC monitor, but the sound went down to 2 channels, and the fast forward option or whatever it is called is missing. Very inconvenient.

WELL yromashin..U might try a diff program, something that has audio enhancement..All PROGRAMS I've used to convert to DVD only have 2 ch audio.Although some AVI's & DVD's I've D/L have 5.1 audio,as far as chapters go TMPG DVD16 lets me add as many as i want up to 99 per Disc,i usualy set Ch at 2mins.I don't know about your fastforward..as my DVD players control this.I've got 1 thats 32x & 1 that is only 8x.All my [Divx,XviD,Avi]only FF at 8x.All my mpegs,VOB's[DVD]are speed of individual player..sorry PAL thats about all i know.to my knowledge no program controls the FF..ch's & audio yes

rick5446 this section was about going from PAL to NTSC is why I omitted the from PAL and the to NTSC. I am going from DVD format in PAL to any other format possible with sound but hopely to NTSC in the end. Plain PAL on a DVD already ripped and playing perfect on my computer but not playing well on a DVD player. I need a simple 'do it' program or some complex instructions to use with these other programs that fail me where other individuals say they work. I have my doubts.

I have tried DIVXtodvd2 also. I want to go from PAL DVD format to maybe a good AVI (if necessary) and then to NTSC DVD and still hold the size to 4.3 gigs (compressed by whatever program I wish to use.) I have had some success but not complete. Getting from PAL to something is the problem. Now understand, I can do the conversion but when played on my DVD player on a standard BIG SCREEN NTSC TV I get warping or a colorless wash. That was about 20 tries ago.

Thanks for the info on GoDVD 2. However, the idea is knowledge and experience as well as results. I never am satisfied when I cannot acomplish what I want. It's a challenge to grow by. These guys who are giving instruction on video conversion are great. Thank you all very much. You become my teachers. I shed more of my ignorance thereby. Anyway, It is interesting to know that GoDVD 2 is out there.

Hi, rick5446. I have but some how that did not work. Maybe I used a file that was not exactly what was compatible. I may have used a file that I had converted and wanted to do a merge to induce the sound back into the equation. Well at any rate, I will think it over and make a new stab. Question is, Does Main Conceipt recognize DVD format (VOB) direcly like VOB Blanker and some of the other converters.

Hello again..Nosredneh..I don't really know, the only thing i use MainConcept H264 for is in the DVD mood to make compatible Mpegs [pal to ntsc] when the movie is to small this is great for stretching back to a decent size, some files are so small on my 60in TV look better after converted back to 720x480 ..then use TMPG DVD16 TO CONVERT to DVD Disc

@nosredneh
hopefully this guide will be exact enough and correct enough :) for you to get some decent results.
programs you will need:
1.a dvd ripper (anything to get those vob's i'll use dvddecryptor)
2.avisynth (i think i'm using ver 2.55) you can get the latest here: http://www.avisynth.org/
3.some avisynth plugins namely the decomb plugin http://www.neuron2.net/ and the mpeg2dec plugin link at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53164
4.dvd2avi let's go ver 1.76 (others probably work)
5.mpeg2 encoding prog (i'm going to use tmpgenc)
6.dvd authoring program (ifoedit?)
(optional) 7. beSweet (audio converter proggy found here: http://dspguru.doom9.net/)

first things first install everything, put the avisynth plugins in any folder you like, i try to avoid the avisynth plugin folder as the plugins will automatically be loaded and that can cause some trouble for other plugins.
rip the vobs off of your dvd. Load dvdDecryptor select file under the mode menu. Select the vobs you wish to rip and put them somewhere on your harddrive.
Now we'll have to use dvd2avi to create a project file of those vobs. Load up dvd2avi and choose open under the file menu. Choose the vobs you want and click ok. You can look to make sure everything is to your liking they should be in order. Under the audio menu you can choose how you want to output your audio if you want to at all. The audio will be another file created once you save the project, if you would like to keep your ac3 it wouldn't be a bad idea to demux ac3. When you settle on your audio output choose save project under the file menu choose your directory. this will create a .d2v file and possibly an audio file.
To use avisynth create a textpad document and change the .txt extension to .avs . Inside the avs write a script like this:

LoadPlugin("c:\where\the\plugin\is\pluginname.dll")
mpeg2source("c:\where the d2v is\whatever.d2v")
Telecide(order=1,guide=2) this will create progressive film
#convertfps(29.97) #changefps(29.97) the "#" make comments

with that code understand you'll actually have two loadplugin lines one for decomb and one for mpeg2dec. Also in the third line note that expects the field order to be top field first. To learn a bit more either go to the first link in my post earlier this thread or this link if it isn't working the links help http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/videogetb3a.html#mo...
Save the script and load up your mpeg2 encoding program or look at the resulting file with virualdub. With tmpgenc browse for the avs file under video source (have to make it look at *.* files). Make sure to click ES video only (as you have probably already got your audio from avi2dvd). load that up and go to settings. Make sure your stream type is mpeg2. Your framerate should be 23.976 unless you removed one of the comments in the avs script. At this point you have a number of options to make your video playback at 29.97 fps.

1. under frame rate you can have 23.976 playback at 29.97 (keeps your progressive footage and makes the player process 3:2 pulldown)
2. under advanced tab you can check 3:2 pulldown to create 29.97 fps
3. remove either comment (but not both) in the avs script.
I would reccomend using either option 1 or 3 but if you want the videos themselves to be 29.97 I would reccomend option 3. This is where my knowledge is fuzzy as I don't know which is better, convertfps or changefps experiment and find out :). To get a decent size video file you can use some bitrate calculator somewhere or just mess around until you find a decent enough quality for the size you're looking for. change the dc precision to 10 and the motion search precision to very slow. Let er` rip (this will take awhile). You'll end up with an m2v file which should be accepted by your dvd authoring proggy.

Now the audio:
Load besweet. Take your current audio and if it's not a wav already convert it to wav. Now convert from wav to ac3 and make sure to check under OTA options the change frame rate and set from at 25000 and to at 23976. create your ac3. You'll notice slight quality degregation as a conversion has occured but it should be in sync with the new video now.

Plug the new video file and the new audio together and you got yourself a dvd.
*Note I didn't take into account any aspect ratio changes or anything like that.
Hopefully that was informative and helpful

booboo84,
Everything looks good. I have seen most of waht you have detailed but not put so concisely. I have basically downloaded everything you listed. Some programs and plugins I have had a while but never fould ways to use them. You can see I was a dummy at using those programs. I will give her a try Thanksgiving week. I am going to build a computer that week (a few minutes work only) from spare parts while I'm on vacation. I don't know what I'll do with 10 computer though.
Thanks for the info and guide.

do you know if your method carries over the subtitles feature on an original PAL?

You could always send one this way ;)

@nocompute
you can rip the subtitles out of the original dvd as a seperate file then insert them with some subtitle program...i haven't done anything with subs yet so i can't provide much more info then that. Subs on a dvd are stored seperate from the video file unlike avi's. but the answer...yes you can get your subs. that will probably involve either making an intermediate avi instead of just plugging the avs file into the dvd encoder proggy or putting the subs file into your dvd authoring program somewhere. avisynth might have something to incorporate subs into the video stream itself, but you'll have to read up to find out.
