I still may give your method a go but the method I found took 2 steps or 2 different programs and very little configuration by hand.

ooo I just read my guide and I think that would add some audio offset. I don't really handle PAL so I forget these things. changes have been made to the guide to correct the audio.
@ nosredneh
whatever works for ya :) hopefully that'll get the menu's too but i know nothing about moviejack.

I have been doing like the rest of you, searching the net and trying to find a simple way to convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD. Knowing very little about the differences between the two I thought there should be an easy solution. I tried the simplest solution first: rip with DVD decryptor and then use Vobblanker to change the PAL VOB files to NTSC (I thought) Then I found in the Voblanker helpfile "Modifying the video attributes in the dialog, the user is allowed to change the video attributes in the IFO files (both copies), but NOT in the VOB files" Anyway it didn't work for me. I do think Vobblanker is a great little program for shrinking a DVD and keeping the menus. Using an AVIsynth script works, I am sure, but is way to complex for me. There are expensive programs ($200 range) like DVFilm Atlantis that will brobably do a very high quality conversion, but still the procedure is long and complex. I did discover a fairly simple procedure that used software I already had (sorry not all free) that produces very acceptable results with no obvious lose of video quality, smooth playback and synchronized sound. There must be some quality lose though since on the movie I tried, the VOB files were shrunk from about 2.4 gig to 1.7 gig. Anyway the results were good enough for me.
1.Rip with DVD Decryptor
2.Convert to DivX, the highest quality conversion you can, I used Dr. DivX.
3. Convert back to DVD with Divix to DVD convertor, checking the forcing standard to NTSC box. I use the version of DIVD to DVD included in Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5
4. Either burn directly to DVD with whatever program you use (no menus) or use some DVD authoring program to create new menus. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6
The resulting DVD plays great on the 3 stand alone DVD players I tried it on.

Hi there,
I didn?t read the whole forum, but I have an answer for the conversion of PAL/NTSC to NTSC/PAL. and this will do the menus for you as well.
First run Voblanker, and select the input DVD. It will show you the Video Format, "right click" and select Video Attrib. now select the correct format you want NTSC or PAL.
Do this for all the VOB files you want to convert, then select a new output folder and click PROCESS!
This only changes the VOB format not the menu yet.
Once the process is done, open IFOEdit and open the video_ts.ifo files from your new output folder.
On the first page it opens you will see in the bottom bigger window that the format is still NTSC (if that was the original DVD) but the rest will say PAL or vice versa.
"Double Click" the lines that have the wrong format for you and select the right format PAL/NTSC. Save the file.
Now open each ifo file and do the same saving each one.
Now burn using your favourite burning software and now the menus and the movie and even the extras are all in the right colour format for you.

Do not forget, there are a few other options but Blanker to do the job.
I like NERO (paid0 and VSODivxToDVD (free).

Wait a minute! Anyone can find a good simple program to go from divx or files like .AVI, .MPG, .MOV, and even .WMV to NTSC. Nero works well with .MP4 and maybe a few other type video files. What the problem happens to be is finding a good program to go from PAL movie .VOB to NTSC movie .VOB in one sweep. I found recently that Dr. Divx will make a good converson to .AVI from PAL movie .VOB and then a good burner {NERO or ROXIO etc) will burn this back as an NTSC DVD. I hoped to use VOB Blanker but never got the hang of it wasting many 4.7 gig disks. I finally had someone somewhere in this forum that may have expalined it. Until then get Dr. Divx to convert the main movie to .AVI. You can also convert all the other .VOBs but you have to worry then about putting a menu together that makes them all work from the same disk. And if NERO will convert PAL .VOB (the whole movie of such), I have not learned it. Tell me how.

@ Nosredneh We gettin a little off subject here I think it was about puttin multiple AVI'S on 1 DVD & DVD'S with AVI's not working.Just hope I was of help in that area
But I use VSO DivX to DVD quite a lot TO CONVERT AVI's to DVD, although it does not give U a menu persay,But it will set your DVD up in segments so U can go to the begining of ea movie on your DVD useing the goto or the display on your DVD Player..I especially like it for TV Series like ROME etc I get 4 episodes on ea disc by converting 4 AVI's at once DivX to DVD Gives me a Sstart point for EA EPISODE & the time segment is right for ea ep also

I understood this to be a PAL to NTSC. On that subject, I found conversion elusive almost. I did it once but carelessly lost the method because I didn't realize I had done just that. Recently I found the answer that works very well for me. Use Dr. DivX to convert to .AVI and then Nero or ROXIO to burn the .AVI to DVD. (By the way, I have finally been won of by Nero.) This gives excellent results that looks like the original PAL. You must make sure the Burners are set to NTSC. So! On the subject of multi files (.AVI) on one disk, what is a good way to do this and have a menu and still keep these files all as separate as they originally were? I know Nero has a multi file feature but I have never tried it.

@ Nosredneh..VSO DivxtoDVD..Will do the same 4.3 16.9 pal to ntsc,ntsc to pal,and at a ratio of about 1 to 1.5 its really pretty fast usually about an hr for an hr & half movie,chapters every 5mins.I've put pal DVD Movies as well as AVI'S through it.I have'nt run across anything to date that it would'nt convert.when all else fails me I'm right back at this

I have read that the method you outlined works. It doesn't I tried it and got the same results as the last time I tried the method when I had no instructions. The problem still seems to be that when converting from PAL to NTSC has completed as your instructions go and using Ifoedit0.971 again to check the results, the playback feature is still set to 25 fps. This is found under VTS_PGCITI sub-heading VTS_PGC_1 and each other numbered VTS_PGC_X. I used dgpulldown but only a few of the 25 fps were converted to 30 fps in the menu frames but none in the main movie were converted. I need a way to change the 25 fps to 29.97 fps throughout the converted DVD.

ok am not to sure what you are doing, but you can drop out useing Voblanker.
Just rip the dvd, menus and all, and open up EACH Ifo file with IFOEdit. on the First page that appears, look for anything that says NTSC (or PAL, depending on which way you want to convert).
ONLY the first page that opens is where you need to change the colour format. (Trust me, you dont need to worry about thr fps, it makes no differece at all same applies with the frame ratio it still plays just fine)
EDIT ALL IFO FILES!!!!!! or you will end up with some things in the wrong colour format. and edit EVERYTHING IN THE FIRST PAGE ONLY.
I cannot stress enough the above statement, i have done this with CSI and 24, and with normal movies, and if i can do it with DVD's that is a series like 24 and CSI then this IS a full proof system, and if you edit ALL ifo files, then you get the menus converted too.
REMEMBER TO SAVE EACH FILE
once all this is done, DONT look at the ifo's again..... even if you play back just a single VOB file and look at the properties it will say it is the original colour format but dont worry about this, it is the ifo file that tells the dvd player how to play the dvd.
use your favourite dvd compresser software eg DVD Shrink and then burn the disc.
This editing of the ifo files can be done before or after the dvd has been shrunk to 4.7gb .
Hope you try this again and i will try and get screen shoots if you want up on the forum soon.

Ok! How do you edit the colors? What values do you use? By the way, I went back into the IFOEdit and after trial and error I was able to change the values that indicated 25 fps to read 30 fps. I changed the time values from 82 to 192. One area I change 4702 to 4800. Whether or not this will help, I don't know. I considered a color format change but was not sure about the values. What I have when I have played the converted VOBS is a B&W form of the DVD NTSC or PAL. At the bottom of the screen, there is a narrow hazy rainbow colored line that seems to be enfolding itself. Since PAL reads lines at the top and bottom of the screen that NTSC does not. That may be the reason for the effect. Anyway, if there is a solution I would like to see it. I have some good quality PAL disks that need direct conversion.

I have found if you convert a PAL to NTSC, with Vobblanker or DivXtoDVD, still some DVD players have problems with playback.
I have 3 DVD players at the house, two playback with green lines in the video while the cheapest player I have, a $49.00 Walmart Sony, plays everything with no problems.

I agree. VSODivXtoDVD does a good job and it is fast. I also like Nero, for it gives more control. However, it is not free. Nero allows two passes. Whether it makes any difference, can not tell yet.
I am happy with Philips DVP642/37. It never skips when others do, plays almost everything (CDs) I put in. And I have no need to convert PAL to NTSC, for it plays both.

Thanks so much to Sadsac.
I have an old PAL only TV, but my DVD player plays both NTSC and PAL.
My NTSC discs played in black and white and jumped around alot.
Just used VOB Blanker and the instructions given here and it has worked perfectly.
Saves me buying a new TV!
I had 8 tv episodes on 1 disc and Nero would only covert 2 to fit on a disc but this method copied all 8 to 1 standard DVD disc.
Really grateful to Sadsac for posting this solution with easy to follow instructions

Your VOB Blanker instructions worked for me! Wooohooo! I had to click on "Execute" under "File" (instead of clicking on "Process") in order for the conversion to start, but that was the only deviation from your instructions. The only noticeable difference in quality of the converted DVD was with the warning/copy right at the very beginning ? a little quivering/wavy ? and to that I say, ?Who the f#$%k cares?!? :D Most of us delete that out anyway. The rest of the DVD was perfect. The sound, the menus, everything! I can *finally* enjoy my Contender (region 2 PAL) Farscape DVDs on my plain ?ol TV-top (region 1 NTSC) DVD player and TV. I can?t thank you enough, really. :)
I?ve been searching on and off for I don?t know how long trying to find a ?quick and dirty? way to change PAL DVDs to NTSC DVDs to no avail. Everything was either waaaaay too complicated or waaaaay too expensive ? or both! I kept thinking, ?Come on! There has got to be something that employs the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule with this.? Finally!!! Halleluiah!

Oh yeah! Just in case it's helpful to any one, or people are just curious about the combo of applications I used, I used VOB Blanker with AnyDVD (to decrypt), DVD Shrink (to compress the files), and CopytoDVD (to burn the converted files to DVD). I have a HP Pavilion Desk Top computer that I bought about a year ago. The whole conversion process only took about 15-20 minutes and most of that was from the burning time of the finished product.

I am looking for a way to do this as well, although it will be a while before I get around to it. In the meantime, there is a Genesis film that was meticulously transferred from film into PAL (since the original 16mm film was 25fps). The guy that did it also converted it to NTSC. Here's what he says he did:

Because many people cannot use PAL DVDs, I thought it would be best to create an NTSC version too. This will have slightly lower quality at 720x480 and a converted frame rate of about 30 frames per second, but using the source video transfer will get the best possible result, much better than converting the PAL DVD later and ompressing twice.
Converting from 25 to 30 frames per second is not easy. Most ardware and software that simply duplicate frames make very stuttery video. So for the PAL -> NTSC transfer I used Canopus ProCoder. This is a highly respected transfer program that converts the frame rate, blends frames when necessary, and creates very smooth running film.
However, my personal opinion is that the MPEG-2 tools in ProCoder alter the source too much so I again sent the lossless result from ProCoder over to TMPGEnc for DVD compression at 8000 MBPS.

It appears that the Pro version is the one that will do the conversion, and you can't buy it from them online. The Express version is only $60, so hopefully the Pro isn't that much more expensive. There is a free trial, though.
If/when I get around to this I'll let you know how it works, but you can see from the info on transferring the Genesis film that this guy is pretty meticulous.

Why not to try NERO7 Ultra? At least it is cheaper (around S59 Canadian on sale)? I have never used it to convert PAL-DVD to NTSC-DVD. I am sure it is simpe. But I have never had a problem with converting PAL-AVI to NTSC-DVD. Good and reliable result.
