crowy,

Good move on the brace. I imagine over time all that weight would put a permanent bow in the MB since it way exceeds the manufacturer's standard for side loading weight on any motherboard I know of. Picture trying to hold it by the edges with just your fingertips and you'll get the general idea. Just make sure no one accidently bumps against it cause that ugly snap you'll hear will be followed by the purchase of a new MB. I used to know all the formulas for side loads, verticle sheer and others because of the need for it in my job. I just can't think of them right now and I'm too lazy to go digging for them. Since that's the heaviest cooler I've ever heard of, I guess it poses the most risk if it gets knocked!

BTW Sophocles has his D805 on an Asus P5P800-SE MB and he's already up to 3.8GHz on air cooling with the 9500 and the temps don't break 40C. I forget who built the other one but he's stuck at 3.3 because the MB he chose doesn't give him enough adjustments to allow him to go any further. Since I'm getting the same MB, it looks real good for my D940 build next week!

My Socket A board has bowed slightly even with the use of a compact cooler such as the Arctic Copper Silent2l, so you can expect issues with a cooler that size.

You can't argue with 3.3 over 2.66, thats still a 23.75% overclock. If you were to achieve the same with your D940, you could get up to 3.96Ghz.

Well I guess we is gonna have to put it through it's paces and see what it can do. The D940 while faster than the D930, is not the top CPU in that series. That honor belongs to the D960 at 3.6GKz. I'm 2 below the top at 3.2 so I should have decent headroom, and with a quality Asus P5P800-SE MB and high quality memory it should rock!. I'm setting my sights on 3.7 to 3.8GHz!!! A minus to this MB is no SATA, but the CPU, voltage and memory adjustments are much better than any of the boards with SATA. I don't have SATA drives but I do have SATA connectors on my old MB so I won't be missing anything. This set-up has mostly all of the bells and whistles found on the newest MBs so it is very adjustable. I'm looking forward to the fun!!!

You know what! I've had it with this thread. There are 18 contributers to it including myself. It's time I unsubscribe and just drop in every once in a while like some others do, or when the mood strikes be. Ya'all know where to find me!!!

Japan wants to reclaim the processing laurels from the US with a supercomputer 75 times faster than today's champion

Government officials in Japan said on Monday that they are planning to build the world's fastest supercomputer, according to a report in The Japan Times on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology expects to complete the system by 2010, when it will run at a maximum speed of 10 petaflops ? 10 quadrillion floating-point operations a second. The current record holder is the IBM supercomputer Blue Gene/L, which at 137 teraflops is around seventy times slower.

Wow, interesting stuff. Nice to know they licensed it. I wonder when we're going to start seeing the real implications of that.

ATI are currently saying they don't intend to make quad crossfire as there's no market for it.

I had the same issues when using TM PC-Cillin 2005 with IE. I switched to FireFox about a week ago, and will not be going back. With Adblock, you rarely see any banner adds. I don't get the this page not shown stuff either.

crowy,

Thanks for the heatpipe diagrams. Both my CPU (Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro) and GPU (Arctic Cooling Accelero X1) heatsinks use them and I never really stopped to wonder how they work :)

Nephilim, which way round do you have your Freezer 64 Pro facing? I'm trying to decipher which way round it's going to end up, I've seen every which way in reviews of it in system builds.

@sammorris,
Depends on your board?
Point any airflow to the most beneficial area of your mainboard.
IE:dont blow any of the exhausted air from your cpu cooler straight out of your case. The more circulation of air inside your case the better.
Especially if your room temperature is lower than your average cpu temp.
I have 3 fans, 1x12cm top of case, and 2x9cm fans in each side of the case all sucking air into the case as the room temp is around 10 degrees celcius here.

Hmmm, it already has fins to blow air over the power regulators. I suppose I want it blowing in the direction of the memory and things like that, so I want it facing sideways.
The board's going to be an A8N-SLi SE

Tbh I don't think it'd be heat stopping you from getting that chip to 3Ghz. As long as you're not using the stock cooler, you'll be fine for anything with an X2, it's a question of memory, mainboard, and voltage tweaking.

As expected. Value Select? That can do 20%, then after that yes, you may want XMS PC4000.
