Hi Chunkhead

Complete noob to modding. I have successfully modded my xbox using the hotswap trick and it is working like a dream. I am trying to upgrade though to a new maxtor 60gig hdd. I have followed your tutorial and have have got to the point where I need to lock the hdd but using linux it says "error - this drive has security enabled - disable first".

I can lock the hdd using the dos tools but when I place it in the xbox I get error 06. I have read on other forums that this is a lockin/unlocking error and have also read that dos is not reccomended for locking the hdd. Any ideas on my problem or how to disable security? Your help would be greatfully appreciated.

Hey there

Maxtors are known to have locking problems..

Try to stick with Seagate or Western Digital hdd's..

Security errors like the one you mentioned mean that the HDD is already locked! If you hotswapped, the hotswap wasn't successful and the drive is still locked!

Error 6 means that you have used the wrong eeprom. When you say DOS tools, did you type the code or use an eeprom. If you typed a code, you may have permanently bricked your HDD!

Right,

Got one of the 4/5 eeprom's I found from around my XBOX. Checked the first one and it matched the Serial Number on the bottom of my XBOX. Used eeprom and put it in the EEPROM folder in xboxhdm. Used the fresh dashboard files from the link provided and successfully built a new HDD from scratch and locked it.

Swapped the HD's over in the XBOX and booted up with no game in. After minutes of waiting at the start-up screen (where the WHITE Microsoft logo is displayed), without a Microsoft logo for the most of it, and went into Error 13.

Shutdown the XBOX and booted up with a disk in (Splinter Cell, the one I originally used to softmod ;)). Again same as last time but this time Error 21.

I've googled around I've concluded that it's something to do with corrupted dashboard files?

So my question is, should I go about 'clearing' these errors? Many guides on fixing these errors assume you're using the original XBOX HD and I don't want to mess [the new 500GB one] up. So can anyone recommends the best way?

Thanks!

use the aid disk ti install the soft mod ... put the disk in before the the machine is on then turn off then back on ... the machine will boot once with out the epprom backed up .... ok lemme restart here ! use xboxhdm and use the mahack xbox softmod files ... then once u get that on the drive back up eeprom u dont need to back it up to the pc yet ... once your running the fist soft mod change the seeting to auto detect dvd , game , data and audio ... the use the aid disk .... it will boot from the start up , back up the eeprom and then u can choose what dash u want .... after all is done then go looking for the eeprom

I know about the Maxtor drives audogstar. I do have a Seagate and a WD drive but both are in my PC and being used already. They are both mass storage drives and are a bit overkill for what I want to do with my Xbox. The Maxtor drive was just lying around and 60gig is just about right.

If anyone has overcome this locking/unlocking problem with Maxtor drives please let me know as I do not wish to buy another HDD just for my Xbox.

Chunkhead, when I meant I hotswapped I mean I did it with the original Xbox HDD, this is working fine. The Maxtor drive could not have been locked already as I surely would not have been able to copy files to it during the first part of the upgrade procedure? The EEPROM I have was copied over using unleashX dashboard. Is it only the eeprom.bin file I need or are there any other files or do I have to rename the eeprom?

I only used DOS tools on my XBOXHDM to lock the HDD as linux would not do it. Incidentally I have managed to successfully lock a 20gig samsung drive (with the same EEPROM) but when I put it in my Xbox it just hangs on the big X after the Microsoft sign appears, no error 06 which means I must have the right EEPROM, right? I am guessing I just messed up somewhere with this drive and that's why its hanging.

Any ideas on what to do?

If security is enabled on the drive, it means it's locked! What happens when you put that drive into your Xbox now?

The Maxtor? It is giving me the error 06 when I put it into the xbox. But like I said if it is already locked (security enabled) then how did I mount the C and E folders to it using XBOXHDM? When the drive is locked, XBOXHDM tells you it is locked and will disable the options to do anything to the drive.

I used the same EEPROM file on the Samsung drive and I get no error 06 message from the Xbox, it just hangs, and I presume this is due to an error I have made probably with the dash files I have copied over.

I did not make my CD using your files though and, as you said, you don't know the outcome of using others. That fair enough. I have now downloaded yours and I am going to try again with both drives using clean Xbox dash.

Just want to know if all maxtor drives are not useable or if you know of anyone who has got theirs working? I really want to use this maxtor drive.

Ok, I think your right Chunkhead, I spazzed out the Maxtor drive and I'm a bit pissed about that lol.

Managed to upgrade using the Samsung drive, I put clean xbox dash files on there and then hotswapped and it's now got evox on it. The drive is really slow though and sometimes when I put emulators on it they are not recognised in the evox dashboard. I have reverted back to the original xbox hdd for now.

Is there anyway of getting back my Maxtor drive?

As long as the Maxtor isn't locked, you should be able to format it as a PC drive!

;)

Always stick with Seagate or WD!

Thank you chunkhead! Your tutorials are the best. You helped me recover completely from a botched rebuild!

I have 1 problem however. Sometimes when I boot into the m$ dash, I get very loud pop followed by static from the speakers as if some sound file is being corrupted. Everything else works fine. As far as I can tell it's the background music that is being munged as I can still hear the beeps when I scroll through the menu options underneath all of the fuzz.

Never heard that before the new drive build, so I'm thinking something is fouled.

Thoughts?
Thanks!

Yeah, probably just corrupt sounds files. I've heard of it happening before! Either put up with it (who uses the MS Dash anyway) or completely replace the dash with a clean one via FTP!

;)

well ive just destroyed my new 120gb hdd.
following the tutorial
is there anyway of making the tutorial safer and more clearer please
this is what needs changing

Quote:
USING XBOXHDM v1.9

* Shutdown your PC, unplug the computers HDDs, leaving only the cD-Rom connected. The CD-Rom should be on the 'Secondary cable' (The other cable).

* Power on the computer with the CD we created in the drive. If your BIOS is setup to boot from a CD, you should be greeted with this screen.
* Connect the HDD you wish to format to the 'Primary Master' IDE cable. (Don't forget to give it power) Allow a minute for the drive to be recognised.

* Press "1" and then Type 'xboxhd'

upon booting up the pc with the iso file on the cd

surely you should say to connect the hdd to power before booting up

is this not the case?

you should connect power first to the drive before turning the PC on, yes. However, I have connected power to drives in the past when the pc was already on and while it usually fouls something up like shutting down the power supply, it never scrambled a drive.

Sounds like the power supply might have cooked itself. You can replace fuses in them, but they are usually soldered in. Do you have another machine to try? I can believe the supply, but I still doubt the drive itself is dead.

Press 8 to quit.

If you need to lock the drive (if you don't have a MODCHIP) then re-start again but where you pressed 1 last time - press 3 then type 'lockhd -a'.
