I'm listening to Rubber Soul - Beatles. I'm in an "oldies" mood today and I always liked that album as it was so "different" from their other material.

Wow, talk about some serious OCD... Lol, jk. I know how some sounds can really bug the crap out of someone, including me, although computer fan noise doesn't really do that to me. I do have an idea though. You could try to take an old shampoo bottle- or some other plastic cylinder- and drill a lot of holes all around it. Then, fill it with foam and cut a hole in the end so that you can fit and seal it onto/over the fan vent. The foam should theoretically dull the noise but still allow the air flow, plus it helps filter the dust and stuff out of the air going into and out of the computer. You could also use a dome type form of plastic too... whatever works.
EDIT- Oh ya, and 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite

The average dust filter dramatically lowers airflow, and actually increases noise a bit, so if it's anything like that I think I'll pass.

Cheap Trick - Dream Police
A song pretty much tailor made for the voices in my head.
"Every single night they're driving me insane.
Those men inside my brain.
I try to sleep, they're wide awake, they wont leave me alone.
They don't get paid to take vacations, or let me alone."

Chevelle - The Red
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of a silencer. A silencer is essentially a smaller tube a little bigger then the projectile with some sort of foam or other substance that will allow air and sound to be compressed in it with an outer casing over that. The inner tube has holes all around it for the air to be forced through into the foam that dulls the noise. The projectile is moving slow enough that the air and gases carrying the sound waves are forced into the foam. I was meaning something like that except that that is would by a one ended tube with foam around it. This is just a theory, or hypothesis for that matter, that I have that is untested as I'm too lazy to try...
Now its Green Day - Holiday and I can play the solo :P
EDIT- Obviously, there is no projectile... I was meaning just a one ended silencer type thing that forces the air to go through foam to try to dull the fan noise.

"CHEVELLE" Point #1...
@WierdName
Good Musical Choice...
Instead of a Silencer...You should think Muffler...Internal Panel at certain angles that Cancel the Sound Waves without Restricting Air Flow...Think Flowmaster...

Didn't see your post before posting mine. Weird... Anyways, interesting thought. A mini-muffler would work pretty good but the question is the difficulty in fabricating one. That has actually given me an idea. Have a unit that sits on top of the computer and it would server as the sole air cooling and entrance/exit for the air. The main computer case would only have two holes, one on the top back and the other on the top front, which would connect to the unit. The unit could have a free-on (or whatever it is) filled cooling element out of an old fridge that would cool. The unit would also have two fans, one over each hole, that would circulate the air over the cooling element and through the computer. The unit would then be completely cut off from the outside so that the sound from the fans would have to go through the unit walls and/or computer walls in order to escape.
