The second sentence of the guide answers this question.

2.I did the HBC installation part but stopped after backing up my NAND because I was fearful of bricking my machine. Do I just follow the entire guide from start to finish, because some of the steps seem redundant if you don't know what you are doing (such as downgrading IOS15 and then restoring it 1 step later).
Thats how guides usually work. Follow the entire guide from start to finish up to the optional section. Do not skip a step (why I need to say that is beyond me).

3.I did backup my NAND, but was not able to do the Boot2 install. I had to do the Bootmii as IOS. If I DO brick my wii, is there a way to restore the NAND with Bootmii as IOS?
This has been discussed a few times through the guide. As well there has been talk in past post about an alternative safety application (cough cough Priiloader) that can be installed after softmodding your system to protect from a brick.

Hi

I just realised that I had softmodded my 4.2 Wii using the old 4.2 softmod guide (just before the Larry Guide was published).

All works well except Mario Kart (I get black screen whenever I run it - tried 2 versions which I know work on a hard modded Wii).

I noticed that I did not perform the DOP-IOS part of the new guide. Can I do it safely (I have a nand B/U just in case). Maybe it will help with Mario Kart??

thanks

Just a quick post to say thank you larrylje, I have now done two 'black' Wii's which were both 4.2 firmware and have both worked great using the USB loader, thanks for your time.

HI,

Thanks for the great tutorial. Very quick questions:

I have a black 4.2e wii. Will I be able to run my backup games from DVD or will I need to use the USB option?

Why isn't it required to install DVDx?

Thanks!

Kev

Could be a backup disc issue. have you tried another game?

How about reading the numerous other post about black Wii Sytems.

DVDx is for playing DVD's so I have left that out. This is strictly on how to get your backup games working.

Hi All!
This is my second post and is just to say: larrylje, I did all the steps double checking each step on both this guide and "Configurable USB Loader using FAT32 Partition" guide.
At the end of the steps I was able to play games from a 4 Gb usb stick.
So guys, the trick is read and follow CAREFULLY the guide the result is 100% OK and w/o problems, the guide is PERFECT and now I understand why larrylje sometimes over react and keep repeating that all is in the guide.
larrylje: thank you again, my daughter is now happy :)
I will now do the last step, the PRIILOADER.
I finish with a suggestion to everybody.
Before starting... read all the pages of this 3d, it answers any possible question you may have thus making the process easy because you will know what to do in case for a reason or another you have any doubt on the steps of the guide. I took over 2 hours but now everything is cristal clear for me.

Great job creating this guide. Softmodding my V4.2U worked great after following all the directions.

I'm encountering a problem when I try to play backup games from either a DVD or the USB drive. The games play, but have a strobe like effect (the visuals are out of sync).

Did I do something wrong in the softmodding?

Hi! Have you chance to try another TV or connect to the TV in a different way? For example, if you use scart, can you try component?
You need the correct cable of course, but from e-bay you find it with 5 euros... (6-7 dollars).
I do't know, I'm new, it is just an idea... what I can tell you is that I followed step by step, double checking every step and all went fine, including priload ;)

Hi! Use Winzoz and use this program "ImgBurn" at lowest speed (Google).
Also use Verbaidin DVD-R ONLY media. OK, you can try other brands than Verbaidin too, but "DVD-R" is a must. Is just that Verbaidin is known to work.
Anyhow, USB hard disk is much better... IMHO.

Hey guys, first time poster here.

I followed this guide to the letter and had a fantastic result with all my back ups. All my original discs work and im even using DVD + R discs for the backups.

Seemed great until i tried to use BBC Iplayer. I then realised i had no connection so i checked the Wii Shop Channel. Nothing. Mario Kart and Smash Bros, nothing. When i checked the internet settings and tested the connection it worked fine, and i even got through to the home brew browser. FTPII works fine as well.

As a last resort i thought i'd do a connection test and then see if i could update through nintendo, at the risk of softmodding from the begining again. Connection tested ok but then failed to update due to no connection. DAMN! Ive updated my router and restored factory settings for everything on there and the Wii.

Has anybody else had this or a similar problem? Or any advice or solutions?

***EDIT*** I should also probably mention that my friend down the road's Wii works fine online, so thats rules out a problem with nintendos network.

Me again. Sorry to waste anyones time, everythings working again now. My girlfriend put her new sophisticated looking glasses on, looked at the Wii with a deadly gaze and started playing Mario Kart online. wtf?

Must have been nintendos network but it seemed strange that my friend 200m down the road never had an issue. Oh well.

First of all, thanks larry for sharing the info with us.

I followed your instructions and everything worked without troubles. I've got the homebrew channel and the backup loader.

Unfortunately, I tried two backup games and none of them works:
- Grand slam tennis, it bricks my wii at the first green screen with the EA sports logo
- Call of Duty 3, this was loading but giving video troubles to my DVD recorder (i need to pass through this to go to the projector); anyway, hearing the sound made me find that I had to enable "more" or "all" under the region settings and the video is fine. The problem now is that all the buttons and the nunchuk work, but the wii remote is not seen by the sensor bar!!

Are you able to advice if it is setting problem or anything else?
Thanks a lot.

And, by the way, is it possible that there has been a video resolution degrade for the whole wii and applications (including the original disks)?? I have this impression but please tell me it's impossible!!!

MORE INFO ON TRUCHA BUG RESTORER HERE.

PATCH IOS36:

Start Trucha Bug Restorer again.

Select which IOS to Load (Change to IOS15) and Press A.

Again after a few seconds you will get a message that says Press 1 to start the application. At that time press 1

Thanks for the guide, Larry..I can't say I wasn't scared following it..expecting a brick with the next button press, but you really did cover it all in perfect detail :)

Now the honest flattery is done, I do have 1 problem, which I posted here however I believe it's best placed in this thread (and I can't delete it)

I'm struggling to get Guitar Hero 5 to give anything but a plain black screen running from DVD. Am I likely to have messed up the softmodding somewhere (and can I restore and start over?) or is there a simple solution?
Other games (mariocart + call of duty) both work from backup disks.

Thanks for any help

Be nice - Im new :)

You did the right thing by starting a new thread. The guide says to ask specific game questions in a new thread and not in this one. As to your issue I don't have GH games so hopefully someone else that does can help you.

Priiloader works hand-in-hand with Bootmii IOS. Together they form a good safety net to recover from bricks.

Hi Larry,

I have posted this question already in the USB loader thread but thought I would mention it on this thread as suggested by pryme_h

I read in a post on the USB loader thread that if you have followed your guide for the soft mod that you shouldn't need to use the patched IOS70 wad that pryme_h has linked to.
When I tried to follow the USB guide (striaght after the soft mod guide) I got the "FILES ARE CORRUPT ERROR".

I thought that I might have missed IOS70 so installed the wad and it worked second time round.

Last night however I soft modded my friends wii and followed your guide once again making extra sure that I included IOS70 at the end.
I then went to install the USB loader and got the same problem and the same fix.

Just wondered if you knew why? Or even care ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to write the tut and answer questions.

Kev
