I use a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition - works like a charm and cheap as.

Check http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/index.php/U...lity_List#Other for a list of drives that work / do not work.

Couple of questions.
Is this guide only for Wii that have a mod chip? I have a modded Wii (baught that way) but not sure if it is just a soft mod or has a mod chip. How can I tell?
Also how do you find if you are running cIOS36_rev8 or higher?
Main reason I am doing this is because I have started to get Error 002 message while playing newer games like PGA 2010 and GrandSlam. Otherwise the older games work seemlessly with backup launcher. Is this the right thing to do to solve this problem?
Thanks for your help.
Running Gecko OS 1.07b and Backup Launcher.

I updated my wii with the 4.0 update, and when I went to homebrew the screen was black and stayed black. I found somewhere in another post to unstall hbc and then reinstall. How do I reinstall, I deleted it from my wii channel. I am new at this, my friend did my twilight hack for me. Please help I want my homebrew back to play my gamecube games and wads. Thanks

To uninstall, "Removing the channel can be done by simply deleting it with the channel management in the Wii system software."
(see http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_Channel#Removal)

To install again, you can use bannerbomb instead of the twilight hack so you don't need a copy of Zelda. follow the first steps of the guide, i.e.
* Get bannerbomb and put the files on your sd card
* Get the hackmii installer files
* Follow the section of the guide on how to install HBC

I've followed Larry's guide which has been excellent. I was having trouble with playing burned ISOs so after blowing through a couple dvd's, i decided to try out the USB Loader GX. I can't get my USB to work (at first it worked sporadically but not it's not detected at all). It's Verbatim 160gb. It's listed as compatible on the site from the first post but no matter what I do it doesn't work (formatting to fat32, tried to get the wii to format by switching from a detected USB during the format process, different ports, plugging in before powering on the wii, pluggin in during the "cios 249" click to search of a usb, no game cube games, cards, or controllers plugged in).

So, I had deleted the backup channel by accident and when I reinstalled Larry changed to the Neogamma R6. I'm looking for help mostly with getting my USB HDD to work but I also want some tips on how to set the Neogamma since there are a lot of options.

Thanks ahead of time.

What does the NeoGammaR6-NGBL.wad do that WG3g002fix.wad doesn't?

Is there any reason to install? the only game i have a problem with currently is mortal kombat pal whitch freezes after the initial press a to continue screen.

Should we be keeping up with changes to the softmod guide?

This was why I previously questioned whether every time theguide changed if there should be a new thread so as to not confuse and cross polute the excellent work being done

Is there really a reason to update if I have no intention of using a larger SD card?

If you're not having problems with the original Wiigator gamma loader then you don't need to update to neogamma. Neogamma is based on gamma but has some additional features and bugfixes, nothing earth-shattering:

Changes to WiiGator's release:
- Ported to the new libogc
- Warning before memory card in slot 2 is accessed as usb gecko
- Auto Force Language option added, it forces english for games with region 'E'(NTSC-U) and japanese for games with region 'J'
- Moved memory stuff before the apploader. Now Red Steel and SSX should be working. (they still (try to) load their IOS themselves)
- Writes the Game ID Address(0x80000000) now into the memory at 0x80003184. Now Sam & Max and FarCry should be working. (they still (try to) load their IOS themselves)
- Save configuration to sd card
- Added Country String Patching (mostly helpful for japanese users with US and PAL games)
- Load Ocarina from SDHC and USB(when encountering problems, try the different strange options, using IOS61 is only compatible if NeoGamma was compiled with a libogc compatible with it like libogc SVN)
- Added option to patch video modes
- Added video modes that can be forced(MPAL) / Changed to use slightly different video modes
- Fake IOS Version in memory (this removes the 002 error)
- Changed to Graphics by: xabarasx

The next thing that I would try would be to install WFBS manager on your PC and format your hard drive from using it.

I was able to get my HBC back, and I upgraded to cIOS rev 13 in guide, but now I get error #002, that I had gotten rid of when I upgarded to cIOS rev 10. What should I do now to get rid of error #002? I also tried to load the NeoGammaR6-NGBL.wad, but when I go into the wad manager on HBC it does not show up what am I doing wrong?

I did every step all the way down to the gamecube step. I read and skipped the bootmii part. I need to install the bootmii, "Is that listed in the downgrade as patchmii," because that's what i ran after i finished the gamecube step. It didn't say bootmii 2 it just loaded some code. If not could you please explain how to put this on my homebrew channel, and hopefully I don't have to reinstall anything. Great tutorial everything went smooth so far. Thank, Pizzle

I've looked around and can't seem to find a solid answer on whether or not it is safe to follow this guide on a Wii with a wiikey modchip. Does anyone know if it is safe to do all these steps if you have a modchip?
The reason i ask is i want to safely update to 4.0u and still be able to install WAD files.
I followed this guide to the leter on a virgin wii and it worked great. USB loader, GameCube games, everything i tried. This guide made it so easy I dont even really even know what the hell I actuall did to the Wii but it plays games just like my modded one does. Just want to repeat the process without fear of damaging the mod chipped Wii.

Would appreciate any response.

hi there! i just recently bought a wii and am interested in modding it. it is currently version 3.4u. but i have very little info on the topic of modding. first of all, does the wii need to have a mod chip or a hard mod before using this guide. and secondly all i have to do is follow this guide and i can play copied/ back up games?

please assist me as i am very new to this but i am afraid of doing it without asking because i dont want to risk losing a console for my lack of knowledge.

regards satish.

just follow the guide listed on page one of this thread and you are good to go. Make sure your model number doesn't match the ones listed in red before you start.
I also did the optional stuff he mentions at the end of the guide and it all worked perfectly. I had a store bought unmodified Wii with 3.2u and after following the guide i was able to play backups, install VC Wiiware games to my SD card and Wii system, play backups off USB loader, and load backup games from the disc channel instead of using the backup launcher channel.
all you need is an SD card, computer, internet connection, and the ability to follow instructions. If you you can get your Wii hooked up Wifi it will make the softmod process a little smoother also. The guide you will mention this as you go through it.

Not sure about playing pal games. You could always give it a try and see what happens. DO NOT EVER UPDATE your wii using a pal(Europe) disc if your region is ntsc (USA). Always stick with updates from discs in the same region as your console or you will get duplicate weather and news channels. YOu will also loose access to your system menu.

AS for playing a backup game....
When you get done following the guide, you will have a channel called the backup launcher or something similiar. anytime you insert a backup game you will launch it using that channel. You will see the backup disc show up in the disc channel, but if you try to load if from there you will get an error. Original discs will still load fine through the disc channel.
If you click the links to the extra guides at the bottom of this guide, and follow those instructions, you will be able to launch your backup games through the regular disc channel.

LASTLY,

when you are all done following the guides, i recommend coming back to the first part of this guide, and repeating step 1, only instead of choosing and installing the homebrew channel, install bootmii.

If you look through the posts in this forum or google bootmii you will see what it does, and why you should install it.
