Ok, why is Shrink suddenly operating at a freakin' CRAWL? It is taking 2 hours to do what it usually does in 20 minutes. What's up with that? I go out there and buy 100 blank discs because of my newfound exuberace and now Shrink is acting up. What gives?

you can get nero ultra 6 free, it must be reloaded every month, but is good for the entire month. You can keep doing this until you decide to buy, which I highly recommend.
BTW, on the photo paper, you don't need the expensive stuff, once put in the DVD case the plastic on the case glossies it up just fine. I use epson photo paper which I pay 15.00 a pack(of 100) for.
Also I get my cases on ebay for 15-20.00 a case(of 100) including shipping.

while using Decrypter where it asks for me to select destination, it says that no devices are detected and it does not allow the drop down menu to be pulled down (grayed out).

shrink will automatically use decrypter to burn, since shrink rips, edits/re-authors, and compresses, there is no need to open decrypter. Just pick "iso and burn with decrypter" in the drop down menu in the shrink window that pops up after you hit backup.(look at my guide on page 13 of this thread;>))
If you are opening decrypter, you must use the read and write with iso in order to burn. It can't burn in file or ifo mode. Unless your files are under 4.37, since decrypter can't compress, you'll have to use another program (like shrink)to do that, so why bother opening decrypter at all? (That's probably why decrypter is greyed out and won't allow you to pick a burner.)
Unless of course shrink can't rip the movie. Then use decrypter to rip to your hard drive and then open shrink, and click on the open files button instead of the open disc button, and browse to your decrypter rip.

Right... Update time. I got my burner today and had partial success.
Prior to receiving the burner, I "backed-up" a couple DVD's to my HDD.
So today, I simply "burnt" them. The DVD burned beautifully, and took about 30-minutes from encoding to a complete disk.
However.
The DVD does not play on my XBOX or my vans DVD player. It does play on my PC DVD ROM and my PS2.
Is there any hints for compatibility?
Secondly, what is the advantage of "backing-up" a movie to your HDD? It seems like it takes even longer; since the encoding is done again.
FYI: I'm using Ritek 8x DVD-R's. I have a LiteOn 8x... I'm burning at 4x...

Sounds like compatibility problems for sure. Most new players will play ALL formats, but Xbox is a problem period with compatibility issues and as far as your DVD player does it play +,-,R,RW? And what was your media,+ or -?
Here is one of the best sites on the net(i keep it on my desktop for easy reference) for guides, software, conversion, etc. AND DVD players compatibility.

Your ide settings need to be DMA, not PIO. To check these go to: control panel > performance and maintenance > administrative tools > computer management > device manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > click on + mark.
Right click on each driver and hit properties and then hit on the advanced settings tab, under transfer mode pick DMA if available. Done. ..:>)

My DVD writer is a Sony DRU-710A +/- RW. The media I'm using now is TDK, both - and + formats. I have previously used Kodak and Sony, again in both formats.
The software I'm using is the combination DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink.
Everything worked like magic until about the 2nd day of use when both the image-making and burning processes began executing slooooooowly. Things that took 20 minutes now take 3 hours. I did not change any of my settings.

My primary and secondary IDE channels use the transfer mode of Ultra DMA Mode 5 and Ultra DMA Mode 2 respectively.

Ok, I figured out what the problem is. My source DVD is crap. I tried another one in my collection and within minutes I created a copy.

search66, while I use ebay for a great many things, DVD media is not one of them! Your discs are an excellent brand, Ridata +R 4x, I use them myself. You forgot one VERY important, you must get the "BRANDED" ones. Those aren't. You never know what you're getting unless they're branded especially on ebay.
Another good brand is Ritek G04 or G05 4x -R,again no difference in quality but -R seems to be more compatible than +R among the older players.
I get all my discs at newegg or meritline, they are very reputable and they sell the unbranded for about a dime less each than what you paid on ebay because they have free shipping. They have an excellent return policy and the "branded" Ridata 4x +R for under .45 each w/free shipping. If you notice, branded media is higher than unbranded media, why, if they are the same disc?
There is a handy little tool called DVDinfopro which you can DL, the free verison is all you need. It will analyze your media, drives, burners, formats, etc.
Formats are only what they state, formats. you need to pay attention to what you're playing your discs on, some are +, some are -,so you have + or -R and + or-RW. The site I gave you should tell you what your player plays.
As I said earlier, most new ones play all formats. I just bought a Philips DVP 642 at WalMart for 65.00, it plays all formats plus mpeg and Divx. It can also upgrade it's bios with a CD DL'd off the net.:>)

Hey there...first of all...nice work on all the support so far. I am a computer tech by day so I can appreciate the work that went into the details.
Next, forgive me if this was already mentioned...I read up until page 6 and my question wasn't mentioned so I decided to post.
Question: I am using shrink and decrypter as scuba mentioned but when I did it I had 2 things happen.
1. Created a folder under c:\movie\VIDEO_TS with 2 small files (.bup and .ifo)
2. Created 4 files in the directory I pointed to (My documents\...) and named them movie.I00, movie.I01..up to movie.I04
How do I take these files and burn them? I only have one drive.
Appreciate the help fellas.

jt_skins, I would run shrink, that is rip, edit or re-author, compress and then write to your HD since you only have one drive. You must use iso files to burn w/decrypter so you have to have shrink write to your HD in iso format.
Then open decrypter and browse to your folder with the shrink files and the iso image and burn using ISO > write under mode . Also, as rockyn mentioned page 13, it wouldn't hurt to read the ENTIRE thread. Believe it or not some people read several threads before posting, tho more often, NOT.LOL
I use nero to burn which you can DL each and every month for free for the full month(til you buy)to burn my files whether automatically with shrink or from the HD, since i prefer file mode. :>)
I wrote a quickie shrink guide which is on page 13.

I am trying to decrypt a DVD using DVD Shrink 3.2 but it says it's copyrighted in the analysis process. So I used DVD Decrypter. It worked great but now the files are too big to burn to a DVD. They're like 7.2 GB and I need it to fit on a 4.7 GB Disc. Please, if anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it

Swim,
After ripping with decrypter, open up shrink. there is an option to open files, right next to the open disc button. click that and then grab the files that your ripped with decrypter. if you ripped the disc in file mode then shrink will see the files as they are on a dvd then you can compress it following petes guide. shrink can not read the files if your ripped it to an .iso file, so you will have to redo what you have done and rip it in file mode. to do so in decrypter, select mode between view and tools, then select file f. that will rip the dvd as is and then shrink can do its thing.

Gimpie, Thanks for the help. I have another question. Does it matter what kind of DVD media one uses for burning. I've been told by some people that it doesn't matter so I should buy the cheapest discs. Is Memorex, for example, better than a generic brand?

if you read through this forum, you will realize that the type of media that you use makes all the difference when it comes to the disc playing well and preserving the data. get some good media, it doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, but check out newegg.com, or meretline.com for some media. get some branded Ritek g04 or g05. they can be had for as cheap as .45 per disc. I think you can get a 50 pack for about $30 at newegg. this is the type of media that i use and a lot of other people at this forum use and it serves well with making no coasters.
memorex is not good media. if you want soemthing that you can buy off the shelf at the local discount store, go for verbatim.
Here is a link to some good media, depending on what type of drive you have, the speed you get should be the determining factor, 4x discs will work fine in a faster drive, they just will take a little longer to burn. Oh, make sure you get + or - depending on what your drive can burn, or what you prefer to use as some drives will burn both types.

Hi all. i must say that I've been roaming these forums for a few months now and have been backing up my dvd collection using DVD shrink/Decrypter programs. I was one of the unlucky group that bought into the Dvdcopyx software. I have been following Scuba's and BigOrange's instructions and have about 100 backups with no coasters. For all those who have questions like I did when I started, just take a couple of hours to start at the beginning of this thread and every single question has been answered here. I have had all the same problems but just read this thread to get answers to all of them. Thanks to everyone posting on this site. It is extremely helpful

Just a note. I've started using iCopyDVDs2 and that seems to work. All you do is download the decripter code and your done. Its not too bad. It's not free though :| http://www.dvdcopyripper.com
