pattykmn, i use the default setting in Direct x video renderer.

here's a couple of links on ASPI, check out the 2nd one 1st. AsPI layer can be confusing, even for oldtimers, this link does a fair job of explaining them.(The 1st link is here in AD)

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm

http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/aspi.htm

This is a must for DVD burning. If you have Nero Ultra 6, open toolkit and click on the infotool, then on ASPI layers, this should tell you about your ASPI. There is a drop down menu for system(should be 4) and nero(should be 1) ASPI.

I use force aspi, there is a little tool called aspichk, it's free, and it will tell you if your aspi layer is working properly.

I am still not a fan of your burner, listen to nailedny, she had similar problems(among some others, right nailedny?, heh heh) and went to a plextor.

I'm new to DVD burning!!! How new, I'm just starting today. I downloaded the newest DVD decryter and DVD Shrink. From reading msgs on this forum, that is what everyone recommends. I have read Scuba's articles on how to do things, but I get confused very easily. Can you please please break it down into simple english in and as few steps as possible using these 2 software programs to burn the movie Finding Nemo for my child who turns 5 in 1 wk. I mean I want it so simple like put dvd in now, then go this program to copy, etc. etc. Thank you very much. I am the clueless one here in this forum

I?ve tried using the guide and my dvd come out great with only one exception ill be watching the movie and all of a sudden it stop playing. When it gets stuck I can?t go forward, backward or chapter back or forth. I?ll have to restart the movie and fast forward past the spot. This doesn?t happened with every movie I copy but it dos seem to happen allot.
I was using dvdxcopy and I thought it was the problem but dvdshrink dos the same thing.

mtfred,

what kind of media are you using to burn your backups to? It sounds like this is your problem since it doesn't happen all the time. Try picking ups some branded Ritek g04 or g05 from newegg or meritline. These discs only cost about 50 cents each and work great. Read back through the forum and there will be some other types suggested and not suggested, but cheap media will cause a lot of problems when it comes to playback.

I read the problems others had with the MicroAdvantage burner, but the thing is, mine worked great! I've had it for so long there's no option of returning it....
I don't "think" the burner was causing my slowness. It burned just like it should when the time came. I don't even really mind the two hour decoding time, but when I heard others are doing it faster I just thought I'd ask too :)

I may purchase a regular DVDROM for playing/inputting the movies, but buying another burner is simply out of the question at this time. Let's just hope my MicroAdvantage holds out long enough for me to do what I want to do for now -- so far so good (if this burner is considered "less sophisticated", maybe it's working for me because I'm still running Win98!?) ;)

Oh yeah.. the ASPI layer -- In Decrypter I get a "!" telling me that I do have an ASPI layer but that it is version one. I suppose this is the standard stuff that came with Win98?
My basic question: would updating the ASPI layer make DVDShrink decode faster? Or should I leave it alone as it does work fine with no errors? (just slow).

I?ve been using Philips brand dvd+r. It seemed to be a good brand.
I think I'll try recording it at 1x and see that makes any difference

mtfred,

While burning at slower speeds does reduce the chance for errors (i usually burn at 2.4x to 4x but no higher), listen to gimpie. Media makes a HUGE difference!

I don't understand why people will listen to us about software, methods, hardware, etc., but won't when it comes to media. This is not CD or VHS recording. It is a whole new ballgame and media is one of the largest factors there is! I can't count the problems I've solved just having people switch their media.

Trust me on this, it may not seem a big deal, you think; well the quality might not be as good but I can live with that. Well I'm here to say it can cause it not to work at all or even if it does work you could come back a year or two later and voila! it doesn't work at all.

Also, good media doesn't mean you have to spend a ton of money. In fact some of the worse brands cost more than what I use. As gimpie mentioned use Ritek G04 4x -R or Ridata 4x +R. Make sure they are BRANDED! Costs a couple cents more, but it's well worth it to know what you're getting. You're still talking under .50 each w/free shipping!

A lot of brands farm out their media and one batch may be MCC or Ricoh(good) and the next may be CMC(bad). You want consistency, after buying all the hardware and software required to make DVD backup, why would anyone leave it to chance simply because they didn't buy reliable media?

The choice is up to you :>)

pattykmn,

Your burner wouldn't have anything to do with the program's slowness. Only with the burn itself. If it's working in that department there is no need to change.

Slowness problems are due to things like DMA settings, your processor, Ram, etc.

Did you go to those sites I told you about on ASPI?

They talk about windows 98 and what is needed. Also, did you DL ASPICHK and see what it said?

You must have a properly working ASPI layer. I use XP and am not as familiar with '98 but that site tells you exactly what to use on '98.

Before you try anything else, use ASPICHK and see if it tells you whether your ASPI is installed and working correctly. The latest drivers (version 4.72) from Adaptec are supposed to work under 98/ME/NT/2K/XP. The DL links are in that URL I gave you.

The four files needed for WinNT/2K/XP are the following:

WINNT\SYSTEM\WINASPI.DLL
WINNT\SYSTEM\WOWPOST.EXE
WINNT\SYSTEM32\WNASPI32.DLL
WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ASPI32.SYS

The four files needed for Win95/98/Me are the following:

WIN95\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\APIX.VXD
WIN95\SYSTEM\WINASPI.DLL
WIN95\SYSTEM\WNASPI32.DLL
and ONE of the following two files
WIN95\SYSTEM\ASPIENUM.VXD (this is the file that comes from Adaptec)
WIN95\ASPI2HLP.SYS (this is the file that comes with Win95)

As I said earlier I use Force ASPI and Nero has it's own ASPI driver :>)

Only version 1.4 is free and in order for it to work you must download patin couffin for it to work. Patin couffin has been known to cause problems in some peoples PC's.

Version 2.0 is standalone, but costs the same as anydvd, if you are gonna buy one, then anydvd's record is better than DVD43. It is constantly being updated and has recently just added a hard copy read error bypass which is recently being used to prevent DVD backup.

Anydvd's average is 20% higher than DVD43 as far as getting around DVD encryption :>)

I did go to those ASPI links Orange, Thanks.
I was leary because so much of it said 'this works with this OS but not that one and sometimes not this one either...' etc etc... and that if it didn't work to just use your windows install CD to go back to what you had -- except that my Windows CD has gone bad, so the last time I ever did a reformat and clean install was literally going to have to be my last time!

However, the more I read about it the less scary it seems. It's just like updating my drivers for a printer or anything else, ...isn't it?

p.s. I can't do the .exe right now cuz I'm at work (shhh, don't tell) :)

Getting to grips with this burning now and turning off anti virus speeded things up, good tip thanks.

It might appear a silly question, but once the ISO is on my Hard Drive, am I right in thinking that I can then just complete the burn process from this file each time???? without using encryptor again.

Iffin you don't mind my friend, allow me to clarify your post for the many pple who are just now tuning in and haven't gone back to the beginning to see where your statement came from -.

You are speaking of the ISO image AFTER DVD Shrink is done with it. In this case you are in fact 100% correct. AFTER DVD Shrink has processed it you may burn it to disc when ever you wish. At one time I had 34 DVD's, most in ISO form, on my HD waiting for me to get around to ordering blank discs. I does get forgetful from time to time. (Good thing I've got me some super fine friends like the Big "O" guy who's doing such an excellent and commendable job helping you all so well ? I'm going to nominate him for "Newbie God" of the year - Who's with me on this --

Ooohh, Back to my point - There are times when our "Hero" Mr. DVD Shrink just can't seem to get a handle on an encryption and so we ask DVD Decrypter to help out by ripping the DVD in the "File" Mode OR the "ISO", "Read", "Mode." It is in this latter mode that will find ourselves with an extremely HUGE (Lol) ISO image on our HD. Solely because of it's size we will then have an unburnable ISO image on our HD. We can feed this one to DVD Shrink using "File" then "Open image file" which will grab that image file and allow DVD Shrink to process it in the normal manner - At some time in the near future you'll need this piece on information so if you don't already have it, make a "Postie" of this so you'll be prepared.

Cheers,

Pete

To whomever wishes to know - - ,

I've just done a major re-write of my DVD Shrink / DVD Decrypter Guide located on page 1 of this thread. It includes updated settings and a section on DVD Shrink's Quality Enhancement settings. I was also aware of one or two small gaps which didn't seem to cause anyone here a problem BUT, looking for perfection they required patching. If you are using one of my guides located elsewhere PLEASE, PM me with it's address so that I can make sure it's "up-to-snuff" as well.

Thanks everyone for the kind words on my guides so far, hopefully, this one will be better.

and if anyone "catch's" some "Boo-Boo's in this one, step up and let me know, again, Thanks -

Pete

Did I hear someone looking for a Boo-Boo meister Pete? LOL

Someone way back in this thread mentioned Imation as a less than desirable brand. Look again, that is one of the brands manufactured by Ricoh and is one of the better brands unless they change manufacturers. That is what happened to Memorex. They switched so much no one knows what they're buying. Some of their media was made by major companies that make media for other brand names. A lot of good media is made for different brands by the same manufacturers. An example is Ricoh. Maxell, Imation, Verbatim, and RiData, are just some of the brands produced by Ricoh.
Memorex used to use Ricoh, but they switched. So, it is easy to see why the mixed reports on Memorex. Some people could have gotten the good media while others may have gotten the questionable stuff.

On the question of ripping speeds, lets all get on the same playing field first. I've noticed people using terms to mean different things. Like a rip took 2 hours; meaning the recording took 2 hours. That could be confusing. Usually "rip" means the decryption process or decrypting and storing to the HD. Encoding or transcoding is the process of taking the decrypted/ripped file and sizing (compressing) it to fit the target disk. "Burning" is the process of recording the encoded (shrunk/compressed) files to disk. So there you have Rip + Encode + Burn; which are the basic steps involved in a backup.

Several things are involved in rip time. With DVD Decrypter a favorite of mine, or DVD Shrink, the rip process depends on disc size, DVD 5 or 9, and how large the Video_TS file is. As with most things the CPU and RAM have to be taken into account along with the amount of system resources free to accomplish the task. With some Decrypters and programs, the decryption is almost instantaneous as with AnyDVD (a background decrypter) used with a transcoder program such as DVDCopy2. From short DVD 5 to large movies on DVD 9, my rip times vary from about 10 to 25 minutes, unless I use AnyDVD to record on the fly (best to be done with a fast cpu and lots of RAM).

Encoding is usually the time consuming process and varies due to system resources, the application used and the settings. I've done encodes in 20 min or less for full length movies on some programs and several hours for others. One of my favorite encoders is RB/CCE and it takes a few hours to encode a movie. However the results are astounding and the time involved is worth it.

Burning is relatively fast. 4X is usually about 15 minutes. The faster burners can beat that time, but 4X is a good speed because fewer errors occur at the lower writing speed and the media being less expensive is a plus.

So weigh the variables when you go to talking about speed when making DVD backups and try to make sure you're using the terms to mean the same thing when talking about the process. I've been at it a while and I still get confused at times.

This is so cool! I made my second backup today.
This time I hit standby on my cable modem,
paused my antivirus,
cleaned the DVD first (I thought I'd read that contact lens solution is ok to use - hope that's true)
and I UNchecked the low priority option in DVDShrink.

This movie encoded in like 10 minutes versus the last one was two hours! Granted, this file was only 2.5 GB, but logic leads me to believe a 4GB movie will take around 20 minutes then. The average burn rate (is that the right phrase?) was 5400kb/s.

This is SO COOL!!! THANK YOU!!

This is a somewhat unrelated question: Can you use permanant markers (i.e. "Sharpies") to write on the top side of DVD?

The permanent Sharpie is one of the best ways to ID discs; no out of balance labels or deterioration problems down the rode. For the terminology look at my previous post. I got a bit confused when I read what you wrote. For cleaning discs, a mild solution of vinegar and distilled water works great. (It also works good for cleaning windows and glasses.) Then just dry and polish the disk with a soft lint free cloth (old tshirts work fine). That contact cleaner is a bit pricier than vinegar and water.

Yes, contac solution would be pretty spendy on a regular basis wouldn't it! I didn't have any rubbing alcohol on hand and I never even thought of vinigar & water, thanks!

Btw, it really was the encoding that only took 10 minutes; I was amazed! And then the burning I never did have a problem with so I guess I didn't need to put that in there. I can see where that sounded strange, I sort of put two thoughts into one. Sorry :)

The vinegar and water is what you get for ammonia free glass cleaner in the nice spray bottles. It's a whole lot cheaper to just mix your own. The plus is that it has a better scent than the alcohol you mention and isn't as damaging to surfaces.

That 10 min rip you mention is about par for a small file. Don't get upset if you see that climb to 20 to 25 min for a large capacity DVD with large files.
