You can dl a routine that will remove/install the proper ASPI layer. There are 2 files to dl...ForceASPI 18 and aspichk.exe. The second one checks to see that it went OK. If yes, Nero will also give you a green bar on it.

Thanks again Doc409

My fastest drive I believe is my SATA 160GB 150 MB/sec with 8 mb cache. Should I partition that drive and install the operating system or just use that whole drive for video. I believe my other drives ATA 100 and 133 only have 2mb cache.

I can't say for sure. I don't have a SATA board that I can check. A lot depends upon your BIOS setup, and if you can set it to boot from your SATA port, because this is what you will have to do.

The SATA drive will work faster if you can use it, but I don't know how much, or what kind of performance increase you would get. I think as long as you have a 7200 RPM IDE drive you will get the performance you need, though. If it were me, I think I would want to use the 160 for the video files.

NEONADAM...it is OK for your CPU to run at a constant 100% as long as it is cooled. A reduced CPU speed means it will take longer to encode video filesl. The newer CPU's will slow down if they get too hot, and your bios can also be set to warn you if you get into an overtemp situation.

If you still want to slow it down, Shrink has a background mode that you can run in. This will also let you do other tasks while encoding. To access do Edit >> Preferences and check the "Run analysis..." block.

Your mobo should have a manual that tells you how to set up the BIOS. If you don't have the manual, you can probably get the mfgr and model no. off the board itself, and then look it up online. Many boards can be accessed by pressing the Delete key right at startup. Others use a function key like F8. Some startup screens will also tell you what key to press to enter Setup, which is your BIOS.

In the BIOS there will be different menus. One will probably be called PC Health Status, and you can enable the CPU Temp warning.

Hi Doc 409

I've redone my computer like you suggested and installed all the updates. Does it matter in which order I install DVD Shrink, Decrypter, and Nero to ensure that Nero will be an option using shrink. What kind of encoding speeds should I expect with my setup? Does it interfere with speed if I decrypt files to my SATA drive using Decrpter and then encode the files using Shrink on the same drive or should I put them on a seperate drive. If it does make a speed difference should I decrypt on non SATA drive and encode on the SATA drive. Thanks for your help. I will let you know when things are working.

Since you have a choice, I would install Nero first and then check to see that the ASPI layer is installed correctly, along with the drives DMA enabled. I would then do Decrypter, and then Shrink.

AS far as what drive to use, I don't know which drive your OS is installed on, and if you partitioned the system and software files by themselves?

Thanks Doc409

I partioned my 7200 120 GB in 20Gb for operating system and programs and the 100GB for files. I have my 80 GB which is on ide3 and the SATA drive. I removed the drive I previously had my operating system on to make sure my new setup on the other drive works well. If all goes well I will reformat and it will become the slave drive. If the setup i have now doesnt work well I will put the other drive back in and go from there. I'm sure I've totally confuse you by now. Thanks again.

It sounds like your SATA drive will work the fastest for you. Remember to set up a page file on it.

If you rip with Decrypter, and import into Shrink, it might be a little faster to split these up between drives. I would rip to D: (presuming that C: is the boot partition), and then encode Shrink on the SATA. If you use only Shrink, stay on the SATA drive.

Since quality of encode is my primary concern, I mostly use the DVD Rebuilder-CCE encoding process. I use a program called Remake for editing out the warnings and trailers before encoding, and it saves a lot of time when exporting the edited files to another drive for encoding.

I think I might of run in to a snag. I've installed and updated Nero. However, DMA does not show up in Nero Info Tool. I have Nero installed on my laptop and it does. It just says autorun on. I've made sure in device manager its current transfer mode is Ultra Dma. Also I noticed in Info that its only showing 2x reading and 12x writing. I was under the impression and says on the box of my Plextor 712A that it is suppossed to read 16x. Could that be why I had problems with Shrink analyzing and encoding from the DVD? If its not one problem its another. I'm going to install Decrypter and see if I still get decent ripping speeds and then install Shrink and see how fast and if it will give me the option to burn with Nero. Thanks again for your responses.

Hi Doc409

I'm definately having problem installed Decrypter and it is ripping at 2X. I think there must be something with the service pack 2. Or I'm just unlucky.

If you haven't done a firmware update to your Plextor since purchasing it new, this is likely your problem.

On the off chance you need a firmware upgrade, I'll post a good link when I I cna put my hands on it. You need to be careful about modded firmware updates.

Hi.

I put my other drive back that I had to redo after my first sp2 back in the computer and dvd decrpter is averaging reading between 8-10x. I believe that when I installed sp 2 the first time I ran into that problem that it was extremely slow for decrypter and Shrink. That's what started this quest. I just haven't been able to get Shrink to work like it used to pre the updates. I will look and see if there is an update firmware for my drive and then swap drives and see if I get any more speed. If not then I guess windows sp 2 doesn't like this computer or configuration. Thanks again.

I would encourage you to stay with SP2. Here is the Plextor firmware link:

Hi Doc409

I updated the firmware thanks. DVD Decrypter back to working. It took about 11min to rip LOR_TT

Dvd Shrink is still averaging about 2000kb/s. I still don't have the option of burning with Nero. Only with Decrypter or harddrive folder. So I don't know what's going on. Thanks again for your help.

Are you saying that Nero won't burn at all, or that you can't connect Nero with the Shrink option to use the burner?

Hi.

I uninstalled Nero and DVD Shrink has link stating to enable Nero burning you must install Nero. I installed Nero again and the link goes away and the only options still are harddisk, and decrypter. I checked the preferences and Nero box is checked I then uninstalled Shrink and then tried Nero 3 more times even clicked the link to enable burning with Nero which takes me to the website I ran it from there but still no option no such luck. Any one else have the same problems. It used to work no problem before sp2 and reinstalling the operating system. Thanks

Hi Doc409

It doesn't give me the option in Shrink. As far as I know Nero will burn on its own but haven't burned a disc since I've reinstalled everything. Thanks

So, what you are saying is that when you open Shrink, and go to the pull down menu... Edit >> Preferences >> File I/O, you can't check the "Enable Burning With Nero" Box? Also, on this tab have you checked "Enable Overlapping I/O...?" This should speed ripping.

And, on the Preference tab, is "Run analysis in background mode" checked, or not checked? If it is checked, this would also help explain the slow rip speed.

Hi.

Nero is checked but when I go to backup and its asks for 'Select Backup target': only options are 'create iso image file'- iso image file or iso image file and burn with dvd decrypter
and 'create dvd files'- hard disk folder

Select target folder for DVD output files
it will not allow me to choose the dvd drive as a target either

When I uninstalled Nero I opened Shrink and there was a link if you want to burn with Nero you need to install or download, both of which I did, I'd reinstall go back to Shrink the link disappears, and there is still no option to burn with Nero.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I know when I installed everything a couple of months ago I didn't have to do anything and it allowed me to burn with Nero through Shrink

I guess its really no big deal but it sure was convenient to just put a disc in the drive and when shrink finished encoding it would burn with no problems.

Thanks again for your help
