He means because most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Because you need a chip to play imports, they assume you'd have a chip if purchasing a game. Thus they can sell you a copy and *most* people wouldn't be able to tell the difference since the chip would boot it anyway.

maybe u know it but
u dont need to copie ps2games on disks 2 play it !!
u need the programm winHIIP and a formatted hdd
with the programm u load the file up and convert it a bit for the playstation
with the networkadapter and a chip (duo or christal or...)
and a hd loader disk in ur ps2 (that runs the hdd) u can run the most games from ur hdd in ur ps2
and the loading-time is shorter

Ah a skimmer. Read at least the last page (13) and you'll realize that it's not possible to play GT4 from a HDD. Just not possible at all. This is because it looks for a secong layer on the disk, which the hard drive program has no clue what is.

now you know what? I am wondering if you were to go through and tell it to just look on the first layer for the second layer stuff, it may make it possible to play it on your hdd without downsampling anything. Im not sure but it may be worth a shot.

How do u work out all the 2nd layer calls when u cant get into the .vol file to read them? Plus there is likely to be MANY calls, so sifting through it would be a huge task.

well..... all the calls to the second layer HAVE to be on the first layer. And the .vol file is whats on the second layer. So if you open the program on the first layer, look at the call to the second layer, then just change it and tell it to look on the first layer would that not work?

I am not good at hex editing so I cant say for sure how feasable this is, but like I said its worth a shot??

The HDD thing is what I was hoping for. I'm getting the Chinese torrent version to see if I can play around with it. I don't know hex, but it couldn't hurt to learn something new and seeing as I have to do something to understand it, I might as well use this as an opportunity.

I am new to this forum and dont want to sound like I am flaming a post ---
PMN74 on that site - they dont actually state anywhere that they are Original's - just state they are "Real Imports".
If you have stumbled across this site - its prob cos you been looking in the right places --- as I had to have good look round after reading your post.
Pretty clear they are dodgy as the site says where the discs are sourced from.... Argentina, Mexico etc

as no-one in the scene managed to get GT4 going yet...
I didnt mind paying £14 as long as it works when it turns up.

Hey guys, just wanted to jump in on the conversation :)

Hope you don't mind...anyways from what I've been reading I would assume that if a game of that caliber is giving us such a headache it is probobly true that it may well be copy protected. I can't recall another game that is a DVD9 that booted up to the same point on everyones post and then froze. Also remember that, as far as I know, I haven't herd from any one who has got past that specific boot "safe driver" screen. I guess us over here in the States will just have to wait and twik with our original copy. I let you guys know what I come up with. I have a pretty good stock of Ritek DLs as well as some cool progs. But I do believe that we will have to wait a bit for a .ppf patch or something. Till then...

This is an english forum, but if you have trouble following this thread, basically in 14 pages seems none has achived a reliable method to backup the image or a way to shrink it to a DVD5 media...

Reply to JLeague:

English pre-translated version:
This is typed out using google translation so it's most likely very crappy and I don't speak Italian. But to sum it up, Gran Turismo 4 is 6.6GB Dual-Layer and impossible to copy. It's coded in the game to look at the second layer for information so it won't work with a hard drive program. It also won't work with burned dvds because burnable dvds come pre-formatted in the wrong format.

Doubley informative seeing as its already been said a thousand times in this thread before, with extra added usefulness of being in a foreign language on an english forum. *sigh*

Wonder if any proper scene groups will look at gt4 again when it gets european / US release next month.

It would appear that Sony have a fool proof method of preventng backups. Who is to say that all future games wont come on a DVD9 in the GT4 manner?? Food for thought.....

since dawn of mankind they tried to put copy-protection on many games, we beat them all, and we will beat them this time.

Dude. . . Did you even read any of the posts. NONE WILL WORK at this point. Unless you have a press, give it up. People can't even copy their original version. God damn. . .

alright. This is my very first post on this forum. I just finished reading the 14 pages of posts you guys wrote in about a month an a half. Let me make a very short summary of all this. If anyone sees anything wrong with what I am writing, please correct me, as I'm trying to have a clear picture of what is going on. I am not very experienced with DVD double layer tachnology, so I dont quite understand what parallel traking, or opposite tracking mean. I will try to keep it as simple as possible.

1)GT4 (all versions up to now, Chinese, Japanese and surely US and PAL) comes on a two layer DVD which is written with a special system file. So it cannot be burned on a DVD9.

2)GT4 cannot be used on a PS2 HD either, as all the software available for PS2 HD is not compatible with double layer ISO files. It woldn't even help merging the two layers into a big one with both vol files, as (correct me if I am wrong) on the first layer there are "special calls" to the second layer, and not to the vol file.

3)The only possible way to baack up this disc is to rip the 6 GB image into a 4.5 one that fits on a regular DVD-R or DVD+R.

Now I got some questions.
I saw on a post (obviously dont remember which one) that we should be able somehow to modify these calls to the second layer, so the game could eventually be played on a HD (a requirement would be of course inserting the gt41.vol present on layer 2, in the first layer, even if after the operation this layer turns out to be bigger than 5 gb. After all, who cares if we play it on a HD!!!) Now, because it would be impossible to modify these calls manually, is there any software that is capable of doing that automatically?

Is there any tool to extract the gt4 vol file, without error messages? If yes, could you address me to it?

Thanks very much to you all, and please excuse my english!

Luigi
