@ t1nemesis
the only thing i can suggest is like sed8ed said, restore decrypter to default settings and see.
the other thing is is your drive making any weird noises, hanging, etc, etc, did you check the firmware with the link i gave you,you might have to revert back to the original firmware or get a cross patch firmware for that drive, they are the only things i can think of

any burning software that supports dual layer should burn it,just make sure you patched it with the toxic patch first :).
nero should do it for you.

I dont think it's the software. I am somewhat confident that the "ntsc" is not a factor although I have not seen any post confirming if the burns have been successful with the patch...I am running out of possible explanations. Samuels asked about your firmware, have you checked it. is there anything at liteon to say there has been any problems with the media???. Of course applying the patch is important. If you havent done it I suggest you do so, but I was under the imppression that you werent even getting that far?? 49% complete and then coaster right??

Yep
49% then a coaster. And my drive is making weird clicking sounds. And where do I restore the default settings?

default setting for DVD Decrypter can be found in "tools" then "Settings" and then click defaults in bottom left corner.

As for the sounds on the drive "not good" i would presume. I had a dvd rom that after a firmware upgrade went "poof" only to become an electronics drinks tray.

Yes,
That's the firmware I am using DR8VS0G and still all kind of clicking before the write. Then freezes at 49%.

All I can suggest is:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/77

I'd post your problem here and then wait for a reply. The clicking is not a good indication of the drives health. One other thing that did cross my mind was maybe you need to set the layer breaks manually. I was reading in a review site about a sony which also had a similiar problem and worked initially with only a few software programs. What didnt work in one program (after error message and half way burn problems) worked in another program after setting the layer breaks manually. You could give it a go but at $ whatever the cost of the media i guess this would be expensive. If the drive still burns movies etc without noise I guess it is still working o.k I am not a tech but guessing can sometimes be advantageous.

i'd be looking for an even more updated firmware for your burner, make sure you get a cross patch firmware upgrade as these can be unistalled to original firmware....or even look for the firmware that came originally with your burner

got a little bit of advice for all xp users....bin it and install win2k pro!!,honestly,i help run a support group and win xp has all sorts of strange dvd/cd rom drivers (ascpi integrated for example)in it that will make your life a misery when making disks, had so many people trying to burn standard dvd's that didn't work,xp takes control of your drives and constantly runs a file that initializes them, causing configuration/burning problems(ever noticed that when you put a dodgy disk in everything freezes and locks up!!) and turn off system restore! or xp will (on reboot)keep reverting back to the original ascpi driver/settings even if you disable it! rather than win2k which you have to manually do everything(a lot more control),xp is just software to keep pc diagnostic engineers in buisness(i'm training to be one of them!!),it's the mutha-f**king-antichrist,it's for little girls that like pretty colors, haha, nah, only kidding,it does look nice and it's good for families but for real cracking/crunching/hacking/burning/...use win2k-pro,it's the mutts nutts!!any news on a .vol file extractor anyone??

Right I've tried to follow this long thread

Modchip users seem sorted but people using SwapMagic don't seem to be having much luck, but Samuels said

"for those of you with a mod chip who did a copy of gt4 originally (on a dvd9) and just got to the loading screen, you can save yourself another dvd9,by:
extracting the image from the copied dvd9 using dvddecrypter, apply the toxic 1.0 dvd dl patch, mount the image on a virtual drive(ie.alcohol),burn the image on a dvd5(it'll only be 3.09 gb),then when it comes to playing, use the dvd5 to boot(until the screen goes blank and freezes) and then insert your copied dvd9,the toxic patch will be applied with the dvd5 and will allow the dvd9 to play,i'm playing it now off the unpatched otp dvd9!! [Quote]

sounds logical...but why, this patch plays on all mod chips with probably the exception of the very old usb type chip,i forget the name of the chip.i can't speak for solderless chips,as i don't know if it works on them or not..... "

Now to me surely the modchip would have detected the DVD5 tostart with and then booted it up with single layer boot code, but still the DVD9 still works after it has been swapped!

So does this mean if you use SwapMagic to boot the DVD5, and then use the EA method when it freezes on the black screen to put in the DVD9 would it possibly work and provide a swap magic solution?

I havent tried because I've not got any DVD+R D/L, and they're quite expensive here in the UK still.

Could someone please test it if they've got the discs

no samuels it doesn't work on all chips. won't work with a Magic 3.1, that chip won't read any dual layer disks when it is in PS2 mode (that's why you've got to switch modes to watch dvd movies), so it won't even boot the original GT4 disk unless you boot in the other mode. so its a catch-22, it won't read the disk in PS2 mode, will read the disk but not boot a backup game in the movie mode.
the patch fixes the OTP/PTP issue, but the size of the game still requires a DL disk - every PS2 can read dual layer backup media, but some chips, at least the Magic 3.1, won't boot games from it.
I have a Magic 3.1 chip and you'll be happy to hear it's perfectly okay on mine! Yeah basically the original has to be booted by holding in the reset button till the blue eject light comes on, but with the patch applied to the copy it loads fine in ps2 mode. Somehow those brilliant guys at toxic have managed to fool the supposedly non-dual layer chips as well as the compatible ones.

For the record I built my copy using DVD Decrypter, Verbatim DL Media, Toxic's patch, V8 PS2 with Magic 3.1, NEC ND2500A Burner with DL Firmware writing at 4x speed. Also works with samuels swap method as well.

I found a site that sells Verbatim DL Disks for a fiver in the UK and datasafe which also works ok, at a mere £2.49. So yes it is getting cheaper by the day!!

Hey since I am new, I am probably going to ask another dumb question. I am just wondering if anyone has made a successful copy of GT4 onto a DVD5 disc, and if so, does it work with Swap Magic w/ the slide card?

indeed i am happy to hear that! i'm glad to be proven wrong. the backup i made works fine on my mates v7 PS2 with DMS3, as it didn't work on my v7 with Magic 3.1 i assumed it must be the chip. but i was also kind of hoping that maybe my PS2 just doesn't like the media. i used datasafe for £2.49 and was wondering it its worth buying a verbatim disk to try. after reading your post, i think i might give it a shot.

i have to correct you here,i didn't make that statement...and so therefore can't take credit for it,as i think it was sharky 22 or speccyfan that got this one sorted.
