I have a Pioneer DVR-108 and the book type cannot be changed - it says DVD+R DL but I burnt it anyway and the game plays fine. I think Sony's might be the same.

just a little guide for rhe book type newbies:
1.start dvd-decrypter
2.selct tools-drive>change book type
3.select your dvd brand
4.select 'change for' and goto dvd+r dl media.
5.select 'new setting',dvd-rom (it'll tell you yor current setting here)
it will also tell you how many changes you have left.
when i copied gt4 the first time i didn't change the book type and it still plays using the 'patched dvd5' method, don't know if this makes much difference, but i'd change it just in case as it could be incompatible with certain chips.
has anybody actually tried using a patched dvd9 or the patched dvd5/normal dvd9 method for swap magic yet as i'd be interested to see what happens,i got SM 3.3,but i can't get it working as i have a dms3 in my v10 and even by disabling it i can't get SM to work(plus i wan't to flog it to my mate but need to test it first, as for that slide card shit......!!WTF),hope you all got flip tops

Hi, I'm using an older chip Messiah2 on a PAL ps2 (aus)

I made an iso using decrypter, used the toxic patcher, and reburnt the image to a verbatim DL disc using an LG 4120 dl dvd burner.
In the decrypter book type change, none of the drivers would let me change it to dvdrom, so i burnt it anyway and the game works perfectly fine!... so im assuming that the book type on the LG is dvd rom by default?

anyway just thought id add that feedback in as a successful burn

Hey,I burn't the first layer onto a dvd+rw (dvd5) with the booktype set at dvd+r just as an experiment.Boots up and lets you load memory card info then after that crashes. So I think dvd-rom booktype isn't an issue.
Just to confirm once more:
DVD decrypter Read 2x
patch iso.
Don't mount on a virtual drive.
Close anything you have running in the background(anti-virus,spyware scanners etc).Probably not neccessary but the more resources you have available to DVD Decrypter the better.
Burn at 2x (although mine burnt at 2.4 times with no problems)
Used Verbatim dvd9 media.

This question was never answered! Does the Toxic patch work for NTSC versions of GT4 too or not? We know it works for PAL versions.

lhys09915 - what exactly is the problem? describe what your PS2 does when you try to load the game - any noises/clicks? does it go to the browser screen? red screen of death? what does it normally do?

step by step guide -

1) get DVD Decrypter, get toxics patch
2) make an iso of the game using DVD Decrypter (iso -> read mode)
3) patch the iso with toxics patcher
(4) change the book type to dvd-rom. this may not be necessary as people have reported success with the book type set to DVD+R DL, but to do it, right click on your dvd writer in DVD Decrypter and select 'Change Book Type', click the tab for the manufacturer of your writer, under 'Change For' select 'For DVD+R DL media' and under 'New Setting' select 'DVD-ROM' then click ok)
5) burn the image to disk (iso -> write mode)

that's it! (wasn't so hard now was it?)

Hints (from what i've read) -
Media doesn't seem to be too important. Success has been reported with a variety of all media, including anything with the Ritek dye, Datasafe, Traxdata, Verbatim etc. The prefered media seems to be Traxdata or Verbatim though.
Updating the firmware of your dvd writer might help. there's a function in DVD Decrypter that finds up to date firmware for you, or visit the manufacturers website.
Make sure the iso DVD Decrypter creates is around 5gb in size. if its around 3gb, it didn't copy both layers. by default settings and with an original game, you shouldn't have this problem.
It should be obvious, but some people have asked anyway, that you need to patch the iso file, NOT the mds file that decrypter makes (well duh, as the patcher won't successfully patch the mds anyway)
Make sure the patcher says patching is successful, and make sure the iso files last modified date is the minute you applied the patch (just in case its read only or something)
Selecting the mds or iso file to burn doesn't make a difference, except decrypter shouts at you if you select the iso, and then selects the mds for you (its just picky :P)
Burn at a slow speed (2.4x worked fine for me, you might want to do 1x to be on the safe side), and maybe do a test burn first.
This works for ALL versions of the game, the patch is applied to only one file, which is the same regardless of what version of the game you have.
At present it appears a DL copy does NOT work on Swap Magic disks, most likely due to the large TOC. If someone has an original game with a larger TOC that GT4, try it. Logically it should work, but then again who knows...
This should work with ALL modchips. It has been reported to work with chips that do not even officially state they support dual layer media (and i can vouch for this - it works on my Magic 3.1, and if it works with that it will work with anything!)
If it doesn't work, try recalibrating your laser (that's what my PS2 required). If your PS2 clicks or whirrs when first trying to read the disk, this may be your problem as it was mine.

Hmmm! One area I've never delved into. Any tips on recalibration reddragon? My other PS2 could definately do with a little attention in that respect. I can then let you know whether or not the matrix infinity chip works too!

take the top of the PS2 case off and unscrew the 4 tiny screws on top of the dvd drive so you can take the top of that off and see the laser. you can plug in your PS2 and power it up to eject the tray, then switch the power off so that the dvd tray is sticking out, giving you better access.

at the back of the PS2 you should see a white cog. using a small flat headed screwdriver you can slowly turn this 1 click at a time either clockwise or anti-clockwise. make sure you mark or memorise its starting location so you can always go back. 1 click makes a lot of difference so its best to turn it 1 click, then put the lid on the dvd tray and test it. make sure you have 1 of every kind of disk handy, ie 1 original PS2 game, 1 backup PS2, 1 original PS1, 1 backup PS1, a movie, and a dual layer PS2 game if you have one (and your DL backup of GT4 if thats what you're trying to get working). make sure you get the white cog to a position where all of these work consistently (ie try each of them several times) before being satisfied with it and screwing the PS2 shut.

basically it seems like there is a 'sweet spot' with the white cog where your PS2 will read anything. moving in either direction from this will result in poorer reading (like first it will stop reading DL media, then some DVD-R, then DVDs altogether). if you've memorised the starting location then don't be afraid to turn the cog like 90 degrees or something, then test it. if it doesnt work, at least you'll know where NOT to put it. as you progress you can move in smaller and smaller steps as you fine tune it.
its a tedious job and can take hours, but it is worth it in the end to know your PS2 is working optimally

(there's also a tiny torx screw on the laser component itself that can be adjusted, but i find this is the more delicate and therefore easier to screw up part of laser calibration, so if you can get everything working by adjusting the white cog then leave the tiny screw alone)

there are tutorials on this you can find by searching on the net, but those are my notes based on what i've done and what's worked for me. spent an hour or so on this the other night and got GT4 working when it wouldnt play before, so was worth it for me!

Thx for tips reddragon. Yeah both my backups work on v7 with matrix infinity too! (Datasafe and Verbatim)

@ SS2006 Guide for HDD is somewhere back on this thread. L-Burna and Toolboy both had results with this if I remember correctly. As for DVD-5 I think its probably not gonna happen without losing a great deal of the program (As we've already seen with some of the nuked versions floating around on the net). I could be wrong though, if someone could work out a way of compressing the FMVs and losing some of the bloat, then it's just a matter of shifting the disk checks!

DVD-9 is working great with Toxics dual-layer disk patch, using DVD Decrypter. See reddragon's guide above.

Anyone wanting to buy a d/layer burner in Australia have a look at Apus Auctions on ebay.$18 postage+whatever you pay for the burner.Got a Benq DW1620 (has dvd-rom bitsetting) for $62.50+ the $18 postage total $80.50.
They have quite a few in black and also the off white colour.
