I dont know if this means much but I was a little inspired by this dvd5 thing.. I had three files in my gt4 backup folder: .mds, I00, I01. the mds was 9kb the .I00 file was 4.2g and the I01 file was 1.3g. I have already backed up my gt4 on verbatim dvd+r dl and all works perfectly.

I decided to rename the I00 file as this was obviously the biggest and I thought the guts of the game to ".MDS" I then opened decrypter and used the renamed I00 file (now .MDS) as the source file. Now remember my original backup has already been patched (I patched the .mds when I burnt the dvd+r dl so I tried to patch the new .mds and it said failed (thus meaning it's already patched). I then burnt the new .mds on a dvd 5 at 1X .

Now heres the interesting part I put it in the PS2 and it booted right up to the accessing the memory card (disc in corner icon) and hung (forever, no disc noise I knew this was going to happen) I thought well it's screwed, but I then thought hell might put the dvd+r dl back in (backup). It started as normal with the opening movie right up to the game access screen (all the races, home, buy cars) i then put the dvd5 back in and have been playing ever since on the dvd5. I know that I have to use the dvd9 to boot but I can play the dvd5 no worries with medium (quite bearable) loading times and I have so far had no problems with playing any of the races I have accessed. I know some might think it foolish to be swapping discs (once only) but I dont intend to play it like this, but what is interesting is it will play from the dvd5. I am using an imation dvd-r 4.7g disc (it's all I have left.) So my next questions is whats missing, what stops it loading when all the info is there (well nearly all of it). When it's loading it starts just like the dvd9 (toxic logo and all) but it hangs at the memory card load (it does actually load the memory card info). I cant remember if this was covered in the original thread "Official gt4" but I can play the dvd5 without swapping. I have not have to put the dvd9 back in yet!!! I have only played about three races (all the nissan gtr cups are nearly mine) on the dvd5 plus I raced a couple of beginner races to test it out but no lock ups yet.. Does this mean (maybe) if you have the original game and you back it up, then patch it with the toxic patch and burn it on the dvd5 that you will only ever have to use your original as a boot disc??? Some might say "silly" but what if you dont have a dual layer burner, this could be a solution. Could it work with swap magic!!!

Some body kill me if this has been covered and sorry for the waste of space if so.

This is weird, when i tried to apply the toxic dual layer patch to the iso file it said "Error: Not a dual layer disk", i opened this file with apache2 and checked to see if i can switch layers and it did, so why does the toxic dual layer patcher say its not a dual layered disk? i downloaded this file from the net "Gran Turismo 4 - PS2 - www.bubbas-world.com" its a torrent file and the iso file is 4.94GB and i'm sure its NTSC. Has anyone else had this sort of problem? I would have used my original GT4 disc but it got destroyed by my lil bro so now i have to download it.

Looking at what alkohol did I got to thinking if DVD Decrypter stopped at 95% what if rebuilding the iso (isobust and cdvdgen)would make DVD Decrypter reach 100%?

Can anyone confirm alkohol's method works? It will probably crash someday won't it? Don't care if it would, this game is so huge i probably won't finish it at all. ;-)
Like I said; I wouldn't even "dare" to reply or post it in here, if I didn't made a successful backed up in the first place. I knew from the start that if I posted this, it's obvious that some people won't believe it, or thinking it's all BS. Apparently, for some unknown reason I got a successful backed up on a DVD5 disc. The only downside is that it's not "100%" write/burned on the DVD5, DVD Decrypter would write from start 0% to 95% then finalized the disc, at least that's what it did to mine.

Again, like I said; at first, I was worried because DVD Decrypter gave me a "warning of not enough space on the disc," then I click YES, and burn it anyway. DVD Decrypter stop at 95% then it just finalized with a successfully completed on the back up disc. I did this on a Fuji DVD+R disc mainly because of my Swap Magic 3.6 Plus won't boot up my Verbatim 2.4 DVD+R DL backed up only.

To my knowledge, yes..... it boot up my DVD5 backed up using Swap Magic 3.6 and I can play it beautifully. At this moment, it plays great, no freezing, no choppy pixel, nada issue yet, but I'll keep my fingers cross.

@sharky22

You need to patch the original game backup. The torrent files are sometimes incomplete. The original is 5.6g and the patch searches for a certain file that is found on one of the original two layers
I would suggest you at least hire the game to back it up, keep the damaged original and make a backup of the hired game to you hard drive. Patch the backup with the toxic patch and then burn to dvd+r-dl. Forget the torrents.

I did try alkohol's method but Decryptor wouldn't let me burn the disk. After telling it I want to burn anyway, I get a disk I/O Error. I'm sure it's just my disks. Or it could be hardware, or settings in Decryptor.

Had one little thought. If I could truncate the iso down to the size of a DVD-5, meaning, if I could remove some of the end of the file, would that then be close to replicating alkohol's results? As I said just a thought. Might as well try it, I got plenty of DVD-5s left!!!!

the method doesn't work ... i patched the game and then burnt to verbatim dvd+r ... it started up and ran through the entire intro movie ... but then it froze up at the loading screen ... its been loading right now for like 5 minutes or so; so its safe to assume the method kinda won't work

OK yeah I got another coaster. brilliant FMV though eh? I think what we need to look at is extracting and downsizing the FMV sequences, although from what I've heard, extracting from gt4.vol etc is proving to be very hard due to encryption.

been a while since i read any gt4 posts as i pretty much gave up trying to back it up a while ago now so im a bit behind with whats been happening in this subject.

Moufa-man have you applied the patch as described in page 2 of this thread? If so what kind of modchip do you have? What model PS2? Book type is ok so no probs with your burner. Your DVD looks bigger than my one but that's probably just down to the version of the game.

Just in case anyone wants to know, I tried burning with Ridisc Media from a local comp shop which were £2.75 and seem ok so far. This is the stats:

First let me thank you for repling simpsim1.

Now here is what I know:

I have messiah chip, but don't know which version(most likely 2).

I have bought my ps2 june 2002 and chiped it sometime that month.

I live in Greece, so my gt4 is PAL.

I did patch the iso using the toxic patcher.

My ps2 plays the original gt4 and mgs2substance, so it plays dual layer dvds.

Do you think that my backup should work?

Can you tell me of a programme to use to backup gt4 after I mount it using alcohol? This method was discussed in the previous topic so I can make a dvd5 with the first layer of gt4 and when the game starts to switch it with my dual layer backup.

Forgive my english.
Thank you for answering.

Quote:1) get DVD Decrypter, get toxics patch
2) make an iso of the game using DVD Decrypter (iso -> read mode)
3) patch the iso with toxics patcher
(4) change the book type to dvd-rom. this may not be necessary as people have reported success with the book type set to DVD+R DL, but to do it, right click on your dvd writer in DVD Decrypter and select 'Change Book Type', click the tab for the manufacturer of your writer, under 'Change For' select 'For DVD+R DL media' and under 'New Setting' select 'DVD-ROM' then click ok)
5) burn the image to disk (iso -> write mode)

Crowy, your method works for me.

Before any of you go bashing or spitting at me straight up, I'll tell you what, I hate to lie, I wouldn't dare to if I didn't have any success on this game so called GT4, and for some odd reason I made a success back up on a DVD5.

Alright peeps, for whatever reason I've made a success backed up with DVD Decrypter using a FUJI DVD+R 4.7GB (Manufacture ID: YUDEN000 T02, MADE IN JAPAN) by following the above steps, except I "didn't" do step #4 only. Yes...it's TRUE and I am "NOT" bullshiting anyone period. I was playing it for like 1 hr, still "NO FREEZE" yet. I'll keep my fingers cross for now. Anyways, my first backed up with the VERBATIM 2.4 DVD+R DL was successfully completed by following the above instructions. However, my SWAP MAGIC 3.6 PLUS won't boot it because it's a DL media. Therefore, I come up with this crazy method to just back it up on a DVD5 just to try and see what's the result. After DVD Decrypter "READ", it went to my c:\GranTourismo4.ISO - I then put my Fuji DVD+R in my Sony 710a BYX4 and click "WRITE" in DVD Decrypter, it pop up a window saying "there is not enough space, do you want to continue/write?", I just click "YES" and it did it. However, I noticed it only went up to 95% or something of writing and then Decrypter just finalized the disc, instead of going all the way to 100%. I thought it was a "coaster" at first, but decided to give my SWAP MAGIC 3.6 PLUS a shot, and boy......was I surprised, it boot up right away. Thank GOD....!!!!

NOTE: Just so you all know, I'm not an expert with games and all, but if I remembered it correctly, after you've patch the Toxic patch with with GT4.ISO, and when you're ready to burn on DVD Decrypter, if you browse for the same file C:\GT4.ISO, DVD Decrypter won't let you burn it, it says the right file is the .MDS -- this is kind of weird to me, because it did this twice to me when I backed up on a DL and SL DVD+R.
i tried to do the same thing, but the write prossese stops at 83%. i dint even reach the 95%. could you please give some more info? i ripped the game with dvddecrypter and patched the ISO file (nto the MDS). then opened DvdDecrypter and opened the image. as you have already said, it automatically selects the MDS file. not the ISO. first time i wrote the image, i used the iso and reached the 83% (at 4.700 mb aproximately). then tried the iso image on it own. again the same thing happened. how did you manage to reach 95%? did you do anything else? both copies load succesfully with Swap Magic 3.6 but the game freazes after 2-3 screens with logos of the game. please help.

wierd. I got an NTSC-U iso of it (4.94 gb) and I rebuilt it. The output iso was 2.49 gb, so I burned it and ran it. I got the warning screen, then it faded out and nothing loaded. Anyone go through this?

I burned the Toxic patched ISO with a DVD-R and DVD Decrypter and I can see the intro sequence too, with the game crashing at the main menu. I loaded this with Swap Magic 3.3 by the way.

I think it's just a matter of someone creating an extractor for the big file in the .iso and replacing some of the movies and stuff with 1kb files, same stuff that was done with God of War.

Anyone have any idea about how exactly to do this though? What is the file size of your guys' .ISOs? I have a PAL version with other languages so it's larger.

Hi,
I've got a NEC 3520A and tried to backup GT4 with no sucess...
I've made the ISO with DVD Decrypter (ISO -> Read).
Next applied the Toxic DL Patch v1.0.
Next burn the image with DVD Decrypter (ISO -> Write).
I've made the first copy without changing the book type in a Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X and it didn't work on my modded PS2 (SCPH-30004R - v5 with Messiah).
Next I burn a 2nd copy by changing the book type (NEC - DVD+R DL - DVD-Rom) and still it doesn't work.

What can it be happening?

sharky your just a blink away from getting banned. I've warned you twice before about piracy. Requesting images is against forum rules whether you have the original or not.

Your three strikes were up with this one but I'm giving you one more chance champ. A word of advice too, arguing the semantics of piracy with me is a real bad idea.
