DAMN!!

I burnt the game on a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc with my Pioneer 109 and the game didnt boot. I did the instructions as mentioned to rip the game then apply the patch then change the booktype (which i couldnt do since the 109 doesnt do that) then burnt the .iso. Tested it in my V7 PS2 the game goes to the browser screen for like 1 second then goes into the red screen (please insert PS2 disc one).

Is there any way i can fix the game without burning on another DL becuase it cost me AU$10.

@sick_unit,
Probably your chip:(
If you have a friend with a ps2 with a different chip try it in his.
Your backup is probably ok.

Magic 3.1 works on V8 I can vouch for that personally. I think its probably more likely that the reason you are getting a RSOD (Red Screen Of Death) is mentioned in the README file in the patch, namely the book type of your DVD Writer. Some chips seem to be a little more fussy than others as to what types of disks they read.

I have been reliably informed peeps that the old magic III chips WILL NOT WORK. So if you have one of these, they do not recognise dual layer disks properly at all. Sick_unit, do you have to hold the reset button down to play the original game? Apparently a couple of others don't work either, but I don't have names on hand yet.

simpsim1, when playing the original i have to hold the reset button until the blue light turns on and it then goes to the browser screen for about 1 second then loads into the game.

Ive been reading that Pioneer 109's automatically change the booktype so there is no need to do that so i dont think its becuase of that its becuase of an old modchip.

I also had trouble with booting Fifa Street the exact same thing happened with whats happening with GT4. I think my modchip is getting old i might have to upgrade.

Well you can probably guess I am new here.

I think the forum is great a lot of information a little scattered I guess but I am not put out of my way to read a little.

I am a swapdisk user (v3.6) made a DL backup of the original on my LG recorder and ofcourse discovered it didnt work. (from the forum I gather because swapdisk doesnt support DL disks).

Out of morbid curiosity and realising that the DVD 5 solution for the game is seeming unlikely (dont stop trying though) I figured I would try the process described in here for making a semi-working DVD 5 as a boot disk and then changing to the DVD 9 DL disk. I dont know if it will work but I wanted some more coasters anyway.

I did the extraction with DVD Decrypter - patched the ISO file with Toxic's patch. Mounted the drive with alcohol and am now stuck because I have neither cyberlink powerproducer or ulead dvd (I cant remember the title exactly)

What these programs did from my understanding was faill to understand that the mounted volume was from a dual layer disk and ended up copying 3.09 GB that worked somehow. Does anyone know of another program that would work here? Nero doesnt and neither does DVD Decrypter (obviously). So any ideas so that I can progress to the next step?

Just to be clear in terms of my equipment I have an new Slim PS2 NO modchip (would like to keep it that way given the choice) and Swapmagic 3.6.

So any ideas which program would work?

Thanks in advance and excuse the long post... will try to keep them smaller in the future!

@sick_unit,
Do some research b4 you get another chip.
There are quite a few on the market now some good some not so good.
I spent nearly a month changing my mind back and forth between different chips but in the end chose a ghost2.These are firmware upgradable like the other good chips available.It's in a v9 silver ps2 and plays everything
without having to press reset twice/hold triangle etc.I just put in the disc and it automatically detects the type of disc and loads it.So far gt4 backup/ps1 backup/ps2 backup/dvd backup/dvd backup on dvd+rw/ps2 backup on dvd+rw and of course all original games load flawlessly.This chip was fitted by a guy who has been doing this for years(a friend of mine had his
ps2 fitted with a gold ripper2 by the same guy around 2 years ago,(yes his plays gt4 backup as well)and his hasn't missed a beat.The only thing is he has to press reset twice to load ps1 backups and other certain routines to load dvd etc.Chip + fitting was $170 AUS.This comes with 2 year warranty.Have a look here if your interested: http://www.ghost2.net/home.php?sid=1&a=ok

@Alex_K,
If you burn with DVD Decrypter to dvd5 it will let you but it will warn you that it won't fit.I tried this (on a dvd+rw) out of curiosity then it on my ps2.It booted to the memory card option so I put in my name then hit exit.After that it crashed.You could try this but have my doubt's if it will run the dvd9 after you boot with the dvd5.(Not sure if swap magic will even boot the incomplete dvd5:(

You are probably right that it wont work but I reckon i will try it anyway. The problem with the writing software is that People have tried those progs and found them faulty in a way that works. DVD Decrypter doesnt have the same fault...

Anyone else know another program?

From what I've seen there is a VOL extractor and VOL reconstructor for GT3. So surely it must be possible for one to be made for GT4 or perhaps even use the GT£ one on GT4?

Ya. I tried burning the 5 GIG image to a DVD5, and DVD Decrypter let me burn it to 83%.

Still keeping thumbs crossed for a GT4 extractor and rebuilder for DVD5! Vroom! Vroom!

crowy, im from Aus as well where exaclty are you located at?

and about the Booktype in DVD Decrypter, when i put the game in it says DVD+R DL. I have a Pioneer 109 and you cant change it but ive seen other people with a Pio 109 who have left it at DVD+R DL and the game works. I think the Pio 109 changes it by itself.

Sick_unit your chip is most likely to be the Magic III unfortunately, going on what you've said. Incidently if you want another modchip recommendation, the DMS4 solderless is a good idea if you like tinkering with your box yourself. I put one in for someone last week and found it surprisingly straightforward. It's upgradable too! Just a matter of opinion though. As for myself, I'm happy for now with my magic 3.1, until such time as I really need to upgrade.

@Sick_unit there is one trick you can try.
1. make iso of layer-0 using apache (patched with toxic). Apache available from http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=mis.html
2. burn with decryptor on dvd-5
3. make yourself slide card (plenty of sites that tell you how)
4. boot with DVD-5 until screen appears that says "Sony computer entertainment usa" appears
5. IMMEDIATELY open drawer using slide card and swap with your DL Backup
6. Should now continue to load.

If disk makes a lot of whirring noise and doesn't load, you may need to focus the laser a bit, not something to be undertaken lightly though so be warned.

This method has not been tried by me yet but others have had success with it. Might be interesting to see if a 3 way swapmagic trick might work. Feedback anyone?

Nero 6 Reloaded has an option to specify the amount of overburn on a DVD and Nero CD/DVD speed info has an overburn test. I know the whole lot still wouldnt fit on but if you could burn the original ISO to a DVD5 and let it get a little further than normal with overburn and make an ISO of the DVD5 with DVD Decrypter and reburn it. It might include enough of the second file to continue. But is suppose the only real way is to get a .vol extractor.

Long winded I know but is it worth a try?

Worth a try if you have a cheap DVD to try it with. Might get past 83%. In fact, another guy on one of these threads said he tried something similar and it worked, but that's only 1 report I've seen.

Yup, the .VOL extractor would be cool

I tried using Nero's overburn simulator on a blank DVD-R but it says my DVD writer doesnt support overburning.

First attempt at burning the DL GT4 was a success. Here's the details:

PS2 slim with Matrix MX4

Used a G5 with Toast 6.1 to create a disk image from the original. Patched with the toxic patcher and burned with Toast to a Verbatim DL DVD at 2x. Works perfectly every time.

Don't know if this will help anyone, but I can confirm using these tools and md chip works perfectly every time.
