@ everyone,
If you are one of the many experimenting with dvd5, try backing up one of your other dvd5 games onto dvd+rw.Set the booktype to dvd-rom if possible.
If your backup works, from now on use the dvd+rw for your experiments.(That's what I'm doing and haven't had to worry about coasters:)

Just quickly:
1. can you get DVD+RW D/L (rewritables)?

2. i've read about there being a demo of GT4 (i think it might be jap only but i'm not sure), if this has any of the fmv's or music from the actual game on could the original and demo .vol files be compared to help locate the music and fmv files.

Shot in the dark I know but..... worth a try???

@dakillz

Answer 1. Not yet.

Answer 2. I Think the filesystems are different. There was actually a kit somewhere for the demo, to crack the trial I think. Might have to try and find a torrent to try it out. Shame though, before GT4 came out proper, I saw a copy of this on my newsserver but didn't get it coz it was Japanese. Oh well!

i hear tht crowy!,put my dms3 in myself, nearly fragged my brand new ps2 tho (dropped a piece of hot solder on the video decoder chip pins!),don't attempt unless you are a very good solderer and have all the tools to do it (if you want an idea as to what you're gonna be soldering, take your mobile phone apart, find the smallest circuit on the cell chip and thats approximately the size you'll be soldering)...be warned!
gonna try joining the .vol files and extracting them that way, could be the fact that its one split file originally, and needs to be joined to identify as a legitimate file.
anybody know if any other game uses .vol files?,
also has anybody tried looking at the .img file of other dual layer games(i haven't got one!) to compare structure (i assume they all use the same code to start off the cdvd driver in the ps2)

Hummmmm... I guess "no one" has not been able to successfully backed up on a fully working DVD5 disc yet. I will say this and I will say it again, Yes... I've got an "83%" fully working on a DVD5 disc backing up with DVD Decrypter. For the last time, "I am NOT bullshiting anyone." However, the only "downside" is that I can't get to the "main menu" i.e. "arcade mode, 2 players, etc." but I can go and play everything else including getting all my "licenses, go to my garage, international races, test drive, buy/sell car, upgrade/tune up my car's performance, change oil, etc."

I did another backed up to test and this time I follow everything closely while DVD Decrypter write and unfortunately it stops at 83%, then it just finalized the disc. However, it still plays and reads flawlessly on my PS2 v9 with Swap Magic 3.6 plus. So, if I remembered it correctly, my earlier response said somewhere like 90% -- this may be due to the fact that I was a bit "buzz and drunk" that day, and perhaps the numbers were a bit blurry to me. So, I apologize for the incorrect percentage alright people. Evidently, the 83% was "right" and I am able to play without any glitch yet, still crossing my fingers. I guess I will play as far as I can and as long as I can and see what's up. I'll be back to let y'all know how it goes alright.

By the way, I did another method using something similar to "g.o.w" but it failed to extract the second time around, thus this method was aborted.

Just open your iop300 file with hex workshop then save it in your gt4 directory.
IML2ISO is a good program to convert your iml to iso.

[qoute from Crowy]
1) get DVD Decrypter, get toxics patch
2) make an iso of the game using DVD Decrypter (iso -> read mode)
3) patch the iso with toxics patcher
(4) change the book type to dvd-rom. this may not be necessary as people have reported success with the book type set to DVD+R DL, but to do it, right click on your dvd writer in DVD Decrypter and select 'Change Book Type', click the tab for the manufacturer of your writer, under 'Change For' select 'For DVD+R DL media' and under 'New Setting' select 'DVD-ROM' then click ok)
5) burn the image to disk (iso -> write mode)
6)BURN AT 1X OR 2X

Does it become possible only by changing the burning soft?
Is there any example which was successful in playing in Messiah's user?

For the time being, I will try to rip with DvdDecrypter.

Is there any point which should otherwise be improved?

Sorry for my bad English.

alkohol's does have a silver lining....i was able to boot to the map screen with the original and begin playing with the back up..i'm making another image of gt4 now while playing to try the iopr.img again..i think there are checks that are in this img file that aren't allowing a full load...if you open hew workshop(thanks to crowy) and scroll through the byte you will see that there are "warning" and "illegal" and "media" implemented into the coding...if only can be erased..i tried to make back up of the .img but it kep coming out as a text file...any ideas?

seems that there are no checks at all by the sounds of it,if you can get the game to read a dvd5 past the sony..blah blah screen then it can't have any checks as it is just reading as much of the .voll 1 file,i'd like to know what dvd-decrypter gives you when you extract it again after making the dvd5(ie.does it give you the same size for the .vol file and what size is the .vol 1 file if any),this is looking a bit more promising!

When I Read the Image,What should be done with an arrangement of DVD Decrypter?

Is what is necessary just to read in the default state?
Is what is necessary just to push the Decrypt button, supposing it is good by a default?

Is it necessary to change the setting?
If changing is necessary, please teach me the setting.

sorry. my bad English. Somebody teach me.

toshiki19,

Put your original GT4 into DVD-ROM drive
Put blank media DVD-R/+R in DVD Burner (use high quality media like FUJi, MAXELL, TY, VERBATIM or SONY)
Open up "DVD Decrypter", click MODE, then ISO, then READ
Choose your "source" and then "destination" --> make it on your HD.
Then "Decrypt" (on the ARROW between the burner and disc image icon)
Wait until it's successfully completed
click MODE, ISO, then WRITE, then choose your "source" and "destination" again
(NOTE: before you burn/write, make sure you change your "booktype" into DVD-ROM, by right click on the destination burner image.)
DVD Decrypter will give you an "error of not enough space on the DVD-R/+R blank, do you want to burn it anyway?" click on YES.... and burn it.
Hopefully you'll somehow get it to somewhere 83% - 85%, let DVD Decrypter finalized the disc.
Now you should have a DVD5 version, but "not" completely 100% from the original

I was able to back up an 83% successfully working on a DVD5 disc using FUJI 8X DVD+R (made in Japan blank), and I can play it flawlessly nearly everything, except I can't get to the "main menu, i.e. 2 players versus mode, arcade mode, etc." However, I can go to my "garage, test drive, get all my license, race at international races, change oil, upgrade my car's performance, sell/buy car." So far I've been playing pretty long and "have not" experienced any freezing issue yet. Like I said; I'll keep continue playing until as far as I can get and see what's missing on my DVD5 disc. For the last time, this is not a 100% completed as the original GT4 -- it is only 83%, but it's working perfectly.

@Toshiki19. In DVD Decrypter, Click the MODE Menu, click on ISO-Read.
Click the burn symbol at the bottom and DVD Decrypter should start ripping the disk.

The Patch should be then applied at this stage to the .mds OR the .iso file that DVD Decrypter creates (Either one can be patched but not both).

To write disk in DVD Decrypter, Click MODE and then ISO-Write. Choose the IMAGE.MDS file (IMAGE being the name of your disk), Check your book type using the book symbol in the bottom right hand corner. It should write as DVD-ROM. If not, change it. Choose your speed (2.4x is only one supported on my drive. The info window in DVD Decrypter gives you more info on the disk inserted) and click the burn symbol. Then just wait for 25 minutes or so!!

OK, Alkohols guide is better than mine lol.

We still need to see a readout of DVD Decrypter on that disk you made Alkohol. Will give us some understanding on how yours has worked.

toshiki19, first
open dvd-decrypter,select source(your game in the drive)
select destination(where you want the iso),then press the green arrow/disk at the bottom, and wait, after it has completed, patch the iso with the toxic patch, burn the iso with dvd-decrypter at the lowest possible speed onto a dual layer disk(doesn't matter about any mds/mdf files that are there, ignore them),if it doesn't burn(gives you an error code) it's probably a firmware problem(which you can right click on the drive and choose the last option "check for firmware updates)..or you've got a shite disk (shite means really bad!),if it burns ok,check it on your pc with apache(available from www.alucard.cc )to make sure it's burnt both layers correctly,or just whack it in your ps2 and it should work, red screen of death is a good sign your chip don't support it and it will not work with swap magic,if you do get a rsod, try it on another ps2 with a mod chip that works

Alkohol I totally believe you mate. I just wanted to see the readout from your DVD Decrypter so I could see why yours went further than mine. It might also hold some key to shrinking this thing down. Just pop ya disk in the drive and give us a readout of what DVD Decrypter says. As I said it's for info purposes rather than us not trusting you.
