DragonFun - I've tried it without patching with Toxic, doesn't work. Apparently "pressed" (mass commercially produced Dual layer DVD's) have a different read setup than "burned" Dual Layer DVD's. The PS2 doesn't seem to read a burned dual layer DVD. The Toxic patch gives the burned dual layer DVD the appearance of a pressed dual layer DVD to the PS2. Race on!

I have an old ps2 with a magic 3 chip. I have patched the GT4 .iso file and was about to burn it on a DL disc but heard that my chip wont run the burnt game. In order to play the orginal GT4 i have to hold the power button down, i think this disables the chip. can anyone tell me for sure if my burnt copy of the game will work with this chip?

@tez12,Think you're out of luck with the d/layer backup.
Magic 3 doesn't support dual layer.
You could try the dvd5 method if arcade mode isn't neccessary.

first you will need a save point on your memory card, second probably want to try this on a dvd+r...and the third you will burn this game as a normal backup(w/DVD Decrypter) but have "volume lock" and "burn-proof" unchecked(they are under the settings menu)...you will get a message stating that it is too big...blah blah blah...don't worry about it go ahead with the burn...about 83%-88% you will get another message...click yes...wait a minute...then the disk should finalize and presto chango you have a backup(w/o the arcade)....some say it is better to patch the iso before backing up ..but i didn't have too...but you might want to just to be on the safe side...good luck

** ALKOHOL & ZOEYCHICO COMBO METHOD TO SUCCESSFULLY BACK UP "GT4" WITH 100% ON A DVD5 **

01) Using DVD Decrypter to "decrypt" iso file into HD using "ALKOHOL's " Settings on DVD Decrypter.<---- as posted earlier in this thread.
A) put original game into dvd-rom drive
B) put blank DVD-R/+R (use good media such as FUJI, MAXELL & VERBATIM) in dvd burner
C) choose MODE, ISO, READ R (note: again, make sure to check your "settings" in DVD Decrypter)
D) choose your "source" and "destination" <-- make a folder in C: drive or HD in prior to this: example (NEW GT4BACKUP) and browse to this folder.
E) click on "Decrypt" on DVD Decrypter, now wait 20 - 25 minutes until it finished.

02) Open up WinHex 12.25 or go here http://www.x-ways.net/winhex/index-m.html and down load it.
A) click on FILE, OPEN and browse to the folder or "NEW GT4BACKUP" you created earlier with DVD Decrypter, then OPEN it. (NOTE: GT4BACKUP has 4.9GB)
B) now WinHex will display tons of numbers & codes, but don't do anything and the name should say something like "GranTurismo4.ISO"
C) click on "TOOLs" on WinHex, File Tools, then "Split" and browse to your NEW GT4BACKUP or folder you created, then hit SPLIT.
D) make your split file equal 4.3GB when a small box appear and hit OK, then save it under a new name like "REBUILD GT4" so you won't get confuse with the previous one.
E) click on "SAVE" and WinHex should automatically compress the original GT4.ISO 4.9GB to a new 4.3GB REBUILD GT4 (you created) <--- this takes about 8 - 9 minutes.
F) when it gets to 90% or something it will ask you to save or name it again with a very samll file: just name it "small or junk" you won't need this anyway
G) sit and wait until it gets to 100% and completed, EXIT out.
H) now go to your newly 4.3 REBUILD GT4 file and rename it "REBUILD GT4.ISO" hit [ENTER]

3) Open up DVD Decrypter again, MODE, ISO, WRITE
A) choose your "source" <--- browse the your newly REBUILD GT4.ISO which you renamed it on step (H)
B) choose your "destination" <--- your dvd burner (make sure you have a good blank media in drive)
C) and now choose your burn speed at no higher than 4X, and just back it up or burn it.... sit and wait until its finished. Presto.... you're done.

3A)
D) put Swap Magic 3.6 into PS2, let it loads to Main Menu page
E) open up Flip Top and take out Swap Magic 3.6
F) put DVD5 backed up of 100% GT4 in, and close Flip Top
G) hit [X] to boot.......and now it should load
If it helps I used this method with a DVD-R single layer disc and it worked (without arcade mode) the only difference is that I patched my ISO of the game using ToxicDualLayerPatcher-v1.0 before proceeding onto step 2)

Hope this helps anyone wishing to copy GT4 onto a DVD-R(single layer),it can be done.

P.S. I turned off the intro movie using my original GT4 and have a save file at the garage

Hi... This is my problem: Becouse I didnt have a time to burn it normally (I did must return it to my friend). I select to burn it into image (using Nero 6.6.0.8) (source drive was my Pioneer DVR-109 1.50 and the destination was Nero image Recorder).Upon succesiful back-up I have two files onto my HDD (two files, becouse my File system is FAT32). First is GT4.NRG(3.99GB) and the second one is GT4.NRG.001(927MB). When I mount this image into Nero Virtual Drive the Nero Info Tool say:
------------------------------
Type: DVD-R
Capacity: 4.95GB
Layers: 1
File System: ISO9660, UDF
Title: GRANTURISMO4
Date: 27. January 2005
Publisher: Seca
Application: Toxic Rulez
-------------------------------

My questions are:
1. Can I use this image (2 files) to burn in using DVD Decrypter onto DVD5 (DVD-R, Verbatim) disc?
2. If I can, how? I read 6 ways to do that, and I am really CONFUSED.

---
Please, I need this answer quickly....

thanx for ur help!

@tez12. Yeah, there's big problems with Magic III chip. It won't even boot DVD+R disks let alone DVD+R DL disks.

The only way you'll get a working backup is to use the DVD-5 version we're all talking about.. and on a DVD-R. This version incidentally will work on just about any modded PS2 (Or unmodded with swap magic - this is the only version that works with SM).

I made my version using HJSplit. I found it easier than hex editing and the results are just the same.

1. Extract image using DVD Decrypter (ISO read mode).
2. Apply Toxic patch.
3. Open HJSplit and click "Split".
4. Click "Input File" and browse to your iso file.
5. Change the split file size to 4460 and the dropdown selector next to it to Mbytes.
6. Click "Start".
7. After a few minutes you'll get two files in the same directory as the original file, one ending .001 and one .002. Just rename the .001 file to image.iso (Name not important as long as it's .iso and not the same as the original file). You can safely delete the .002 file.
8. Burn image.iso to DVD-5 using DVD Decrypter (ISO write mode).

As already mentioned in this thread, you need a saved game from somewhere in GT mode for this to work, otherwise it freezes after the opening movie. It may also help to disable the intro movie in the options as well.

@ArcanuS_2. You have Toxic patched version already so you should be able to burn it with Nero onto a Dual Layer. DVD Decrpyter only works with ISOs so you'll not be able to use this. I think you might have a problem getting this onto DVD-5 in this format too. Not impossible, but a bit long winded for me to get into on this thread.

2 simpsim1:But I do not want to burn it onto DVD-9. Only onto DVD-5. Also, DVD Decr. can use many types of images ;) . And.. I think I dont use patched version, but I am not sure.

Sorry ArcanuS_2, my bad!! yeah you should be able to use decrypter on an NRG file, but I think you will have to use a DVD+R rather than a minus if you just want to use Decrypter (88% version). If you want to use DVD-R you could try using a file splitting method on the first NRG file using a method such as the one I used above (Just call your file image.nrg or something like that), because I believe that the Nero images are pretty similar to ISOs.

EDIT: Looking into this further, there might be another way to get an ISO of the whole thing. Try mounting your image on a virtual drive, such as Nero Image Drive, or Alcohol and use decrypter in iso read mode to get the ISO. Being fat32, you'll get 2 files from that too (NTFS is better for large files) so let me know what you get if you try it.

Your backup is definately patched by the way. Your Nero Info Tool readout says Toxic Rulez instead of PLAYSTATION! Toxic's little trademark left behind to identify their handywork. So you can skip step 2 if you use my method above.

If anyone wants HJSplit, you can get a copy from http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

@tez12,
If you flash your drive with piodata firmware here:
http://www.piodata.com/firmware-updates/DVR108DX_FW118EU.zip
You will be able to change the booktype of your drive to burn dvd+r as dvd-rom.Then burn your image with DVD Decrypter using the 83-88% method.

@tez12,
if DVD Decrypter won't let you burn you must be using dvd-r.When you use dvd+r it will warn you there is not enough space but will ask if you want to continue, just click yes.If your'e worried about flashing your drive search for other forums elsewhere to read anything that might concern you.Type:flashing pioneer 109 or something like that in your search bar.

thanks again dude i made a good copy using alkohol and that other dudes method, it works up until after it says "$ony entertainment presents" then i see a little picture of a memory card in the top right hand corner but then i just get a black screen. i know for sure that i have a saved game on there but is it a must to turn off the intro then save the game again on the orignal? if i get this far will it work for sure?

@tez12. Your save needs to be from within GT mode (your garage for example). The initial autosave on it's own is not good enough.

Not sure what version you're using but it might help to disable the intro movie in misc options.

Of course you could download a save if you wanted... instructions on how to do this are further back on this thread. It's better to have your own though because you get to start from scratch. It spoils the fun a bit with these cheat saves.

simpsim1, you are the man! You've fighted and fighted even though everyone left it pass by.

You know that there's a program that extracts the volume file of GT3, and another tool that rebuilds everything. So my point is simple: extract the vol of Gt4, change the movies .pss files, and then rebuild the vol file again. and update the new .vol file to the .ISO file of the game. Could that work?

I've searched for the tool. You can find it here. Right the first tool called GTFS - Gran Turismo v3 File System http://server2.megagames.com/ps2/ps2_guides_rip.shtml

And the rebuild tool, to rebuild the changed vol. size with the new pss files can be found if you scroll down a little and download the GT 3 [PAL] RIP Kit 1.8 MB. Then in the zip you'll get the rebuild exe file

I dont even own the Gt4 game, but i've seen your dedication to this that i thought i'd try to help even though if this doesnt work. I tried. I just thought it would be simpler to extract the .vol , edit the files in it, and then rebuild it. Let us know something later!

Tried the GT3 kit and it only partially works. Just waiting for someone to modify the code. As I said before, some of these files appear to be encrypted in a certain way that the extractor doesn't pick them up. It also doesn't handle the PSS files either. I'm hoping that the likes of sonix or darti8nt are still out there working on this cos they are the GUYS, along with toolboy and L-burna who have been totally inspirational.

Had the same problem with the access of the memory card and then the screen went blank. I made another save from the original from the garage after I had turned off the intro movie! It work fine now

@Techniks the DVD5 version only gives 83%-88% of the game so there is no way of getting a 100%copy on a DVD5(as of yet) but here is the guide for making a DVD5 without arcade mode(I nicked it from Alkohol's post,he deserves credit and so does simpsim1-great work! and everyone else who helped-I am a computer cripple compared to you guys)

01) Using DVD Decrypter to "decrypt" iso file into HD
-------------------------------------------------
A) put original game into dvd-rom drive
B) put blank DVD-R/+R (use good media such as FUJI, MAXELL & VERBATIM) in dvd burner
C) choose MODE, ISO, READ R (note: again, make sure to check your "settings" in DVD Decrypter)
D) choose your "source" and "destination" <-- make a folder in C: drive or HD in prior to this: example (NEW GT4BACKUP) and browse to this folder.
E) click on "Decrypt" on DVD Decrypter, now wait 20 - 25 minutes until it finished.
F)Patch iso file by using Toxic Dual Layer Image Patcher v1.0 obtained from http://forums.psxforum.com/download.php?id=2518

02) Open up WinHex 12.25 or go here http://www.x-ways.net/winhex/index-m.html and down load it.
----------------------------------------------------------
A) click on FILE, OPEN and browse to the folder or "NEW GT4BACKUP" you created earlier with DVD Decrypter, then OPEN it.

---------------------------------------------------------
A) choose your "source" <--- browse the your newly REBUILD GT4.ISO which you renamed it on step (H)
B) choose your "destination" <--- your dvd burner (make sure you have a good blank media in drive)
C) and now choose your burn speed at no higher than 4X, and just back it up or burn it.... sit and wait until its finished. Presto.... you're done.

4) Boot on PS2
-----------------------------------------------------------------
D) put Swap Magic DVD version into PS2, let it loads to Main Menu page
E) use slide tool/open up Flip Top and take out Swap Magic DVD version
F) put DVD5 backed up of 100% GT4 in, and close Flip Top
G) hit [X] to boot.......and now it should load

BEFORE YOU CAN PLAY USING A BACK-UP:Using the original game make a save at the garage and turn of the intro movie (option found in the settings)

hope this helps for ppl like Techniks who don't wanna read a little ;),some steps may not be required however I did this with my PAL(european) version of GT4 and burned it to a cheap 4.7GB DVD-R and it works perfectly(without arcade mode!!!!)
