@ creaky

I burned a dvd last night using pengo dvd-r ran it through KProbe ad dvdinfo and found no problems with errors. Still not confident in them but will use them until my ty2 get delivered. Maybe I need to start hanging in the dvd forums so I can get smart like you guys on backing up movies and be a big help especially on media related issues (i.e. burn logs). Nice specs on your pc as well. Money is not plentiful but I'm trying to buy a top of the line desktop that will last a few years.

@matt72, i had the same problem when i wanted to buy a new pc. My machines have to last for years at a time or more likely 'til they break, so i was real pleased that i could get this one for about £240; it's the cheapest barebone system i could find by a helluva lot, plus i needed something tiny as i haven't got space for loadsa kit; then recently i got 512MB ram for £40 which is a bargain.

I'm starting to find myself getting more into backing up and after searching this forum now I'm keeping an eye on the type of media I'm using. I also have Nero but not a fan since it seems the updates are not that great and wasted a few discs about an hour ago. Anyway I read every post regarding blank media and dvd burning/ authoring trying to improve my skills. One thing I did notice is even though some dvd-r are 16x I find burning at 2x is the best method for a novice/ beginner such as myself. Right now I'm even considering adding dvd-r blank media into my budget.

@ kivorry
I'm already trying to get as much possible out of creaky. If it wasn't for lack of dedicated time I would already being trying to re-author movies with added home made special effects.

too high a burn speed is s'posed to pose possible problems for standalaone players as they don't read at such high speeds. It's one of those techie aspects that i don't fully understand as a 16x disc can be burnt at 4x, hence the standalone player 'should' (in my humbe opinion) see the disc as nothing other than a disc that is 4x (if at all). Someone happily chip in & explain that better (or correctly) for me... :)

IMHO newer standalones do not seem to have any difficulty reading the newer media, however older standalones experience problems with the 16x disks. We are constantly updating firmware in our burners/roms to accomodate for newer disks but we do not do that with standalones. Toshiba is a big offender in that their players will not recognize all media and I read somewhere that they are finally being forced to make more compatible players. I have owned to Toshiba players, one I gave to the grandaughter, they were very up to date when I bought them yet they only play -R and they only want certain media burned with certain programs. My toshiba does not have a problem with good media but give it cheap and no dice, give it a cheap disk burned with Xcopy and it spits, give it a TY burned with CopytoDVD and it is beautiful. I know I have even had problems with my older CD players and newer disks and burn speeds. My one stereo will not play anything that is burned faster than 24x but my other stereos do not have a problem. I believe newer players are geared towards burned disks, because it has become the norm, mfr know what the public is doing and are making their product accommodating. OK I babbled on, sorry :-o

Meet the Parents - on another atrocious Bulkpaq disc - took a few attempts to copy this one ready for transfer onto a nice Verbatim disc -

and Meet the Parents on it's new Verb (did this at 4x); not too shabby..Again compare number ranges in the graphs -

Genuine TY (TYG02) 8x burnt at 8x (GG000107 code on inner hub) -

So how does this compare with your Verbs, have you become a TY convert? :~)

hmmmmmm.... i'll still have to keep feet in both camps. I think purely because the Verb's have a nicer top surface as they're the matte silver finish so are less prone to little fingers (the kids); so the Verb's would be better for them to handle i think. But the PIF scan looks better than the Verb scns. Just doing a 4x burn on a TY, then i'll post that too, then burn a load of TY at 8x, can't have them going mouldy :)

you likey creaky??? HAHAHAHA...nice scans...very close to my TY scans too~ notice when burnt @8x it's VERY smooth, with quality media of the TYS...it is NOT always necessary to burn at slower speed...that's why i tell everyone who has the 8x TYs to just burn @8x, they will hold up to the faster speeds~ :)

i tried an Imation disc last night, just to PIF scan it, and it turned out this was a RitekG03 1x. The lowest Nero could burn it was 2x, so left it for half hour. The PIF scan was actually better than any of the previous scans, the shame of it :)
Will have to post it tonight; well still won't be using anything like Imation again as you just can't guarantee the media codes you'll get, nuff said!

just remembered to post the Imation *cough cough* usually really crap *cough* media, scan -
this is apparently 1x media, which Nero would only let me burn at 2x. KProbe2 scan done at 2x also -

My faith in crappy media being crap has been restored. Am running a CRC check on the Imation disc, and yup, it's got 24 errors so far, and the crc scan is only 72% done.

'Don't go out and start buying Imation due to the PIF scan alone, please viewers'

And here when I went to WalMart they had a crapload of Imation on sale, better watch out I am sure there are going to be a bunch of people who bought them. Actually, picked up 3 more Verb dual layers, 19.88 for three and a new Sony standalone, considering the Sanyo I have hates the dual layers, but the new Sony has no problem.

OK so I just got these Memorex 16x from best buy the other day.

these are good numbers right?

Date : 6/5/2005 2:35:36 AM
Model : 1-0-0-0 SONY DVD RW DRU-720A JY01
Disc : DVD+R , CMC MAGM01 [CMC Magnetics Corporation]
Speed : Max
ECC blocks sum (PI/PIF) : 8/1
Scanned range : 0 - 2284693
Sampling count : 608
Errors : 28
PI Max : 14
PI Average : 4.98
PI Total : 418
PIF Max : 2
PIF Average : 0.89
PIF Total : 77

Or am I just getting lucky with this batch? btw the pack started out fine but after the first 10 in the pack burned fine I have had many "media errors" while using DVDClone2. seems about a 50% coaster rate. I think I may look for some of the reccommended dvdr's I have seen while cruising this site. thanks

in fact check the Imation media replies, a few replies before yours. I initially did a scan that looked excellent of an Imation disc , then separately ran a CRC check and it had a lot of CRC errors. BAD news for the burn, BAD media, get GOOD media.

as i post as often as i remember, (in my humble opinion) none of us should have to concern ourselves with media problems to the extent we do. The ppl at CMC et al should hang their heads in shame for their inferior products. God help us poor posters when dual layer media is more common, and God forbid, newer, higher capacity types of media.

lol it's obvious i need my first cup of coffee for the day :)

i'm baaaaaaaaaaaaackkkk....i know this is YOUR thread creaky, but, that CMC MAG coding sent me a runnin'~!!

@ tendaf

i dont' care if Memorex has 1x/2x/4x/8x/16x/hell 32x dvd media for all i care, if you get that dreaded CMC MAG coding, you are in for a WORLD of hurt in the future~. please get a refund for those at bestbuy, if you can...and get some GREAT media while you are there~ i personally suggest the Fuji 8x dvd+r (MADE IN JAPAN...YUDEN000T02 coding) they are authentic Taiyo Yudens OR the Verbatim 8x dvd+r (MADE IN TAIWAN will be MCC003 coding which are GREAT btw) or the Verbatim 16x if you want the cream of the crop (MCC004 coding-made in taiwan as well). :) i just noticed on your scan you are using dvd+r so, those 3 are my recommendations to pick up at bestbuy since you are gonna be there anyways~ :)

good luck to ya~

i will always recommend TY and Verbs when buying locally, bestbuy IS good for something when you need media in a hurry~ i KNOW they carry BOTH those brands~ :) Fuji 8x dvd+r(Made Im Japan-very important you look for these, DO NOT buy the made in taiwans unless you don't care about getting TYs) and Verbatim 8x or 16x DVD+r (both made in taiwan)will be MCC003 and MCC004 accordingly~ great media~

whew...i dunno how many times i've repeated myself today~ :)
