Hi, I'm pretty new at this DVD burning thing and I'm very curious about something. So far I have burned movies with several different media. I've used Verbatim, Maxell, Fuji, and TDK. They all playback on my Home DVD player, however the only brand that plays back on my portable DVD player is Verbatim. Does anyone know why? Is is the Azo technology? Is it just that the other brands are crap? Please let me know.

@Hieuly77 - i'll let the other guys answer that in more detail but it's down to compatibility and burn speed usually. Some players can be picky.

Re your media -
Verbatim - top notch as long as you don't have the CMC type media codes.
Maxell - i haven't used any but believe them all to be top notch
Fuji - i think it depends where they're from, ie what media code you have
TDK - a mixed bag as they use various manufacturers so a hit and miss as to what media codes you might have.

@hieuly

cuz the Verbatims are "special" and they have magical fairy properties to them~ :) J/k~!

anyways, i think your standalone as well as your portable find the Verbs to be highly compatible, it's just a picky player i guess, i don't find it too hard to believe that a dvd player would like the Verbs, i use them myself (8x dvd+r Verbs btw and booktyped, ALL my players will play them with ease)

regarding your other choices of media...like creaky stated, it can be a hit/miss, especially w/ the TDKs~ :) i don't really care for maxells as i would personally rate them slightly above average, but fuji as long as they MIJ, i would recommend highly as the 8x dvd+r format are Taiyo Yudens if you get the MADE IN JAPAN ones~ :)

verbatims with the MCC coding are great, as long as you are using the more recent media, not the older 4x and below types~ :)

Recommended Media:

You guys mentioned different media codes on the discs. How do you go about finding out what media codes the discs have? Which ones do I need to look out for as far as bad media codes and good ones?

use this program to identify media codes for your discs :

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

newest version and i like the new layout of it~ looks pretty~ :)

in terms of which media codes are good and which are bad...well, depends on what you consider "good" compared to what is "horrible"

ie. CMC MAG = HORRIBLE YOU GOT SCREWED BAD QUALITY MEDIA
MCC = VERY GOOD Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. (Verbatim media ID)
TYG02/TYGO3/YUDEN000T02 = my #1 choice of GREAT media Taiyo Yudens- these media codes can also be found on Fuji/Sony MADE IN JAPANs in the dvd-r format 8x=TYG02, 16x=TYGO3, and dvd+r format 8x for the YUDEN000T02 coding~:)

hope that offers you a small start in your journey of media codes and such~ :)

Burnt another of my TY 8x at 4x for the Aviator -

- none too shabby.

Dunno why it states 2x though, blummin' computers, pah!

edit- redid the scan at 4x. that big splodge at the beginning of disc is where i was multitasking during the burn(that'll teach me) and the Nero buffers dropped somewhat. I'm gonna CRC check the disc out of paranoia as haven't watched the disc yet but can always reburn if needed.

Sorry Creaky, who I don't think will benefit from this, but perhaps those on this side of the pond can ...

There's a 10% off coupon at BestBuy 'til June 18th on any one item, including blank media. Thanks to passwird.com (Is it odd that I first read the URL as passWIND.com?)

Apologies if the link / pictures (if any) / post / everything is wrong and/or posted in the wrong forum and/or ... you get it. I'm trying to get out of here for 3 months in NY and my husband thinks it's odd that I'm passing on $2.00 savings when I should be euthanizing our cat ... er ... packing.

Here's a little better scan with a TY -R 8X burned at 8X on a Pioneer DVR-109 at 8X. The PIs are a little high at the first (for a TY), but decent enough. Incidentally, the PIF limit with Kprobe 2 is 4. The 32 limit was with the original Kprobe which measured the PIF sum for 8 ECC blocks whereas kProbe 2 measures PIF for 1 ECC block. For some reason the PI rate dropped when the burner shifted from 6X to 8X. This usually doesn't happen.

I am using verbatim DVD+R because someone told me it was the best. I don't mind spending more on quality. Can someone please point out the good ones too me?
Thanks,

@kelli3222 - i just answered this exact same question of yours here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/200764#1085791 -
Quote:
@kelli3222 - as long as you are using Verbatim Datalifeplus you are using top quality already. The +R or -R format should be explained somewhere in the last 2 links i gave you.

You can download dvdinfopro (free), run it and do a media info check (2nd icon from top left in dvdinfopro) and paste your details here, then hopefully we can verify which Verbatim you have (as older ones were made by crappy manufacturers)
You're now in a good place to find the answer. Verbatim datalifeplus are my personal favourite and you'll see that if you skim thru this thread. Skim thru the over-technical bits! in here, and you should get a gist why top quality such as Verbatim datalifeplus, TY (Taiyo Yuden, but watch out for fakes, they're everywhere) and other top brands are what you should stick with. It costs no more to buy quality over no-name or inferior discs. And on that note pls look at second link in my sig

@pixiestix - the answer is in the very first post on first page..

ie
Quote:
Use this as a guideline for good discs:
PI (Parity Inner): No larger areas on the disc should exceed 280 PI errors, do not worry too much about high single spikes that exceeds 280.
PIF (Parity Outer) (ie bottom graph): No larger areas on the disc should exceed 32 PO (actually PI uncorrectable) errors, do not worry too much about high single spikes that exceeds 32

if you edit your post and replace both occurrences of IMG with img (in both lines) and the pics should show here, for now i can copy them into another window..

ps did you scan them at 4x ?, as that's apparently the best speed to scan at..

@paztelu - not bad..but....maybe you could do a CRC scan for your own peace of mind, with those discs as the PIF scans i've learnt, are not sufficient to prove that cheapy discs are to be trusted for long...

ps i will still never go near Imation again, regardless of their media code, they feature in the link in my 2nd sig..

I have used at least 100 staples dvds with no failed burns. Have had problems with Sony, only a couple though. I do have a friend that uses verbatium because he heard they were the best and has had more problems than me, same computer too. Maybe it depends on the user?

@Mankey, the trouble with stuff like Staples media is you can't guarantee who makes them, one day you might get some made by a decent manufacturer, one day you'll pick up some that are manufactured by a substandard manufacturer.

As to whether it depends on the user, yes, a lot of problems are down to user error. But also a lot of problems are to do with people's setup. You wouldn't believe how many posts i, and others here reply to every night, that are due to setup/config issues. Ask your friend to sign up here and open a thread giving details such as system spec, dvd burner details etc etc. Pls see 2nd link in my signature for reasons why media such as staples should be avoided
