"laws of good remakes
1.nothing removed.
2.rebalaceing can be tricky but can be ok.
3.Voice acting ok if done with effort.
4.New graphics engine a must.
5.New combat system only if the old one is kept."
So let's look at what we WILL have:
1.Something will unavoidably be removed. This happens not only during remakes, but even during translations. What happened when Square released FFVII to the U.S.? They cut out a ton of crap (anyone upset that we can't get Aeris back?), and added "extra" features to try and make up for it... i.e. the Weapons. This will invariably happen again with the new remake, regardless of how much time and/or money they spend on it. Its the way of the video game world.
2.Rebalancing. What does that even mean? Do you mean adding in a difficulty system, something that makes bosses harder as your characters become higher levels? This would be necessary in the remake (I'd say a good 75% of all the people who by FFVII would have already played it and therefore find the game retardedly simple), but we would run into te problem once again of having "die-hard" FFVII fans complaining about tampering with the original goodness.
3.Voice acting. This is also now necessary in any RPG to make it to a broad crowd. I'm sure you could all come up with some examples of recent games that haven't had voices to me, but thats just it; I haven't heard of them. Therefore, most of the worlds population won't have heard of it either. FFVII could get away with not having voices because of its already enormous fan base, but Square, being smart business men, would probably be looking to satisfy the greater consumer pool.
4. New graphics engine: this is why we all want the game to be remade. Every one of us wants to see Cloud chopping shit up and Tifa bouncing around in high-def; don't lie to yourselves, its true. But the original game being what it was, this would be extremely difficult to do without starting from scratch. The screen positions and shots chosen for the game originally were created with and for the available graphics of the time. Each shot was strategically used to best show the game with the limited capabilities of the time. Using these shots again today would be pointless because of the staggering increase in graphic technology. So why not just make new shots? Because that would be changing the entire game from an artistic stand point. Think of the creators of the game... they came up with all of those shots and all of those scenarios for the game. This makes the game their work of art, and to remake that (and therefore change it) would be like taking Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and sending it through Photoshop. And then putting it onto an HD disc and distributing it to millions of people. But I'm getting side-tracked.
5.New combat system only if the old one is kept. This sentence doesn't make any sense. But if they did change anything about the combat system, I for one would be one of the kabillion zombies pounding on Square's door in search of blood (and brains). The battle system was part of what made FFVII such a cool game to play, and is also something that would invariably be tweeked if they were to remake the game.
Well, to recap, I'll offer this thought. Has any company ever remade one of its games? Has this ever been done before? Other than Madden games and sports games, etc. If any of you think up of an instance when its been done I'd love to hear about it. So not only would it be extremely challenging and extremely risky, but it would be the first time (if I'm right) that anyone had ever attempted anything like that. And that's a pretty intimidating feat by itself.
P.S. Sorry about the lengthy reply, but I only post once a week or something so I hope its not too spammy. Not like the mystery meat though >.<

translation and script will change I forgot to add that but removing equipment items character and summons is a NO NO....they removed some of these from the WA1 remake...
re balancing means they tweak the weapons to make them more "fair" look at Shining Force GBA remake they re tweaked things to make thing weaker and sometimes stronger than the game the remake is from, tweaking stats and weapons and such is ok just don't go over board and if you want the game to be easier make a easy mode don't ruin the remake by making it easy....
Voice acting is not necessary and is necessary is leavening the japaanse voice track in since their actors are 10 to 1 ahell of alot better than ours.
New graphics is the 2nd reason for the remake is 1frist reason is always sellabilty
New combat system is the old is kept, rather simple if they go overboard to remake the battle system at least leave the old system in so you can have a option to play it,do you really want to play FF7 with FF12s poorly thought out combat system?
Bascily give gamers options and just maybe it will enhance replay thus making the game sell better.
Remakes
Shining Force GBA,Wild Arms 1,Phansty Star 1,2,4(whenever they decide and release them in the states...)
Final Fantasy 3 is getting a remake for the DS,FF1 and 2 got remakes (FF1 lost a few secrets it had).
I just hate it when they go out of their way to change things and leave you with no options to change it more like the first one.
*L* I like spam :P

I don't know, ill take the remake anyway. Because i wont be comparing it to the old game piece by piece meticulously, thats a little exaggerated all it's own. But i will love the fact that we got it updated nonetheless. Plus you gotta admit that somethings were completely un necessary.
I just hope they keep the televised Shin-Ra tv march, i loved that.

So you are sayign if they remove summons and spells water down the gameplay enhance the story some you wont be pissed?
they did that to the Lunar remakes on the PSX.....I was quite pised and infuriated that they took a great game and pissed on its great gameplay elements the story is about the only thing that was done good the rest of it left a very bitter taste in my mouth there is no need to change it to the point that it becomes a wanna be version of itself.
Lunar 1 and 2 on the Sega CD had a almost RTS like battle field but battles went quickly so it begin RTS like was not a issue plus is had simi smart AI that could do battles for you if you were no good add to it killer weapons and a few neat and madly powerful spells and they just riped them out tossed a new coat of paint and tweaked the story the new story in Lunar 1 is not great enough to fix all the issues it has and frankly the story and settings on the sega CD game felt more intact...what I am trying to say is if you don't hold them to make a descent game they skip putting effort into it and make it crappy.
If you have not noticed I am a game fanboy not a Square/Game arts/corporate dev/dev fanboy I am rather tired of seeing good and ok devs becoming fat lazy and fcking pompous and stop puting effort into the games they make....
Square has gotten very fat very lazy and very fcking pompous they have started to "brand wagon" their games making a ton of crappy knock offs most of the top titles have been iffy KH 1 and DQ8 being good but missing something (and yes DQ8 is not perfect but its as close as I have seen to a true old school RPG in almost 6 years).
Unlike most people and some review sites I ahve not lowered my expectations of quality in games, all games want to be a 10 but reality bring im down a level
DQ8
Paceing is all off its to quick -0.5
Stat changing stuff in battles dosent work right-0.5
Towns have a bad house/room to person ratio 1.0
Alchemy pot could have more depth
Map could be easier to to use and see where you are
I could go on but in the end the game is a 7-8.5 very above average but still not quite the 9-11 like in the 90's
I might be to ahrd on FPS's and RPGs I give metroid prime 1 and 2 a 7 ,1 annoys me with the weapon changes from the 2D and lack of full button mapping 2 has overly small rooms/areas that can be overly complex and lacks full button mapping *L* sorry any fps not to haev the mandatory button config gets a 1-2 point strike :P
ggaaa I am long winded ><

rpg nowadays lack that connection between the gamer and the game it self. Good rpgs will have ppl replaying it over and over even tho they have fully complete it 100%. Im still playing Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3 lol...
I dont know what it is about those rpgs, sure isnt the graphics. So i kinda see why ppl would say that the original is better than the remake. If ff7 was remade im sure i would of liked the original better still. Depends i guess. But if the original was included like SupXL says then i guess im satisfied.

i didnt think of the fact that developers would change things here and there, and li'l things like that would make you just hate the remake. but there were 1000s of things in FF7 that drew you in, and some of that stuff you wont notice. at some point i read some person's theories, and now i must play it again and look for a couple of new things that i didnt notice before. there was waaaaayyyyy too much thought and planning put into 7. prob'ly more than any FF game in my opinion. it'd be hard to recapture EVERYTHING that made you love the game so much that it hurt to think of anything else. but MY main reason for wanting the remake, is an excuse to buy a PS3. there hasnt been anything announced that just blows me away to the point i must give away the money for the console. BUT if FF7 was remade, you better believe that i would do it.
in all honesty, i think that SE can pull it off. they pulled off the game with 100 (or 300) programmers in the course of 3 years they made a stellar RPG game that took the world by storm and created an even larger fanbase. and now that is the game that has brought them (prob'ly) the most money in the history of Square(enix). i had heard of Final Fantasy back in the NES days, but never played any of them. i just had no clue of how good they could be. i wanted to try FF3 for SNES (FF6 in japan), but could never find it, or didnt realize what i needed to do early on in the game. so i never really got to enjoy it from days long ago. the first FF i played was what?? FF7 of course. a friend of mine just happened to have it, and showed me what could be done in the game with the summons. then i was immediately hooked. after he let me borrow it, i got into the story of it and that was the s~~t to make me love the game. there was so much to love about the game that i became an instant fan of the series. i have tried to play the entire series, but 1-6 just dont keep my attention. i dont doubt that there are good or great stories behind the games, but if you look at the numbers of sales for the series, 7 will probably more than double anything... but that's my assumption with no facts behind it.
i say that square better hurry. the PSP is supposedly getting a PS1 emulator, and you can save games to your magic gate, or the hdd attachment thing for it. if that's the case, then i'll buy a psp and emulate my game from there. OR if the hacking/modding scene discover a way to emulate/run PS1 games from a console hdd, then my only reason for wanting the remake will be the graphics.... unfortunately.

The thing that hooks most newer RPG players (I'll include myself; FFVII was my first) is the character interaction. Any game with really believable character personalities and scenarios will (probably) be worth playing through at least once. This is why the modern RPG has a much broader fan base than older ones (FFVI <---). So say they do remake FFVII... of course its going to get a HUGE following and going catch A LOT of attention from everyone. And everyone will play it... because RPGs now are very addicting to a very large amount of people. But at this point I'm sure Square is more concerned about both their repuation and their future fan base than just making profit on one game. Sure, they could make a killing on FFVII if they remade it, but if it got their entire fanbase pissed off? That would take away from EACH new game they sold, which would lose them far more money than any one release could get them. So its not all about the economics here.

I don't mind slight changes its just remaking it for the sake of recreating it that gets on my nerves in the end no matter what they do they will make money of it............
blacGoku
A few games have used monsters roaming around on screen to start a random battle and it works but sadly they don't use it enough
SuperXL
Sadly before FF7 Square had to work hard on most of its games FF7 is the start of the downhill run for FF games at least when it comes to characters and gameplay............
FF8 was pompous and poorly explained gameplay wise the story and characters were ok ,FF9 was great a true classic FF,FFX to many things removed from what makes a FF game then they watered down battles blah the story is top notch but if a game is not fun to paly whats the point,FFX2 is a knock off game like Vincents game DOC,FF11 is horrid FF12 yet again rapes the carcase that is FF the new live action battle system is painful however there is some hope for it since you can turn it off and go full turn based and FF13 uses a action point system akin to fallout and other turn based streatgy type games some liek teh way FF changes I do not slight evolutions in gameplay is ok but to overhaul it ever 2 games with unknown gameplay is a bit much
Anyone recall that pice of equipment that Tifa had that gave her more attack power when she had a status aliment or soemthign and since status almigets lasted out of battle you could milk the power boost for awhile? it was a cursed item or soemthign I can rember it but I will enver forget it its not quite a glitch but still fun fun fun :3

you say FF7 was the start of down hill?? you're prob'ly right.
i heard it took them forever (3+ years) and lots of manpower to get it done the way they wanted. and i think that may have tapped a lot of the creative juices. but if you think about how much was put into that game that you never noticed until you played it over and over, you start to love it more and more.
8 kicked me in the neck with the unexpected shift in gameplay, but that is what you have to understand, sometimes change is necessary. some people claim that they absolutely hate turnbased RPGgames and it is the scourge that kills the brain. but i dont care, as long as the story is compelling. which is why i liked 8. 9 is definitely a classic with it's story and gameplay. definite keeper.
for 10, i hated the lead character. actually just his voice and attitude, and manerisms, and basically i just hated the guy. but i got over that by using the MUTE BUTTON HAHAHAHAHA!!! and that sphere system was scary as hell at first, but i managed to figure it out and kind of liked it. but not that lead character. he just pissed me off at just about every turn.
10-2 was something done for the fanboys who liked whatever. it was all about the scantily clad women in their quest to.... who cares. i played and beat that, but i do not own it. yay for me... i think.
11 i wont play, dont care to pay a monthly fee just to play online. (plus i have no internet at home) i just hope that the rest of the Final Fantasy games live up to the amazing ass hype that FF7 created. that is one feat, that squarEnix will have a hard time topping.

I have issues with FF8 at best its ok but to annoying
FFX this is why US voice acting should ALWAY be accompanied with the japanase voice track....
but besides that what really annoyed me was the battle system is not as precise as the 2d games plus the lack of a proper over world blah just blah
I played FF11 for a few months, hot damn the MMO rules they use are old the setup is so restrictive and unfun its just......painfull.

I think FF8 followed FF7 really well....i didnt think it was downhill at all. YOu might not remember but when it came out in japan for the first time ppl were goin crazy over it. The 3d cut scence were amazingly realistic for its time. The main character was bad ass just like Cloud and the gunblade is sav no explaination needed....
FF9 is probably where it went downhill imo...the only reason i liked that game is because i wanted to know what heppens to vivi and how it would end. Besides that i didnt really care much about the main character at all. Ever since FF9 the main character has been lil wussies with girl hair.

Yes and no FF story and character wise has been more or less solid its the rest of the game that has been fcked over.
FF8
Screwing with gameplay and equipment enough to halve FF fans yes the game did well however it created a divide in FF fandome
FF9
A ture classic FF compelte with chibi/mini characters a full world to explore a great equipment and skill system only the anti cute gamers bitched about it
(the ending told me this its been a few months to a year sicne the final battle, the black ages ether can reproduce normally are they were ALOT of them made and after thos who were controlling them got defeated they made more black mage villages to live in peace or whatever *L* ,FF4,FF6,FF7,FF8 left me with a few Questions to but meh)
FFX where quality and visuals did not meet...
the game dose look great but it dose not make up for a fckd up equipment system watered down battle system, the sphere system works but I wish it had more unique character skills and stuff that a mish mash of stuff, the lac of the "World" is annoying the VAing is not great bearable but not great the story is solid the characters are ok but theres a gaping hole in the gameplay/equipment side of things.
FFX2 I hate because they don't have a equipment system if you got amour and weapons and the dress spheres OMFG the evil tweaking you do but not tis a spin off game and feels every bit like one.
(Preview)
FF12 is another one where visuals trump logic...
Without the ability to pause and slow down the action when YOU want to you can not control all your characters thus taking away a important aspect of the game this is not a movie ,keep your live action out of my RPG damnit! *L*
At least they left turn based in as a option and for that I will give FF12 a chance the Wolrd setup is a cross between FF11 and FFX so you will have large in between areas to explore what I dislike is the random chest system for rare and unique stuff chests should not regen but I hate radndom chests in RPGs....

Turn based combat is NOT an option is XII, i know, ive played it! XII is a decent game, and I feel i can say this since i own and have beaten every other final fantasy, multiple times. Yes, people want someting new, and XII gives them this for sure, but the battle system, accompanied by the anti climtatic summons leave a lot to be wished for. The skills system is much like that of X, so you either love it or hate it, i loved it. Hopefully square gets it right with the psp final fantasy and XIII. XII is a good game, but will alienate many people, basically a XI without the online feature.
Final Fantasy 3 WILL ALWAYS OWN!

Oh? I bet you hate bishis(spetherioth) to :P
Tiduos and the Vahn are "cute" teen males, they have overly child like appearances this is drool worth on females but annoying on guys but then you have to have issues to dislike good looking guys.
Look at the FF4 and FF6 character icons bishies and cute males are not new, look at the FMV in the PSX FF5 remake unrealistic beautiful people are everywhere sadly...
I am not a fan of bishis (femining looking males) or extra cute looking guys but its near dead last on my list of thigns to complain about
1.function/skill
2.Usefulness
3.Personality
4.VAing
5.Weapon of chice

Phew I dunno guys... I'm playing through FFVIII again (its been YEARS since I last tried it...) and its painful. Like, it hurts me to sit here and push myself through this awful game when I could be playing so many others. I don't understand what people see in it. The main character is SO FRUSTERATING to hear talking and his support isn't all that supportive... they're not very interesting either. The plot is so losely held together, it seems like they designed the battle system, put all the bosses in, and wrote a story AROUND it. I don't know if I'll be able to finish haha...

First off the story is sent around love romance that nuance is lost on 50% of the male populace I get it but even I have seen better done characters and story thus I don't get it.....got it?
2ndly some people love the gather aspect of the magic system...I don't...it frustrates me to no end add the lack of proper weapons and armor and I dislike it more
3rdly the main reason why some love is is you have alot of control over how your characters stats develop I get that...but...again I have seen better add the frustration of the gameplay and thus I don't get it....... got it?
I broke down and and used a game shark for FF8 I but in infinite items for the hidden summons, gave all magic inf castings meaning all you had to do was find it the first time(I think), After doing these 2 thigns the game actually became fun all you had to do then was raise the characters manage the inventory find items and stuff tog et new weapons follow the story and well...just setback and enjoy the game..not have to be bogged down with over the top frustrating crap.

the shpere grid system is ok just annoying to use when you use a inf item code,FFXs characters didn't have enough unique skills to make them stand out, they were kinda generic.
FF12 will be using a SHP grind variant.
