A number (not all) of DVD's recorded using DVD shrink will only play back upto about 60% of the movie, the playback recording then freezes, (using various DVD players) has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so any help to solve it would be much appreciated.

Ok, couple of quick questions.....
What brand of discs were you using?
and
Do you know at what speed you were burning at?

I'm thinking quite possibly it's an issue with junk media. High quality blank media can save you lots of money and headaches......

Hi, thanks for replying, mainly I use Tuffdisc DVD's (8x copy speed rating), but copy at 4x speed, Ive also tried datawrite classic 8x and another similar brand all with the same result, wondered if higher capacity blank DVD's were available and if that might help

Appears you are using inferior media brands - have not heard of either.

Try quality media - Verbatim, Ritek, TY etc.

Do not use labels on your burnt DVDs

Hi again, I will try changing brands then, I have been sticking custom labels (designed for DVD's) on to the DVDs, does thias actually affect them playing back?

yes, the labels DO affect the playback...custom or not~ :)

also, the 2 brands stated above are NOT good quality discs...you MIGHT get lucky with the 8x DVD+R yellow/goldtops datawrites IF they code out as MCC003 (which is a GREAT media ID coding by the way)...

but, i would suggest trying Taiyo Yuden media (genuine, not fakes) and Verbatim media (8x DVD+R Verbs ALSO code out as MCC003s) very good stuff...

good luck

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Believe these guys about the media. Try a spindle of Ty's and you'll never look back.

I too have had problems of late with Dvds backed up with DVD Shrink but not sure if this is a software issue.I have a Compaq nx9110 laptop with a Teac Dw-224e Cd Rw-Dvd rom.Up to a few months ago all of my backed up Dvds worked fine on all Dvd playing software (Power Dvd,Win Dvd).I now have a problem whereby some of these back ups will not load (Dvd drive zips back and forward) and will not start at all.I have used the same media for all Dvds (Princo 1-8x) and burned using a 2x Dvd burner.
I have tried looking for a firmware update to no success...any suggestions?
Cheers

Princo aren't exactly high quality discs. From some reading, it seems that they may have faked a TDK ID for their disc in the past.

Appricate the helpful advise given on this site, at present I now have a pack of Verbatim AZO 8x DVD's with genuine TY coating, and I will NOT be sticking labels on them, will keep you posted as to whether this solves the problem, cheers

Look Guys I'll make this simple. The problem is not the programs, it's how compatable the dye on the media used is with various dvd players. I have tried many brands over two years and the best and most consistant hands down is Datawrite TITANIUM 8x or 16x discs.
I don't burn faster than 8x because I feel any faster could cause problems. I also use labels on my Datawrite TITANIUM discs and have nerver had problems with them and I can not see how labels can cause problems as the laser on a dvd player reads the underside of the disc Not the top. The top side of the disc is just for protecting the underneath side and writing or putting LABELS on. I was using Ritec Ridiscs with a G05 dye and had great results but then they changed them to Ritec Extreme and the dye became very inconsistant so I changed to Datawrite TITANIUM discs which use a CMC organic dye and this dye is the best for compatibility with dvd players. Well I think iv'e made my point so I look forward to reading what other people think.

I have a simular problem. Movies that I have backed up in the past the use to work fine now freeze after playing for about an hour. It is very strange because I can change dvd players, skip to the section where is was freezing on and the movie works again.

My wife thinks I'm crazy because I start watching a flick and when it freezes I have to take the disk out and put it in a second DVD player to finish it.

Any idea what is happening here? I use all different types of media so that is not the problem. I am using stopmer labels and I was thinking the disk may heat up causing the problem but I am really at a loss.

The weird thing is the all of my movies, even the ones I did not have a problem with in the past, now do this. The orginal disk work fine so the issues is with the burnt media.

@garyt, the most common cause(s) of that is too high a burn speed and/or crappy quality media...

So...I`ll biff the Princo discs and get something more reliable then.Unfortunately alot of the media mentioned in the posts here are not available in Japan, how about Imation or any of the other Japanese brands eg. TDK,Mitsubishi,Ricoh etc.
Taiyo Yuden is a Japanese brand but have not seen it in the shops here.

To garyt, this is simply a media compatability problem as I explained previously. It works when you put it into another dvd player because it is more compatable with that one than the other one. To solve the problem you need a better quality disc that uses a more compatable dye so it will work on most players. The best I found is Datawrite TITANIUM DVD-R. I burn these using DVD Shrink 3.2 at 8x and I do not have any problems playing them on many dvd players. The best way to see if its a compatability problem with your dvd player is test it on your PC dvd rom, if it works on this but stops or freezes on your dvd player then it is a problem with the disc you are using. E-mail Datawrite and ask them where you can purchase thier Titanium discs from. I live in the UK and this is what I did and they e-mailed me the site to order them from. Life is now good!

@Codeman01 -

glad you're having good success with Datawrite. i found them to be awful (ie subpar) regardless of dye used, and have tried various different types of them. They're the same price as top notch Verbatim / TY discs

svp sells them - http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvd-rnoprint.html and i think ebuyer does too though i won't buy media from ebuyer again as they were selling FAKE TY discs (Bulkpaq Orange)

@creaky. I also buy them from svp. You failed to tell me you used Titanium. I say this because the other datawrite discs are crap but the titanium ones are the only ones that work well. Did you try the titanium ones?

sorry, wasn't clear enough. no, haven't used Titanium, i vowed to not trust any Darawrite again. I only use Verbatim and a few TY, and just bought 500 of the newfangled 'Verbatim TY' discs which are cheaper than most other discs. Am dipping my toe into trying some Ritek G05's, as a few of the other regulars have had great success with them. Other than those types, i don't buy anything else anymore. i wasted far too much money on cheaper media before so am paranoid about trying names that have let me down before
