@creaky. You have let yourself down. Did you not read my previous message dated 10 september @ 11:07. You said you tried datawrite and they were not good but I clearly specified to use TITANIUM discs. Also in my previous message read what i said about Ritec G05 discs.

@garyt - let us know what burning program you use as there are setting that probably just need tweaking. changing media (or a new burner even) is only one part of the puzzle and it's always necessary to check/correct setting for continued success

Hi Codeman

It does not matter which dvd player I put it in the disk will freeze.

However, if I take the disk out and wait a few minutes I can put it back in the same player, forward it to the spot where it started skipping and it will work fine for about 30 minutes.

CODEMAN01:
I know you seem confident, but how long have you used those discs. I did massive research that led me to Ritek disks, no labels, and slow record speeds. I used dvdshrink, recorded with dvd copy. All disks worked when recorded, for nearly 6 months. Now I would say 90% of those disks now freeze using the same player. Disks that would work fine in the dvd-rom but not on the dvd player, now, through time, also freeze on my dvd-rom. Now I know you'll tell me the obvious bad media scenario, but have your Datawrite TITANIUM been time tested?

More importantly. Does anyone have a solution to the half-way-through-a-movie freeze?

@garyt - still waiting for the name of the burning program you use. we can get to the bottom of this with more info

@Codeman01 - am still puzzled to your statement "@creaky. You have let yourself down" - a strange comment from someone's first post on this site.. plus good to see someone who's having good luck with CMC, it's the most foul stuff there is but great if you like it.

@booondox - as i mentioned to garyt, "the most common cause(s) of that is too high a burn speed and/or crappy quality media...". give us more to go on and we can get you sorted

@creaky I said that because I specifically said Datawrite TITANIUM are very good and only the TITANIUM range. You then replied "i found them to be awful (ie subpar) regardless of dye used, and have tried various different types of them", but you have not tried TITANIUM. So I feel you are letting yourself down because you have thrown in the towel before trying the best ones. The Titanium range utilizes superb premium organic dye that ensures stable writing with excellent quality such as TTH02. It Guarantees the data life on the disc to last for 10 years.
I have discs I burned a year ago using titanium discs and they still work great. You must make sure you have the latest Firmware for your burner and you use a good name burner. I use a Pioneer dvr109 burner, also if you get dirt, dust, scratches or fingerprints on the underside of your discs this will cause read problems. But I will now ask the most important question of them all - When was the last time anybody on this forum with these problems used a laser lens cleaner. They are recomended to be used after every 10 hours of play. Ps: Sorry, but when I start writting I just can't stop!!

@Codeman01 - apart from my own dealings with bad media when i first got into dvd burning, i have no problems with ripping/burning/most computer things so help out here all the more, mainly dealing with other people's bad media woes. I have dealt with literally 1000s of people here afflicted with bad media/lesser quality media and you would not believe how wound up i get with bad/lesser quality media!. Thus i am all the more wary of lesser media as time goes on. I now religiously stick to Verbatim Datalifeplus, TY, and now the latest Verbatim TY (and 50 Ritek G05's as a few buddies round here go on about them so much). But that's all i'll use, as per my siggy, no other media comes near my PC :)

(However i read up more than most on media so that i at least get to try and keep up with what's hot and what's not - i won't waste my own money when there's 1000s of guinea pigs buying other media lol). Anyway, only last night i was recopying from some discs someone sent me that are Princo. and lo and behold i got some CRC errors. Argh i hate bad media (he knows how i hate bad media so deliberately put them on Princo and he knew i'd recopy them anyway).

when i first got into dvd burning, the discs were literally 500 Bulkpaq Orange disks which burnt 100% and were watched 100% without problem. However i then started having problems with newer batches of the same exact discs, and found they were crap quality, and fakes of TY media code to boot. So i am incredibly paranoid about discs which is very odd as i burnt untold 1000s of cd's over the years on untold different media, most of which i still have. The Bulkpaq's have the honour of being shamed in both links in my signature.
So there's some reasons why i won't go near Datawrite again, or other 'lesser' quality media. when i get talking about media i can't stop lol :)

@booondox - i don't think i've used dvdcopy before. don't suppose it generates logfiles does it, ie similar to Nero where we can go thru your settings. One thing you could do is download Nero's info-tool (free) and provide the huge logfile that it generates...

Does anybody know of a list of WHOS´s WHO in the DVD & CD manufacturing business?

Who manufactures MEMOREX, or all the other DVDs & CDs.
Who manufactures the DVDs for COMPUSA, etc.
I know that 90% of them are manufactured over ``there´´., but who´s the manufacturer.
Most DVDs I use are MEMOREX and I don´t really know if they are good or bad...they work.

@n0v0n -

i'll have a stab at answering this one..the trouble with people like Memorex is they use widely varying quality in disc manufacturers, the most appalling being CMC Magnetics (hence the media code 'CMC Mag'). Memorex aren't the only ones who do this, others are HP, TDK, Imation etc.

snippet from a good list here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 (media codes in brackets) -

Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (MBIPG101-R03-000)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x Printable (MCC-003-000)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (CMC MAG.W02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (MKM-A02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.....)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Memorex DVD-R 8X (CMC MAG AE1)
Memorex DVD-RW 1x (ProdiscDVDRW)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01) MINI DVD-RW 1.36GB
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01....)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)
MemorexDVD-RAM 2x (Optodisc)

So....for instance, in that list there are 3 varieties of +R 8x (none of which i'd say are any good really)

Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)

and here...all i'd say where any good are the MCC coded ones -

Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)

The trouble is, you wouldn't know which ones you're gonna get, just buy picking up a pack of Memorex. And that's part of the reason why so many people have problems with them, they see the name Memorex, associate it with quality cassettes (for instance) in the dim distant past etc etc, and it's the luck of the draw as to what disc manufacturer actually made them. Hence why i won't buy Memorex, HP, TDK, Imation etc etc etc. There are ways with some companies discs, to work out which ones you're gonna get, ie what sort of tubs they're in, are they -R, what speed are particular discs etc etc but most people on the street just haven't got that knowledge and just don't care about all that. I have feet in both camps, i need to have knowledge of media, but i just want media to work, and work consistently and for good :)

...so i am very particular about what i spend my money on, and what i recommend to others.. see my sig for more bad media woes if you like..

Hope that helps a bit...

Have added Imation as we use them at work and some of them are atrocious -

Imation DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPNR00)
Imation DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Imation DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Imation DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Imation DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Imation DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Imation DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Imation DVD-RW 1x (OPTODISCK001)

(in fact Imation feature in the 2nd link im my sig)..

I wholeheartedly recommend verbatim datalifeplus myself. Lately I've been using the latest 'verbatim ty' disks. I can't say they're better than verbatim OR TY as verb and ty are both fantastic anyway. I'm in the uk and I never have to pay more than 24p or 26p a disc. And I like verb so much I'm walking to maplin as I type to buy some verbatim dvd pens as my current pens won't write on the Ritek printable disks I bought the other day..

Maybe this question does not belong here, but here it goes.
Which is the best way to clean smudge, dirt, jelly and/oe peanut butter from your DVDs & CDs.
some say soap detergent, or alcohol, even gasoline.
Any suggestions?

It is very possible that the DVD player itself is over heating, hence the reason why you can take it out of that DVD player and put it a different one, and it plays fine.

Using labels will make your DVD player, retain heat.

@creaky. I also started burnung with bulkpaq orange discs and they worked great until all of a sudden I started getting bad batches also so that is when my journey began. I was recently using Riteks Ridisc which as you know us a G05 dye. I used these discs for months and they were brilliant until they changed to Ridisc Extreme, then the discs started freezing often. You keep saying you will not go near Datawrite again, Unfortunately you gave up on them before you tried the best ones. I see you deserve some respect when talking about media so I will put a challenge to you now! Try A pack of Datawrite Titanium (I get them from SVP) and tell me what you think of them. They use a dye called TTH02 and it is very good, I don't waste any discs now. The best ones to try are Datawrite Titanium (16x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 25, they are only 6.19 for the pack. I will only burn thes at 8x as I worry that any faster may cause problems. So, will you take the challenge?

- OMG surely you must be joking!, i won't even let dust or fingerprints on my discs (which is especially tricky since our kitten often goes for the PC each time a disc has burnt and ejects)

@Codeman01 -

that challenge is a little much for my pallet (and my wallet) :)

i don't recall TTH02 being as good as your own results have shown, but i myself haven't used any so have to trust yours and other people's judgement on those. It took me a lot of faith to try some G05's as i'm happy to use other peoples experiences (with media i haven't used) as guinea pigs. You see i know it's boring and predictable to stick to Verbs and TY for instance, but for me to be real happy to trust other discs i'd have to use shedloads of them as i'm the kind of person who distrusts something for ever more if it lets me down once (or worse still if it's something that happens intermittently, for instance if my car was to not start one day and be ok for a week afterwards).

Now if you'd said Sony, certain Fuji or Maxell i'd go for the challenge :)

(more predictable choices i know, but when there's no cost difference between the proverbial choices and other discs, i'm more than happy to let others be the guinea pigs in my stead)

which reminds me, i saw over on cdfreaks yesterday that dvp are gonna get some Fuji in soon, so i'm checking their site most days..

The best i can promise is i'll see if i can re-find more info re TTH02 that i've read before...

Sorry, I was joking.
I take good care of all my DVDs & CDs alike.
It pisses me of when I let some body handle my media.
Nobody cares.
I always keep the originals locked up and only loan the copy(s) out.
Many times I get them back, dirty, scratched, etc.
