Creaky what I am saying is that the media works fine with me or my equipment everything I have archived works fine on my dvd players computer or table top. When a friend uses the same media it works (plays) in computer or laptop dvd drives but not on the table top unit, this media I have used from his lot and no problem. He had no problem up to a month or so using the same lot of media, again just recent problem with playing on table top dvd players.

@ buckscrap. The problem with cheap media is that its not very compatible with other dvd players. They do often play on your pc though. By the way, a dvd player is the one connected to your tv and a dvd rom or dvd burner are the ones for your PC. Come on guys, somebody had to say it!!

@ gurnard. I stated in earlier posts that I have great results with Datawrite Titanium DVD-R. You tried DVD+R this is not the same!
I will now spell it out so there is no confusion. I have great long lasting results with Datawrite Titanium DVD-R 16x and also 8x discs, non printable gun metal grey top discs. I also use labels on them and have never had problems doing this because I use NEATO labels and a NEATO label kit.

I have been making DVDs with DVDShrink 3.2 and writing them with DVDDecrypter on Phillips 4x DVD+R for a few months with few problems.
They play fine on a cheap COBY player.

I have run into a strange problem. The last two DVDs I made had no compression. At the end of each chapter, the video freezes, the clock stops, and the audio runs on for about a second. Then the audio stops, the player thinks silently for about two seconds, and then everything proceeds.

Once or twice there has been an immediate skip of a few seconds of audio and video.

Is DVDShrink confusing the player when there is no compression?

@twidlar

Skip, freezes and pixelation are usually due to bad media, your firmware need updating or you are burning too fast.

I burnt about 300 DVDs with this setup so far. Again, it has only happened with uncompressed DVDs, about 3 or 4. No pixelation.

I've done more experimentation with the skip and freezes. It doesn't look like bad media or your firmware and probably not burn speed.

Using the DVD player and WinDVD, I traced the skip back to the original DVD, or more precisely, the files on the HD DVDDecrypter made.

Again, the freezes occur at a very specific and predictable point, when the DVD goes from one chapter to another, right when the chapter number changes.

- On the DVD player a Phillip DVD+R 4X, the video freezes and the audio runs on for a second, then all freezes for a second, then everything proceeds.
- On the DVD player a DVD+RW 2.4X, all freezes for a second, then everything proceeds.
- With WinDVD, on both disks, both audio and video freeze for a seconds
- With WinDVD, the DVD Decrypted files freeze for a very short time, perhaps 5 or 6 frames.

Evidently, whatever chapter seperation there is confuses WinDVD, DVDShrink and the DVD player in varying degrees.

The DVD is Tschaikovsky's Nutcracker with the Kirov Ballet.

Basically there are two completely different problems discussed in this thread:
1) Discs not playing due to incompatibility between media and players
2) Discs no longer playing after a certain amount of time, that played fine in the beginning.

I want to stick to the last one, as that was the initial problem in this thread. Let me start by saying that I have recorded 1000's of DVDR over the last two years all on Pioneer drives (104 to 110). I purchase a new drive every time I order discs (+/ every 400 discs).

Compatibility is definately an issue, but I have received excellent results with Ritek G4 and G5 media. Not that my recordings are being playing in home DVDR of tens of persons, all using different brand players. I would say only the older players and brand such as Sony tend to give problems.

Last month I back-uped a lot of movies which suddenly did not work anymore, these were all recorded on RITEK G5 media. Incredible...this media was supposed to be one of the best. Indeed with regard to compatibility, but apparently not with regard to longetivity (lifetime).

This is really nasty and makes you wonder seriously how long your media will keep working. To my greatest anger a lot of other DVDR recorded on other media such as Samsung and Be-All also did not work anymore.

Since this disaster I am using Taiyo Yuden. But I think there is no guarantee that these recording will work 6 months from now. I can only wonder:
1) Does the industry know about this problem???
2) Are Billions of DVDR begin sold knowing they won't work after a short period of time?
3) Are we all being ripped of?
4) Is there somebody from the Ritek production line who can confirm my fears?
5) What can we do??

This may sound crazy, but it's true. Labels will make DVDr's not work over time.

Don't ask why, just peel the labels off (slowly) of the ones you are having probs with, wash the disks with soap and water, and play. 85% of my DVDr's froze, and 85% of my DVDr's had labels. Since I've found out the label trick, out of those 85%, 15 out of 15 have worked perfectly once the labels were removed.

Who needs to explain it if it works.

@floware

Imagine if all CD/DVD would not cause problems.

The entire industry would go bust!

They would not be making money like they are.

We are paying the price for it.

I keep my original media in the dark, always rip backups.

Sometimes I make a copy to a Mini DV and save it that way.

I can only imagine the near future when they will be selling us

15GB, 30GB, and more GB DVDs & CDs for an arm and a leg.

This new media should be out shortly.

Problems, problems, problems.

If everybody would complain to the manufacturer or reseller (about the bad crap) they sell us, we could get the message across.

Earlier on in this thread I posted a question regarding why my ripped Dvds stopped working after burning with DVD Shrink.After burning and reburning some movies with quality media,I found the problem as you already know,lies with shite discs.The old adage "You pay for what you get" rings very true.Even after backing up some PS2 games to crap media,I found that they would workn`t after just 2 weeks,a lesson learnt.

Personally I consider cheap media to have a silent expiration date, like milk... except you don't know when its going to go bad. Verbatim have always worked the best for me. Some people ask me why I get the 4x instead of the 8x ones even though my drive supports the higher burn speeds. I just tell them to think of it like this: You burn slower, the drive can take its time and get things done right. You burn to fast and you rush everything, causing it to maybe skip "less important" parts of the information in lue of better stuff.

Seems to click for alot of folks :)

I guess I'll toss in my 2 cents,

Optodisc (Made by Princo I believe): Absolute crap! Gave me a headack for a few weeks! Made me mader then a three leg dog trying to cover a turd up on a frozen lake!

Sony-R: Have never had one coaster out of 300+ burnt discs. Zero compatibility issues either. In my opinon excellent media!

@Cookieboy: Thanks for the cookie!

I've found that over the years things seem to have been degrading in quality quite rapidly. Disc media is a perfect example. When I bought my first CD burner, it couldn't even re-write... but media? Yeah it was 40 bucks for 5 650mb CD's but day-um they were good. Didn't matter the brand either. It was all good.

Now on the other hand the phrase "they dont build em like they used to" comes to mind. You honestly have to be careful what you buy. If the price is to good to be true, unfortunately, oft-times it is. Stick with the advice from the Afterdawn folks... you can't go wrong.
